PB hotel design editorial

Arenal Volcano rising cloud-wreathed above the rainforest canopy of Costa Rica's La Fortuna region provides the organizing drama around which Nayara Tented Camp has arranged its thirty-five canvas-roofed pavilions — each one positioned on the hillside to hold that cone in view. The camp, which opened in 2019 as an extension of the broader Nayara resort complex, draws its formal language from the African safari lodge tradition while translating it into a Central American rainforest context, the tawny canvas tent skins and raw timber structural poles exchanging savanna dust for tropical green. Inside, the pavilions carry the atmosphere of a well-traveled naturalist's retreat rather than a glamping shorthand. Dark-stained hardwood floors run beneath four-poster beds draped in sheer white mosquito curtains, botanical-print wallpapers pressed against caramel-toned canvas walls, and tufted settees positioned at the foot of each bed. Woven rattan chair backs appear throughout — in the bedrooms and again in the open-sided restaurant, where unpeeled log columns support a slatted timber ceiling that diffuses light without closing the space off from the surrounding jungle. The infinity pool, finished in dark stone tile, curves around the forest edge at the property's upper terrace, its sight line directed squarely at Arenal's summit. Every design decision here subordinates itself to that single geographic fact.

About

Nayara Tented Camp is perched on a clifftop with the vibrant rainforest below. Built on stilts to maximize stunning vistas and leave a minimal footprint, the camp offers couples a secluded and romantic experience or a fun and educational adventure for the whole family. Inspired by African safaris but conceived in the tropical Costa Rican rainforest, the tents blend sustainable luxury with a “Pura Vida” vibe. The camp is situated on what was once a barren cattle ranch. We planted thousands of trees and plants, restoring wildlife and transforming the landscape into a thriving ecosystem. Our luxurious mineral hot spring and outdoor showers under the stars provide unforgettable experiences for those who cherish self-care. It's a perfect place to reset and recharge, far from civilization and close to nature. Great sleep is aided by the calming sounds of the rainforest. The area is home to a diverse array of birds, wildlife, and a sloth sanctuary.

"We booked this trip three months in advance after seeing the awards granted on TripAdvisor, Michelin and Travel & Leisure, and rated among the 100 best hotels in the world. We have traveled our whole life and stayed in many resorts and Nayara’s Tented Camp is by far the best we have ever stayed at. It’s completely embedded in Nature, nestled in the tropical rainforest surrounded with beautiful trees and with a breathtaking view of the Arenal Volcano. Everything was simply just amazing, the moment we were inside we felt some special energy, the beautiful romantic facilities, great swimming pool, swim up bar and several private Jacuzzis. The friendly, smiling, humble and professional staff made our vacation more wonderful than we could ever expect. Luis, the manager, was always very attentive and helpful. We enjoyed the open-air private spa facing the forest and listening to Nature’s beautiful music. During the stay I had a chocolate / coffee scrub, the aloe vera wrap, and massages! The food, especially at Eyla, was delicious. The entire staff is so excited about the new menu items from their world-renowned chef, we also enjoyed learning about fantastic wines at the Nostalgia wine bar. We had everything we desired, and our three nights’ stay was magnificent. The impeccable rooms have everything you want and so much more. Jacuzzi on the patio, two showers (one outdoors), a well-stocked mini bar, a very comfortable king bed and Housekeeping stopped by two times a day. We were lucky enough to meet with the executive chef Gianluka and try out all the restaurants at Nayara. Starting with an excellent dinner at restaurant La Terraza with live music, followed by a beautiful breakfast buffet at Mis Amores. Not forgetting about the incredible unforgettable dinner, we had at Amor Loco. Overall, a trip we will never forget and a resort we will come back to! Thank you, Nayara. Pura Vida!"

"Our stay at Nayara Tented Camp was inspired by wonderful memories of a previous visit to another Nayara Collection property in Bocas del Toro. We have long admired the brand's thoughtful architectural design, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality, so we arrived with high expectations. Our luxury tent was beautifully designed and became an experience in itself. Every detail felt intentional, from the elegant furnishings to the private plunge pool and the incredible outdoor shower, which quickly became one of my favorite features. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the accommodations offered a wonderful sense of immersion in nature while still providing every modern comfort. One small disappointment was that our tent did not enjoy the expansive volcano and canopy views featured throughout the website. Instead, our view was primarily of the surrounding trees with neighboring bungalows visible through the foliage. While still beautiful, it was different from what we had anticipated. We also experienced one afternoon where a crew of workers was in the trees directly beside our deck while we were relaxing by our private pool, which understandably diminished the sense of privacy. We shared our concerns with management, who responded with genuine care and professionalism. Their sincere apology and thoughtful adjustment to our stay reflected the level of hospitality that has made us appreciate the Nayara Collection. The experiences offered through the resort were exceptional and became the heart of our visit. We chose several private excursions, and having the opportunity to explore Costa Rica in such an intimate way created deeply meaningful connections to the region, its landscapes, and its people. The standout experience of our entire trip was surprisingly the Mixology Class with Jose. It was far more than learning to craft cocktails, it became an extraordinary journey into Costa Rican culture, history, traditions, and local ingredients. Jose is one of the most remarkable ambassadors for his country that we've ever met. His warmth, storytelling, knowledge, and passion transformed what could have been a simple activity into one of the most memorable experiences of our entire vacation. If you visit, request Jose, you will not regret it! One advantage of staying at Nayara Tented Camp is having access to all three Nayara properties, allowing guests to enjoy the restaurants, pools, and facilities throughout the collection. This adds wonderful variety to your stay. One consideration for couples seeking a particularly tranquil retreat is that Nayara Tented Camp is very family-friendly. During our visit there were many young children enjoying the resort, and at times the pools and common areas became quite lively with frequent screaming and crying. We often found ourselves retreating to the serenity of our private tent to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere we had hoped for. Families will likely appreciate this welcoming environment, but couples looking for a quieter escape may want to keep this in mind. Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay. The architecture is stunning, the accommodations are luxurious yet immersed in nature, the staff is gracious, and the experiences offered are among the finest we've encountered. For those who appreciate thoughtful design, meaningful cultural immersion, and exceptional hospitality, Nayara Tented Camp offers a memorable Costa Rican escape."
