PB hotel design editorial

Arenal Volcano — one of Central America's most geologically active cones, its near-perfect silhouette rising from the rainforest of Costa Rica's Alajuela province — provides the organizing logic for everything at Amor Arenal. The property's cluster of steep-pitched bungalows, their terracotta rooflines visible from the air as scattered marks against dense tropical canopy, was designed to keep the volcano constantly in frame. The architectural language draws on vernacular Costa Rican craft: hand-laid volcanic stone walls, exposed structural timber in dark hardwood, and brick accent walls that ground each bungalow with a tactile warmth the surrounding greenery only amplifies. Inside, the gable ends of each villa are glazed floor to ridge with triangulated glass panels, framing Arenal directly from the bed and pulling sky into spaces that might otherwise feel enclosed by all that timber and stone. Floors throughout are polished tropical hardwood — likely guanacaste or cristóbal — laid in wide planks that pick up the amber tones of the exposed ceiling frames above. Bedcovers in patchwork ochre and red reference regional textile traditions without straining for ethnographic authenticity. The pool terrace, lined in ipe decking and edged with curvilinear volcanic-stone coping, is planted with heliconia, ginger, and queen palms that blur any clear boundary between garden and forest. The bar and restaurant structure opens entirely to a covered outdoor deck, dark slate flooring inside transitioning to warm hardwood boards outside — a threshold the humid Arenal air crosses without interruption.

"The Amor Arenal is the most beautiful and scenic guest room and public space I have ever experienced. Every need is met and every amenity is first class. The surrounding rain forest is touchable from your room and accessible when guided by the staff naturalist on the Amor hiking trails. This rooms are spacious and spotless. The food was delicious and beautiful. The bar service was creative and tasty. Every member is staff was attentive and conversational. The campus is on a hillside so be prepared for a little exercise as you move about."

"It was a little taste of paradise...Quiet, beautiful and so clean. We enjoyed everything, from the private hot tub, to the delicious food and the invigorating guided hike with Rosbin. Every staff member was helpful, friendly and kind. They were willing and eager to show us the sloths, monkeys and snakes, whenever they saw them. We would love to go back there someday!"

"We were a family of 4 with a 13 yo boy and 16 yo daughter. The setting was absolutely gorgeous with stunning views of the volcano. Our villa looks exactly like the pictures on their website. Quality of everything in the room was excellent. You are in the rainforest so there is an occasional bug that sneaks into the room especially if you aren’t good about keeping the doors closed to your villla. The hot tub on the balcony was awesome. There are alcoholic beverages in your room that are included with your room cost along with a daily breakfast. We also had dinner 2 of the 3 nights we were there. Both the breakfast and dinners were amazing! My daughter and myself had a relaxation massage which was one of the best I have had and the setting of the massage was so beautiful as it was in a space open to the surrounding nature. All of the staff are so nice and go out of their way to help you. I can’t say enough good things!! Also, because it’s a not a huge resort, you never have to worry about getting reaervations for mealtimes or have a wait. Same goes for access to their beautiful pool areas, one of which is heated! Just amazing. I can’t wait to come back and stay here!"

"My husband and I recently stayed at Amor Arenal for our honeymoon. The entire resort had this surreal, cinematic feeling. We kept joking that it felt like we were living in our own Netflix episode of The White Lotus, but set in the Costa Rican rainforest. The casitas are simply wonderful, it's like your own private retreat in the rainforest. It had floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor deck, and a private plunge pool overlooking the forest, that is nice and hot (if you want it to be--you get to choose!). Waking up to the sounds of birds and wildlife with views of the volcano was magical. The entire property is stunning and features trails, lush landscaping, and incredible views. It feels luxurious while still being completely immersed in nature. The staff made the experience even better. Every single person there was SO friendly and attentive. They made a point to show us wildlife whenever spotted on the grounds, daily housekeeping was superb, I could go on and on. The restaurants were also fantastic and made it easy to relax and enjoy the time we had there. If you’re looking for a romantic, peaceful, and beautiful place to stay near Arenal Volcano, this resort is truly special. We absolutely loved our time here and would return without hesitation. If I could do it all over again, I would have had our family fly here and do the wedding and celebratory festivities on site. It was incredible."
