PB hotel design editorial

Behind a saffron-washed colonial facade on Calle San Juan de Dios in Cartagena's San Diego neighbourhood, a sequence of whitewashed arches and exposed coral-stone walls survive from a structure that predates the republic itself. Nacar Hotel Cartagena, part of Hilton's Curio Collection, was adapted from this historic mansion and opened in 2014 with 47 rooms arranged around the original courtyard, the colonial bones left deliberately visible — most forcefully in the restaurant arcade, where rough-hewn coral masonry and timber beam ceilings frame a candlelit dining room that opens onto the pool terrace through a series of double arches worn smooth with age. The interior treatment deliberately works against those ancient surfaces rather than echoing them. Guest rooms are finished in cream limestone tile, white plaster, and walnut-veneer headboards with LED underlighting that gives the platform beds a weightless quality — a crisp, contemporary register that turns the thick-walled colonial shell into something closer to a background hum than a decorative statement. Indigo ikat cushions and striped textiles introduce local colour without tipping into folkloric territory. On the rooftop, a long lap pool edged in glass balustrade and lined with turquoise umbrellas and teak-framed daybeds sits entirely above the old city's roofline, the Caribbean light catching the water in a way that makes the sixteenth-century streets below feel like a different century entirely — which, of course, they are.

"This boutique hotel is perfectly located in a quiet area within the Walled City. There are actually two parts: the main building on Calle del Curato and a secondary smaller building around the corner on Calle del Sargento Mayor. We stayed at the main building with all the facilities but did stop by the atmospheric secondary building one evening for a complimentary corozo welcome drink. On checking-in, things started very well with a complimentary upgrade to a junior suite as recognition of our Hilton status and an early check-in. Unfortunately, the room on the 3rd floor had recently been repainted and the smell was overpowering. We subsequently noticed that much of the hotel had been repainted but in quite an amateur way as there were small paint splashes in lots of places, especially on the balconies. We then had to wait for nearly two hours while another room on the floor below was prepared. It would have been nice if we had been offered something for the inconvenience such as a complimentary drink or lunch. We eventually made it to our newly assigned room...thankfully no paint smell albeit there was a musky smell (which we accepted). The junior suite was quite nice with a large walk-in shower and dressing area partitioned from the bedroom. Dressing robes were provided but no slippers. There was a small gym in the basement and an equally small pool on the 4th floor which also featured the rooftop restaurant. The restaurant was quite noisy with fans and music but it did have a vibe. On the downside, we found the service very slow and they served their drinks without any accompanying snacks. Also, the Wi-Fi was very sketchy. Breakfast was quite limited. It consisted of a small buffet with only two hot dishes (scrambled eggs and mixed vegetables) together with some cooked to order egg dishes. Some of the buffet items were never replenished and the French toast we ordered arrived badly burnt. On our second day there was zero service at breakfast as no waiters had arrived for work at opening time! We just looked after ourselves which was fine. Overall, the location is unbeatable but the service needs some improvement we felt."

"5 star for the price and what you get: great location, clean comfortable room, upscale property and restaurant. Nice rooftop and pool area. There are more luxurious hotels more expensive hotels I am sure but this one punches above its weight for value and perfectly hits all the most important notes for a great stay."

"A perfect location for our stays pre and post cruise along the Magdalena River, close to many restaurants and shops. Rooms were very nice and comfortable. The breakfast buffet at the Uma restaurant was varied with plenty of fresh fruit. All of the staff were courteous and professional, a very special thanks to Nellys for all her help throughout both of our recent stays. She was very professional, plus, friendly and extremely helpful! We'd also like to recognize the following employees for their wonderful service - Jeremy, Freddy, Elwin, Fabien and Luis David. Thank you all!"

"I enjoyed my stay here (although I did book one of the largest rooms, so I can't comment on standard size rooms), and I would consider staying at this hotel again but there are some considerations I think others should be aware of: 1) This could be a big deal for some people, but there is no bidet/bumgun in the bathroom. It's quite common in Colombia so this was a bit surprising. 2) The main entrance door to the hotel is closed after a certain hour which is not a big deal but you do need to knock to have someone open the front door. The security guard is almost always close by. 3) The buffet breakfast costs about $20 USD which is a bit high. 4) The pool on the roof is nice and there is a bar, but English is not well spoken by many of the staff. Given the price of the hotel and the rating, I would have expected more English to be spoken. 5) There are about 6-8 day beds and it's not easy to secure one. If you want a day bed, you should probably arrive early. Otherwise, most of the other seating are just regular chairs, I don't recall seeing any loungers. 6) The internet was generally reliable. There was one short outage once in about 6 days, but that was resolved within 5-10 minutes."
