PB hotel design editorial

Arenal Volcano, one of the most symmetrically formed stratovolcanoes in the Americas, provides the organizing drama for everything at Nayara Gardens — and the property is wise enough to know it. Set within the rainforest corridor outside La Fortuna in Costa Rica's Alajuela province, the resort deploys its private-pool villas across dense tropical grounds, positioning each structure so that the volcano's cone appears framed rather than incidental. The architecture draws from a pan-tropical vocabulary — exposed timber frames with angled bracket joints, deep-pitched roofs, and full-height sliding glass walls — that owes as much to Balinese resort design as to Central American vernacular building. Inside the villas, warm-toned hardwood floors run beneath four-poster beds draped in white mosquito netting, their carved teak headboards and rattan-accented furnishings reinforcing the Southeast Asian inflection that runs through much of Nayara's design language. Botanical print cushions and framed wildlife prints ground the interiors in their actual geography. The main restaurant, visible in the images, is the property's most resolved interior space: a largely open-sided pavilion with a split-bamboo ceiling, dark hardwood floors polished to a lacquer depth, travertine-pedestal tables, and Thonet-derived bentwood cane chairs suspended beneath paper lantern pendants — a composition that carries the feeling of a refined tropical brasserie without the self-consciousness such settings often accumulate. The pool terrace, orange cabana pods vibrant against the jungle canopy, frames Arenal with an almost theatrical precision.

"We thought a resort in the forest was going to be plain. When we arrived the place felt warm and relaxing. The room and layout were great. A large plunge pool that you could see from the bed just made you want to be in either one. The view of the forest from the deck and pool just made you want to hang out there all day. There are animals in the trees. Breakfast is included but having it on the patio made it feel special. The grounds always had us feel like we were in the forest and that was nice. The three restaurants were good. I like seafood and they were really fresh in each one. Overall the price might seem high staying here but once you arrive you will see it’s worth it. When we come back to Costa Rica we will be staying here again."

"This is a beautiful hotel on a very steep slope. Fortunately, my villa was close to reception and a restaurant. The villa was beautiful. Specious bedroom with various seating areas and a big comfortable bed. The bathroom was also big and light, with a massive indoor and outdoor shower. My villa also had a big deck with a lounge area and a heated plunge pool. The minibar was free and there were fruit, coffee and tea. What was also a huge plus was, that laundry was complimentary, which was useful as I had been travelling for a few days already. You could also choose what time you wanted your room cleaned. The staff are all nice and helpful. The food was good, especially breakfast with plenty of choices. I used the spa which was very nicely situated and very relaxing. I did not see any animals on the grounds, except for 1 sleeping sloth way up in a tree and a lizard on the roof of reception. I did organize my own Sloth tour in La Fortuna which was really nice and we saw sloths there, poison dart frogs, a porcupine, and birds. If you have mobility issues this hotel might not be for you as it has steep hills and the pathways are winding and confusing. There are buggies though you can call that will get you around. The hotel is a perfect place to unwind for a few days but also with lots to do in the area."

"We had an absolutely exceptional stay at Nayara Gardens. The hotel is truly beautiful, with outstanding facilities, breathtaking surroundings, and impeccable service. What made our experience even more special was the kindness and attention of the staff. We arrived on the day of our 7-year-old son's birthday, and the team surprised him with balloons and a small birthday cake waiting in our room. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made him feel incredibly special and created a memory our family will never forget. Throughout our stay, every member of the staff was warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making our visit perfect. We highly recommend Nayara to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience. We will certainly return on a future trip—it is a place we will always remember with great affection."

"Literally no notes. This place is pure perfection. They have thought of everything. The service is flawless, the accommodations are amazing and it is so peaceful. It is so wonderful and if you are questioning whether you should book it, absolutely. Just don’t go to another hotel after on your trip because it will be a letdown. This place is pure magic"
