PB hotel design editorial

Two tapering glass towers rising from Xiamen's Binhai shoreline, their silhouettes curved like paired sails catching wind off the Taiwan Strait, give the Conrad Xiamen one of the more dramatically legible addresses in mainland Chinese hospitality. The towers — reaching approximately 60 floors and clad in dark curtain-wall glazing edged with LED detailing that illuminates the crowns at night — were designed to read as a unified composition from the water, the taller structure housing the hotel while the second serves a mixed residential and commercial program. The pier extending into the strait beside them anchors the complex to the coastline in a gesture that emphasizes how completely this part of Siming District has been remade around the seafront. Inside, the interiors take a quieter approach than the exterior theatrics might suggest. Guest rooms are finished in pale oak flooring, walnut-veneer joinery, and upholstered headboard panels in warm sand tones, with horizontal landscape paintings above the beds drawing a deliberate line back to Chinese ink-wash traditions. Black pendant lamps with brass detailing hang either side of the bed in a restrained mid-century register. The upper-floor restaurant deploys full-height curved glazing to dissolve the boundary between dining room and open sea, pendant lights in smoked glass descending from a double-height ceiling, while the indoor pool — tiled in turquoise mosaic beneath a sculpted white ceiling of concentric elliptical ridges — turns the Taiwan Strait into a continuous horizon beyond floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Our anticipated pleasant weekend getaway fell decidedly short of expectations, prompting us to cut our stay short to a single night. From the moment of check-in, we were subjected to an unwelcome hard sell. Despite my Hilton Honors status, which I hoped might warrant a courtesy upgrade, we were instead offered an "upgrade" to a water-view room for an extra CNY 900, later "deeply discounted" to CNY 500. Furthermore, due to a booking error on my part for one adult, I was charged CNY 110 for a second breakfast—again advertised as a "deep discount" from a purported CNY 220. I later discovered the standard rate for two breakfasts would have been only CNY 180 (CNY 90 per person), revealing their so-called discount to be entirely misleading. Service standards throughout were profoundly lacking. The turndown service was perfunctory: bed covers were turned down, but our bottled water was not replenished, and used bathroom towels were not replaced. A significant inconvenience occurred when I visited the spa: the Front Desk refused to allow me to charge the massage to my room, despite being a guest, and I had not brought my wallet to the appointment. The following morning's breakfast service was another disappointment. I waited over ten minutes for a simple coffee, and a further five minutes for the requested milk to accompany it. In summary, our stay was deeply unsatisfactory. The sole saving grace was an excellent and professional massage at the spa—a service unfortunately marred by the hotel's own billing policies."

"Unfortunately during my check in today for a 3 days in Conrad, I would say this is a very run down hotel. Room is old and smells sheets and bed smells even the corridor along the way smells old and smelly. If I would have another chance I would not have selected this hotel. If you’re coming here for a trip to see Xiamen, staying here will make you feel Xiamen is very rundown and old."

"Great experience staying at the Conrad Xiamen which is unmistakably THE landmark in Xiamen, with the iconic twin towers! Checking-in at the 38th floor makes the entire arrival experience even more impressive with the breathtaking views of the sea! It is regrettable we missed catching the name of the young gentleman who assisted us with our check-in. He displayed exceptional hospitality, patience and also provided tips on our planned visit to Gulangyu. We arrived slightly early and are truly grateful that we could be accommodated an earlier check-in. First impressions means a lot and he definitely ensured that we had a great start to our short getaway in Xiamen and at the Conrad Xiamen! The King Deluxe City room we had was luxuriously spacious with equally breathtaking views though our room did showed a bit of age in some areas. Location was favourable with Sha Po Wei within walking distance while Didi rides were inexpensive with reasonable travelling time from Gaoqi airport and to the different popular places we visited including Zhongshan Road. A shoutout to the Concierge team on the ground floor too. We felt especially welcomed and they never once failed to acknowledge us when we were leaving or returning to the hotel. It has been an absolute pleasure staying at the Conrad Xiamen and we truly appreciate the generous and genuine hospitality. Thank you!"

"Extend my stay in Xiamen, reserved Conrad as its location with stunning view of the ocean. Spacious bedroom and bathroom are truly amazing but the view...speechless!!! Indoor pool and gym...essential and good enough for me. Breakfast with local dishes...yummy. Must mentioned Joni from Front desk and Kobe from Concierge...so sincere and helpful with their professionalism!!! Appreciate..."
