PB hotel design editorial

Shenzhen's Futian district skyline is punctuated by the Kingkey 100 tower — a 441-metre glass monolith whose faceted crown, visible in the images as a geometric cluster of angled curtain-wall planes, makes it among the tallest buildings in the city. Park Hyatt Shenzhen is set within the tower's upper floors, beginning above the 90th level, where the Pearl River Delta spreads out on one side and the dense residential grid of Futian on the other. The building was designed by TFP Farrells, the Hong Kong and London practice whose Kowloon MTR station and the Beijing South Railway Station established their credentials in large-scale Chinese infrastructure — applied here to a tower whose stepped massing and faceted corners give it an identity distinct from the smoother supertalls surrounding it. The interiors draw on a contemporary Chinese aesthetic that runs through dark-stained timber fretwork, circular headboard panels in brushed copper set against teal lacquer backdrops, and terracotta-toned upholstered seating arranged against floor-to-ceiling glass. Guestrooms are finished with warm honey-toned marble side tables, patterned wool area rugs, and slender pendant lanterns in blackened metal — references to Song dynasty material culture translated through a modern hospitality lens. The dining spaces deploy deep-toned timber screen columns that filter sightlines in the manner of a traditional Chinese courtyard, while the indoor pool level — encased in a steel-and-glass greenhouse structure perched mid-tower — frames the Shenzhen skyline as the dominant architectural gesture of the amenity floor.

"We had 2 rooms including corner suite which was stunning and super comfortable. Cleaning staff were amazing. Breakfast options were vast and delicious. Ordered items arrived quickly. Check in process was cumbersome. A welcome drink and place to sit would have been nice and they need to recognise traveller weariness and that for many foreigners China is quite an alien seeming country so need to provide more of a “welcome to our hotel - this is what we’ve got to offer” type experience. We paid extra for inclusive bar and lounge but were left very unclear about what was actually included - if they could just have a piece of paper with all the information it would have resolved the issue. In the end we only used the bar one evening and felt like second class citizens for trying to use our inclusive package. We didn’t try the lounge at all - who knows what was included! Likewise some printed information about all the hotel restaurants would have been helpful especially as you have to use multiple lifts to access communal areas - the place felt like a maze! We ate out! The hotel pool is a bit functional - more like an exercise pool than somewhere to hang out with the requirement to wear a swimming cap and no bar service. It’s also fully covered and not that warm which felt a bit bizarre in the Shenzhen heat"

"The Park Hyatt in Shenzhen has a WOW factor. The property is fantastic in every way, and I loved my stay. The breakfast was spectacular from the menu selections to the general buffet items. The rooms are clean, have fabulous views, and the automated toilet was pretty awesome as well. I also received a spa service (massage) the last night and it was incredibly relaxing. The fruit and lemon type of jelly at the end of the massage was a great touch! The Attic Bar was great, and the live music was also enjoyable. I loved this stay and hope to be back soon!"
