PB hotel design editorial

Drawn out along the edge of Xiamen's Yundang Lake in the Huli District, where the city's dense skyline dissolves into water and subtropical canopy, Lohkah Hotel & Spa was conceived as a deliberate act of quietude — a low-rise sandstone-clad volume that mediates between the marina beyond and the dense planting pressed close against its flanks. The facade's warm buff masonry, articulated by vertical timber brise-soleil running the full height of the building, gives the massing a woven, almost textile quality that shifts as the light moves across it at dusk. Inside, the design language drawn through the public spaces and guestrooms pursues the same disciplined warmth: dark-stained hardwood floors, deep walnut joinery framing floor-to-ceiling glazing, and leather-upholstered platform beds that sit low and grounded against linen-toned wall panels. The bar, visible in the images, deploys a double-height screen of closely spaced timber battens to frame a cinematic view across the illuminated pool toward mature ficus trees — a spatial move that turns the exterior landscape into the room's primary artwork. Dining spaces carry the same vocabulary upward through slatted timber ceilings backlit in amber, with curved lacquered chairs in burnt sienna adding warmth against the structural geometry. Guestrooms on the upper floors open across the strait toward the Xiamen skyline, the horizontal teak decking of the infinity pool terrace establishing a calm threshold between the building and the water.

"We stayed for a week in March at the Lohkah Hotel in Xiamen It was one of the best holidays we have had. The service in the hotel from the manager Mr Fabian Lim and our Concierge Sean and everyone we dealt with was absolutely exemplary. We needed guidance as to the local highlights and we were provided with a wonderful driver Mr Zhang and guides who variously took us to -the stunning Gulangyu Island, preserved as a pedestrian only island accessible by short ferry ride from Xiamen. It has many former consulate buildings from the mid 1800s from countries such as America, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain -Quanzhou, a remarkable UNESCO city, a part of the original maritime silk road, containing a 1300 year old temple and twin pagodas from the 13th century -the earth houses at Tianluokeng: four dishes and one soup formation and Yunshuiyao: an ancient water town known for its giant Banyan trees and as well we enjoyed street food with our guide in Zhongshan Road, famous for its colonial architecture and stunning street food offerings as well as golf at Orient Golf Course Nothing was too much trouble for Lohkah Hotel to places of interest to us. The hotel is beautifully located, has an amazing 56 m swimming pool pool and a stunning spa with beauty and health activities. Our special favourite was the sound healing class. We were also guided to local highlights such as the walk around the Wuyuan Bay Wetland Park and the nearby Xiamen International Yacht Club from which we were taken on a stunning cruise around the bay And there were other special one off excursions we requested The restaurants in the hotel are stunning. The flagship Michelin restaurant was perfect for sunset dinners offering elegant Fujian and cantonese cuisine. Our everyday restaurant was the AMOY with its fusion offerings of French mediterranean combined with Eastern influences. Its breakfast offerings were stunning We so enjoyed the view from our room 1501 over the Wuyan Bay Marina, the inner bay and skyline as well as the Wuyan Bay bridge. And the benefit of a direct flight from Melbourne on a daily basis added to the convenience and relaxation of the holiday"
