PB hotel design editorial

At 3,650 metres above sea level, in the shadow of the Potala Palace, designing a luxury hotel that could hold its own against one of the world's most charged sacred landscapes was never going to be a modest undertaking. The St. Regis Lhasa Resort, which opened in 2010, met that challenge through architectural deference — low-rise pavilions built in whitewashed render with deep-bracketed rooflines drawn from traditional Tibetan monastic architecture, their dark-tiled pitched roofs stepping across a series of still reflecting pools that mirror the Himalayan sky at dusk. The massing deliberately avoids any gesture that might compete with the Potala's silhouette visible from the upper floors, choosing horizontal spread over vertical ambition. Inside, the interiors translate the same vocabulary into warm timber — mahogany-toned woodwork panelling bedroom walls and latticed screens dividing sleeping from living areas, while carved cloud motifs rendered in relief against pale headboard panels pull directly from classical Tibetan decorative language. The 162 rooms and suites carry a palette of tobacco, saffron, and cream, grounded by close-pile carpeting and round-pedestalled side tables in figured timber. In the restaurant, gilded-frame paintings of Tibetan nomadic life hang beside a vertical arrangement of yak skulls decorated in the regional style — an anthropological seriousness that keeps the cultural references from sliding into pastiche. The terrace dining platform, cantilevered over a reflecting pool between tall white pilasters clad in dark timber, carries the monastic geometry outward into the night.

"Our time spent here was most amazing. These posted pictures don't do it justice. From the moment we arrived, we were approached and treated with welcome spirits and sincere smiles. The grounds are perfectly maintained, and it's obvious that nothing is missed when maintaining this hotel. My wife felt like a princess as we never had to search for anyone to assist us. Every staff member we encountered went over and above and beyond our expectations. I feel like we made friends while we were there, as everyone treated us with genuine joy and a sincere desire to please us. I will say, the manager, Danielle, (I may have mispelled this), definitely made certain our stay was memorable and special. Danielle, always extended herself to us, if only to greet us and ask if she could do anything to make our stay more special. She made certain I had a birthday greeting, and she was so personable and quite the added value to this establishment."

"Absolutely beautiful hotel. Very kind staff. Well appointed. Restaurant offered a nice menu and a very large breakfast selection. Waiter Buddha was awesome! One one the best views of the Palace is from the 6th floor bar terrace."

"Amazing and beautiful grounds. Warm welcoming ceremony and speedy check in. Rooms can be spread out, either in main building, or one of the pavillions which is not linked to main building. This may be a minor point elsewhere, but at this altitude, and very chilling nights, it can be a nuisance to get to bar/breakfast etc. But sadly this hotel is NOT what the brand of St Regis is known for. The service is so so at best, there are NO on site amenities besides a small bar (where staff spoke little English), and a smoking bar (seriously!!?!). No pool, no sauna, no spa, no gym!! How do you call yourself a 5 star St Regis?? Then there are issues with rooms (my bathtub doesn't work, they run out of hot water mid afternoon) and the common area washroom doors do NOT close and the fixtures are literally falling of the walls. Room service used dishes (with food) left in hallway for almost a full day with no pick up (despite the housekeeping staff doing the rooms). The rooms are huge and well appointed, with bathrooms that have tons of space and counters. But there is a step up to get to bathroom area so NOT accessible for for those with issues (and dangerously for elderly) and not sure why it is needed, especially when most guests will be short of breath for at least the first day given altitude. All in all may be one of the best in town, but dont' expect the typical St Regis."

"Our stay at The St. Regis Lhasa Resort was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel beautifully integrates traditional Tibetan architectural elements with modern luxury, creating a serene oasis at the Roof of the World. The oxygen-enriched rooms were a brilliant touch, ensuring a comfortable adjustment to the high altitude. We were particularly mesmerized by the breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Potala Palace from the property. The signature Butler Service was impeccable, anticipating our every need with genuine warmth and professionalism. Relaxing in the iconic Gold Energy Pool at the Iridium Spa was the perfect way to unwind after exploring the city. It is an outstanding choice for anyone seeking world-class comfort and cultural immersion in Tibet. Highly recommended!"
