PB hotel design editorial

Few hotel buildings in China announce themselves as boldly as the torii-like frame structure rising above the Haihe River in Tianjin's Heping District — a rectangular void punched through the building's midsection that turns the entire tower into a monumental gateway. The St. Regis Tianjin, which opened in 2015 across 272 rooms and suites spread over roughly 20 floors, was designed with this central aperture as its defining architectural gesture, the lit perimeter of the frame glowing against the blue-hour sky in a way that references both classical Chinese gate architecture and the kind of landmark-scaled formal ambition that has driven Tianjin's riverside development over the past decade. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. Guest rooms in the upper floors carry a contemporary international tone — wide-plank hardwood floors, leather upholstered headboards with sculptural branch-form wall art, floor-to-ceiling glazing framing the Haihe cityscape — while the more ornate rooms lower in the building lean into warmer Chinese residential references, with sunburst-pattern leather headboards, arabesque-patterned carpets, and amber silk curtains pooling against rosewood desks. The signature restaurant takes a more theatrical direction altogether: lacquered macassar ebony banquettes curve around white-clothed tables beneath a hammered bronze ceiling panel that catches the amber lighting with considerable drama. The indoor pool, tiled in deep jade green and framed by Japanese shoji-influenced screens with amber cove lighting above, brings a calmer ceremonial quality to the spa level.

"This is a quality hotel. Excellent location next to the river in walking distance to major attractions and close to central railway station. The design of the building is marvellous and is an architectural icon in its right. The room was very large with wonderful views. The hotel backs onto the river with a large outside patio with stunning views. A couple of points of critique. One the JianBing 煎饼 at the breakfeast wasn’t great. This is one of the Tianjin specialities but it wasn’t very fresh, no spring onion or seasoning, or lettuce. Very disappointing as I was looking forward to a quality traditional breakfast. The other minor critique is the swimming pool which needs renovating. It is getting a bit dirty and tired which lets down the whole hotel which is in excellent condition. Overall I would recommend and stay again. Service was good and the hotel has modern feel with excellent rooms."

"We had A wonderful one night stay. Lovely and polite staff. A good sized, clean and comfortable room. Peking duck from the Chinese restaurant is best we had. A walk along the river after dinner is nice. Definitely a place I would love to be back."

"Stayed at the St regis for 2 nights in Dec 2024. Such a wonderful experience, the st regis has an incredible charm and all the amenities and quality that you would expect from a top-tier hotel. The room, lounges and pool were all well-maintained and elegant in design. The location is excellent and my wife and I were able to take plenty of walks by the river (which I highly recommend as the views are beautiful and Tianjin in general is very walker-friendly). The thing that stood out the most however was the service, from the bag staff to the lobby and concierge everyone was kind, helpful, patient and spoke excellend English which was very helpful as we are not Chinese-language speakers and this was our first stop in China (and our very first visit !). In particular, upon landing we found that our bags did not make the transfer to Tianjin airport, meaning we had no clothes once we reached the hotel. The staff at the St regis called and communicated with the airport baggage staff to ensure it made its way to the airport on the next possible flight and then the hotel sent staff to pick it up for us and delivered it to our room which absolutely saved our trip. Incredible experience overall and I would like to specially thank Nathan, Peter Fu and Karen Fong who helped make our stay very special."

"The A/C didn’t work properly and the room temperature could get over 25. Breakfast was a bad experience the most of the people don’t speak English and they don’t have cards or signs to help you, even using the translator don’t make the experience better. Definitely not a real St. Regis experience."
