PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a volcanic ridge above the Papagayo Gulf in Guanacaste, where the dry tropical forest drops sharply toward the Pacific, Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas arranges its villas and public pavilions to exploit one of the most commanding coastal prospects in Costa Rica. The main restaurant and bar structure, visible in the images, draws on an open-sided tropical vernacular — heavy hardwood columns, bamboo-lined ceilings, and a deep-pitched green metal roof — framing the water and the rocky offshore islets as a continuous panorama. The infinity pool, edged in travertine and lined with molded white chaise longues, extends the eye toward the horizon at the precise point where the gulf meets the Nicoya Peninsula's silhouette. The interiors take a different direction from the architecture's regionalism, pulling instead from a global eclecticism that mixes Moroccan carved-wood headboards and pierced geometric screens with Guatemalan kilim runners and hand-hammered silver lamps. Canopied four-poster beds draped in sheer white muslin anchor each villa, set on travertine tile floors warmed by layered textile rugs in coral and saffron. Carved wooden dowry chests sit at the foot of each bed, woven basket accessories and distressed painted furniture adding texture without visual weight. The open-plan connection between bedroom and outdoor shower terrace — folding hardwood and glass doors dissolving the boundary — gives each of the property's eighteen villas the atmosphere of a private compound rather than a conventional hotel room.

"Perfect stay to enjoy an intimate honeymoon experience. We loved the villa with the private infinity pool and the convenient restaurants within the property. The beach was a few minutes away and it was very secluded and had gorgeous views. Service and concierge went above and beyond to ensure that we had an amazing experience. Visiting Playa Danta is a must!"

"An absolutely outstanding stay from start to finish. The room was beautiful—private, comfortable, and perfectly designed to take in the incredible views. The service was truly top-notch; every detail was handled with care and warmth, making the whole experience feel effortless. The food was exceptional—fresh, flavorful, and easily some of the best we’ve had. And the setting… unbelievably romantic. Perfect for a special getaway. We’ll be dreaming about this place long after we leave. ✨"

"My wife and I chose Casa Chameleon Las Catalinas for a big bucket list trip. While the property is undeniably beautiful and the views are world-class, the administrative and service side of our stay was a significant source of stress. We had pre-arranged a 3-day all-inclusive package for our 5-day stay. Upon arrival, the staff seemed completely unaware of this. We were never offered the appropriate menu at Sentido Norte and spent a good portion of our vacation correcting staff who repeatedly tried to charge us for five days of all-inclusive instead of the three we booked. Even a simple anniversary package was missing on arrival, and we had to notify them of this, even though it was booked and paid for. Once it was delivered, they tried to charge us again for that as well. The most frustrating part, however, occurred after we returned home. I was notified of an additional $230 USD charge for dates after we had already checked out (including a charge for a "free" breakfast on our departure day). And the most comical part of it – they tried charging us for nuts and in-room snacks that were stolen and eaten by local wildlife because our patio sliding door didn’t lock properly. (That we informed them of, and they were not accommodating and did not show concern about the issue with the door.) Despite reaching out to the concierge, Andy, and the management team via email to resolve this clear clerical error, I received zero response. Ultimately, I had to involve my bank/Visa to force a chargeback because the hotel ignored all communication. It is disappointing that a "luxury" resort would allow a billing error to tarnish a milestone celebration and then refuse to communicate with their guests. Bottom line: Enjoy the scenery, but watch your credit card statement like a hawk. You may need your bank's help to get your money back."
