PB hotel design editorial

The Club Cartagena inscription carved into the balustrade of a blush-painted beaux-arts facade tells only part of the story. That 1920s building is one of several centuries-old Getsemaní landmarks — among them a 16th-century San Francisco cloister and temple — that WATG, led by principal architect José María Rodríguez with historic restoration work by Ricardo Sánchez and Angelina Vélez, has unified into the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena, opening in 2026 as one of the most architecturally layered hotel projects in South America. The program brings 131 rooms across 27 Spanish colonial-style heritage rooms and contemporary additions, a glass atrium lobby, two rooftop pools, and a ballroom sheltering a rediscovered centuries-old fresco beneath a brick dome. The interiors navigate between those inherited layers with real intelligence. François Catroux served as lead interior designer — a posthumous commission — giving the guest rooms their warm terracotta palette: floor-to-ceiling leather headboards with nailhead borders, carved colonial-style chests, geometric-print textiles drawn from regional craft traditions. AvroKO handled the food and beverage spaces, and the restaurant visible in the images shows their hand clearly: Art Deco pendant lights in bronze and amber glass, dark stone bar tops, branching metalwork framing the back-bar alcove. From the rooftop pool, teak loungers face across a terracotta skyline toward the domed bulk of San Pedro Claver, the whole composition bathed in the amber Caribbean dusk that Cartagena does better than anywhere.

Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena Reviews

"Truly incredible property adjacent to the old city in Cartagena. Outstanding in just about every way. From the incredibly warm service, to the delicious food, to the luxurious rooms and the wonderful amenities, this stay was the highlight of a 10 day trip to Colombia. As the hotel was only open a month, there were really no kinks to work out except for nightly turn down service was forgotten one night. I mentioned it to the front desk and no attempt was made to make things right which was the only negative to a memorable stay. Look forward to returning in the near future."

"After three flights we arrived at the hotel exhausted and without our luggage due to it mis-connecting. Not a great start to our trip, but the Four Seasons Cartagena team leapt into action and sent us every amenity imaginable to try to help us make the best of the situation, even going out to pickup a full size premium toothpaste unexpectedly. They also did the heavy lifting in chasing up the airline so we could go out and make the most of our vacation. A special shout out to Stephania who was our hero of the day, even sorting out a late check out days in advance with re-programmed keys for a seamless experience. Breakfast was another highlight, with the highest quality of in-house made delights spread across both a buffet and à la carte menu. The fresh fruits, omelettes, fresh juices and French toast were particular highlights. The service at breakfast, like everywhere else at all times, was faultless. Returning from the heat of the city to a cold towel and blast of cold AC was a delight, and the guys on the front door soon learned our names and it was like returning home. The pool deck was another winner with attentive service and great views. Thank you to everyone working there for your warmth and making our trip what it was. If you’re considering staying here, do it before the prices rocket! They surely will over time."

"This stay was truly unforgettable, as the hotel took care of all our requests even before our arrival. At check-in, we were assisted by Robin and Ernesto, who were extremely courteous, kind, and above all, very attentive to my need to feel safe in the country. Their advice and reassuring words helped me feel at ease from the very beginning. Our assigned bellman, Juan, was completely professional; he guided us and showed us around the property on the way to our room, making for an excellent first impression. On our first day, we visited Rialto, the café located in the lobby. The experience was wonderful, Alejandra explained and shared the history behind the coffee preparation. I even left with several bags of San Alberto coffee because it was absolutely delicious. We also had a reservation at the Grand Grill steakhouse, where the service, food, and ambiance were perfect. Every morning, I had breakfast at Limar, where the staff was always very kind and even provided recommendations on places to visit in Cartagena. We had a minor health issue during our stay, and the hotel handled it wonderfully. They prepared soups for us and arranged for medication delivery to help us recover. Thank you all so much for that support. A special thanks to the bell staff, as without them I would have gotten lost. I felt safe at all times. I spent time at the pool every day because the heat was quite intense. Despite that, the team provided excellent service and did everything possible to keep us comfortable and happy. Thank you for the mimosas! Kevin, Yari, and the rest of the team (even if I can’t remember every name) made each day more enjoyable. Ernesto also gave us a historical tour of the hotel, which we truly loved. In short, I highly recommend this place. Thank you for making our stay an unforgettable experience. And thank you to everyone: Robin Kevin Camilo Stephania Ernesto Yari Javier Alejandra Juan"

"Absolutely incredible stay. The hotel itself is stunning- one of the most beautiful properties we’ve experienced — but what really made it special was the service. From start to finish, everything exceeded expectations, from the breakfast to the overall attentiveness of the staff. A special thank you to Aileen Garavito and Daniela Schotborgh for their exceptional hospitality, and to Raul for going above and beyond to upgrade our room, which made our stay even more memorable. Also, a big shoutout to the pool staff, especially Kevin and David, who were consistently attentive and made every moment by the pool seamless and enjoyable. All in all, an amazing experience — we can’t wait to return."
