PB hotel design editorial

Arenal Volcano, one of the most symmetrically formed stratovolcanoes in the Americas, provides the organizing drama for everything at Nayara Gardens — and the property is wise enough to know it. Set within the rainforest corridor outside La Fortuna in Costa Rica's Alajuela province, the resort deploys its private-pool villas across dense tropical grounds, positioning each structure so that the volcano's cone appears framed rather than incidental. The architecture draws from a pan-tropical vocabulary — exposed timber frames with angled bracket joints, deep-pitched roofs, and full-height sliding glass walls — that owes as much to Balinese resort design as to Central American vernacular building. Inside the villas, warm-toned hardwood floors run beneath four-poster beds draped in white mosquito netting, their carved teak headboards and rattan-accented furnishings reinforcing the Southeast Asian inflection that runs through much of Nayara's design language. Botanical print cushions and framed wildlife prints ground the interiors in their actual geography. The main restaurant, visible in the images, is the property's most resolved interior space: a largely open-sided pavilion with a split-bamboo ceiling, dark hardwood floors polished to a lacquer depth, travertine-pedestal tables, and Thonet-derived bentwood cane chairs suspended beneath paper lantern pendants — a composition that carries the feeling of a refined tropical brasserie without the self-consciousness such settings often accumulate. The pool terrace, orange cabana pods vibrant against the jungle canopy, frames Arenal with an almost theatrical precision.

"Nayara Gardens is probably the best hotel / resort our family has been lucky enough to enjoy. The grounds are huge and beautiful, with winding paths all through the property. We spotted sloths (some with babies), toucans, numerous birds, and loads of toads. The property has a number of pools and also hot springs ... one day we didn't go anywhere, as we simply wanted to enjoy all that the property had to offer. Complimentary yoga each morning was guided by Kay - an amazing instructor! She also taught a breathwork meditation class one evening with aromatherapy which was wonderful. Food and drink - excellent. The breakfast buffet each morning was our favourite, with loads of fresh juices, fruit (papaya, mango, pineapple), and healthy options like chia, granola, nuts, seeds, yogourt, as well as egg dishes, pastries, etc. My daughter loved the milkshakes they made at the poolside bar. We've stayed at other nice places (Four Seasons, Andaz) which are all great, but Nayara felt special. I think the personality of the place, and the wonderful staff that make you feel genuinely welcome may explain it. It is also tremendously luxurious, in that the property is very large and well staffedf given the number of guests ... we had the hot springs to ourselves on more than one occasion. Cannot say enough good things. Highly recommend."

"This was our 15th yearly visit to Nayara and every year, it keeps getting better! We once again spent 12 delightful nights at Nayara Gardens where their attention to detail is amazing and we were in awe on a daily basis! It starts at the top, with phenomenal management, thank you Luis and Jairo, and their great staff! From the moment we checked in, our every want was fulfilled and exceeded! We loved our incredible buffet breakfasts every morning at La Terraza and our dinners at Mis Amores and Asia Luna were delicious! The resorts head chef, John Luca, makes sure every meal, at every restaurant, is a true experience, and we are still talking about many of those meals! We are already booked for 2 weeks in 2027, as we cannot imagine our lives without our yearly two weeks in Nayara Gardens Paradise! Total Pura Vida! ❤️"

"Really a very beautiful hotel. What makes this place standout, however, is the staff. The staff goes above and beyond to assure that your experience is perfect. Admittedly, we had a slight hiccup upon check-in. We made our unhappiness known, and the manager fixed everything exceeding our expectations. Really top notch customer service in our opinion. And, frankly, it’s the little touches that make this place stand out - the free laundry done for you at your request, the complimentary mini-bar. I don’t think people mind spending for luxury when it feels luxurious. Nayara does that beautifully. Kudos to them."

"My husband and I had the best experience at Nayara Gardens, what a truly beautiful, and peaceful haven. Our room was stunning, the gardens surrounding our casita, as well as the gardens across the entire property, are so beautifully curated and tended to. The property was expansive and felt very private, each pathway and bridge felt like another piece of the jungle to explore. Our room itself was gorgeous, a private pool and an outdoor shower being two of our favorite features. The king size bed was so comfortable and we enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of rain and waking up to the sounds of birds chirping and howler monkeys (it was really cool, trust me!) Every pool and lounge we went to was pristine with stunning surroundings and views. The nature surrounding the property and the way the location itself is nestled into it is simply amazing, we'd go back in a heartbeat!! The food across all of their restaurants was fantastic with Amor Loco being a stand out, their tasting menu was truly stunning, not to mention incredibly delicious. Each day, we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast as well, with rotating specials, an impressive array of pastries and perfectly fresh fruits (there was even more, these were just some of my favorites!) Nayara was also incredibly helpful with coordinating activities and each guide we had was incredibly knowledgeable, kind and professional. From white water rafting to a hike across hanging bridges to a class in all things coffee, we had so many fun experiences, provided by Nayara, during our stay. I sincerely cannot say enough positive things about this resort and would recommend it very highly."
