PB hotel design editorial

Red brick turrets and steeply pitched mansard rooflines rise above Tianjin's Heping District in a composition that owes more to a Flemish civic palace than to anything in the Chinese architectural tradition — a deliberate act of historical theater in a city whose treaty-port past left it with one of Asia's most concentrated inventories of European Revival architecture. The Ritz-Carlton Tianjin, which opened in 2012 across nine floors with 294 rooms and suites, leans into that inheritance without apology, its warm terracotta facade articulated by arched loggias, white stone balustrades, and corner towers capped in gilded copper, the whole mass illuminated at dusk in a way that makes it appear less constructed than conjured. Inside, the interiors navigate the same East-West conversation with varying degrees of conviction. Guest rooms are fitted in a register that sits somewhere between a London townhouse and a Qing-dynasty collector's cabinet — ivory panel molding, elaborate plaster cornices, blue-and-white porcelain lamps standing beside swagged silk drapes — while the Chinese restaurant pivots entirely, deploying a coffered ceiling hung with ranks of teardrop lanterns in lacquer red above cane-backed dining chairs and rough-cut stone columns. The spa pool sits lower still, in a subterranean atmosphere of textured limestone walls, dark timber ceiling slats, and a strip of backlit mosaic tile that turns the water a deep cobalt — a quieter room, and arguably the most considered in the building.

"I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights - 19th and 20th Dec. A few things stood out. 1) Although I am a Titanium member, I do not get access to the Ritz lounge. The room was not ready when I checked in, and I was given access to the lounge while waiting for the room to be ready 2) Due to the fact that all suites were full, me and my family were given free breakfast for the 20th Dec morning which was a very nice gesture 3) The staff were ever so friendly and always in good spirits welcoming and greeting us whenever they saw us. 4) Me and my wife celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary and they gave us a cake and a fruit platter which was much appreciated. 5) The table was also decorated with rose petals with 2 cards written. All in all, one of the best if not the best hotel experience I have encountered in a long time (and I have been staying in good hotels due to the nature of my work). Shout out to Dora who was one of the staff who made the difference! Will definitely recommend anyone who is coming to Tianjin to stay here!"

"Beautiful classic hotel in Tianjin. Exec lounge is great rooms are great and it is quiet. No reason this would not be the best place to stay in Tianjin unless you are working further away and want to stay in the ‘new’ area. I would stay here and deal with a longer commute. Suite upgrade is awesome if you can get it."

"I was lucky enough to spend two nights in this hotel and I won't soon forget my stay. Everything was perfect down to the smallest detail. The building is impressive, and the blend of European and Chinese design is very successful. The historic district is a must-see. You'll never tire of it. Thanks to everyone and special to Jeffi."

"Great hotel in Tianjin, in China, and in the world😀👍 Nice, welcoming, modern in historial landmark building, in exclusive downtown big city of Tianjin. Went for a quick dimsum at the Tian Tai Xuan cantonese restaurant: great staff and sublime services, especially Mia. Thanks a lot for the yum cha experience. Hope to have the same extraordinary experience, this evening, at dinner buffet at the Zest, with our Amex Platinum's FHR program $100 food credit."
