PB hotel design editorial

Planted in the commercial heart of Xinjiang's regional capital, where the Tianshan mountains frame a skyline caught between Central Asian tradition and contemporary Chinese urban ambition, Conrad Urumqi rises as a slender curtain-walled tower whose warm golden illumination at dusk makes it read as a lantern held up against the steppe. The tower's massing — rounded at the crown, articulated with vertical glass fins — carries a considered restraint against the denser commercial fabric surrounding it, and the lobby renders that restraint meaningless in the best possible way: soaring arched openings framed in brass, a double-height atrium ceiling of radiating timber-and-gold lattice work, verde marble inlaid flooring in geometric patterns that draw on the region's deep Islamic decorative heritage, and a cascading brass chain installation suspended at the centre like a textile frozen mid-movement. The guest rooms maintain a quieter register — headboards clad in pressed geometric relief panels in grey and silver, oak-effect wide-plank flooring, and a palette of sage, amber, and terracotta that pulls warmth from the surrounding landscape without resorting to heavy-handed cultural signposting. The bar takes a more theatrical turn: forest-green velvet sofas, burnt-orange club chairs, and a harlequin marble floor anchored by a back-bar mural of cranes against a saffron ground, the coffered ceiling lined in satin-finish bronze. Across its approximately 300 rooms and suites, Conrad Urumqi makes a genuine argument for Urumqi as a destination rather than a transit point.

"I really wanted to love the Conrad Urumqi, but it was hard. First, they communicate with you before you arrive to see if you have special requests. It’s not just the form email without any reply address. It’s a real exchange. I appreciated that. The room is beautiful. Very spacious, well designed, classic European tiled bathroom. High quality outfittings. Byredo toiletries. But then the problems start: you are greeted at reception with a notice saying the swimming pool is closed “to give guests a better swimming experience.” Except that if you’re there during the maintenance period, you lose. They could have put a notice on the website or informed guests before arrival. Instead, you feel duped. The hotel boasts about the great facilities, and then makes it impossible to use them, either by closing it, or having restricted opening hours. This used to be a tactic in the early days of China opening up. I thought, with a top tier international brand, and today’s multiple communication methods, they should be more honest. Nope. Second issue: I spent my whole time in the hotel sweating in the 28-29 degree (celcius) fixed heating. The room has an individual thermostat, giving you the impression that you have control over the temperature. this is false. No matter what temperature you set, the room stays at 28 degrees. I had to change rooms, thinking that it was just a quirk of my room. It was not. The whole place is heated to the max. I spent the entire night waking up every hour drenched in sweat. The following morning when I checked out, the staff admitted that the system overrides the in- room controls. Even at reception, the windows were open and cooling fans were blowing, lest the whole place overheat. Beautiful space, but what a waste. Disregard the picture of the gym on the website . The actual gym is decent – new Technogym cardio equipment, a squat and bench rack, leg incline, double pulley. They didn’t have any pin weight machines, but it was enough for a decent workout. I am torn about the Conrad. I want to love this hotel. The staff really want to please. They’re honest, they will go the mile when asked, but they need to inform guests about the real conditions in the hotel, and also fix the temperature control."

"We were a family traveling to Urumqi for 4 nights. The Conrad was an incredible stay, as we expected. What went beyond the normal 5-star experience was the thoughtfulness of the staff. We traveled with an elderly person (almost 90 yr old). At breakfast, executive lounge, staff approached us offering help. The 1st evening, Victoria at reception texted us on WeChat, proactively asking if we needed temperature adjustment, anti-slip mat in the shower, etc (we asked for, and was delivered a shower stool very quickly). All done with genuine, pleasant attitude."

"I had a wonderful stay at Conrad Urumqi. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and everything was very clean and well maintained. The atmosphere throughout the hotel felt very relaxing and luxurious. What really made the experience special was the excellent service. I would especially like to thank Allen from the concierge team, who was incredibly helpful during my stay. He assisted with luggage, helped arrange deliveries, and always made sure any requests were handled quickly. His professionalism and warm attitude truly reflected the high service standards of the hotel. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I would definitely stay here again when visiting Urumqi. Highly recommended!"
