PB hotel design editorial

Planting a Ritz-Carlton in Xi'an's Yanta District — a city whose identity is inseparable from Tang dynasty grandeur and the terracotta armies buried beneath its plains — sets up an immediate cultural negotiation, and the Ritz-Carlton Xi'an navigates it with more conviction than most. The tower rises some thirty floors above a broad boulevard in Xi'an's rapidly developed high-tech zone, its dark glass curtain wall and recessed crown articulating a contemporary urban profile that, at night, dissolves into the illuminated skyline rather than competing with it. The interiors draw their language from classical Chinese craftsmanship rather than archaeological pastiche. Guestrooms pair warm oak panelling and slatted timber ceilings with deeply embossed headboard panels whose geometric lacquerwork motifs echo the carved latticework of Tang and Song architecture without literal reproduction. Furniture throughout — the barrel-sided lounge chairs, the open-frame display shelving, the low daybeds positioned toward floor-to-ceiling city views — sits within a palette of bronze, dark walnut, and chamois leather that keeps the rooms grounded and residential. The indoor pool carries that same geometric sensibility into its mosaic tile floor, a six-pointed star pattern pressed into cobalt blue. At the rooftop bar, dark granite forms the counter base and back-bar surround, the slatted timber ceiling pulling warmth from the stone's severity — a room that holds the tension between material weight and the luminous city spread below.

"Our stay was exceptional from start to finish. The newest hotel Xi'an is beautifully appointed, with elegant rooms, impeccable service, and a level of hospitality that truly stands out. A special thank you to Ruby Shen, who went above and beyond to assist us with railway transportation arrangements. Even though we ultimately did not need the transportation, she invested time and care to ensure we understood our options and had everything organized. Her professionalism, patience, and genuine desire to help made a lasting impression. We also highly recommend making a dinner reservation at Flair. The staff there were incredibly attentive and helpful, and the overall dining experience was outstanding. Throughout our stay, we did not experience any communication challenges—the staff spoke excellent English and made everything seamless and comfortable for us. It’s service like this that defines a true luxury experience. We are very grateful and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Xi’an."

"We normally do not like luxury hotels associated with the Marriott brand, however this Ritz-Carlton is an exceptional hotel. The service from start to finish, and notably at Flair bar, is attentive and friendly. The food and cocktails were delicious as well. What makes this hotel stand out is their great service (our transfer from airport to hotel was seamless), their modern clean aesthetics, and their breakfast NOODLE bar!!! The noodle bar is not to be missed! Thank you for a short and sweet stay!!"

"A great hotel experience! The staff were friendly, our room was modern, and the amenities were top-notch. We especially enjoyed the sumptuous breakfast buffet, which featured both Asian and Western options."

"On Dec 31, I had breakfast, lunch and dinner in the hotel, no outside food at all for the entire day. The meals were pricy, with dinner especially so. The dinner private room minimum spend was RMB 8,000! 2AM that night I became extremely sick—intense vomiting and diarrhea continuously for 3 hours. I couldn’t keep water or medicine down, and I was stuck in bed for 2 days. The illness was severe enough that it forced changes to our entire travel plan, and I had to extend my stay an additional night because I wasn’t well enough to even get out of bed. Paid all the change fees and hotel stay out of pocket. The cost alone makes this outrageous, but what made it worse was the handling afterward. The hotel took only some food sample for testing and seemed to ignore the rest of the meal. Then I was told it was the holiday and to wait—with no clear timeline, accountability, or immediate solution, despite the real health impact and the costs we incurred. 9 days later, still nothing about the testing results. Sure, hotel staff offered to go to the hospital with us to help with translation but I couldn’t even get up, let alone travel and wait in the hospital for hours. When a full day of meals—especially a dinner that cost nearly a thousand yuan per person—ends in acute gastroenteritis, a ruined holiday, and an endlessly delayed response, any surface-level of “good service” becomes meaningless. Attached are the prescription and food receipts."
