PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a volcanic ridge above the Papagayo Gulf in Guanacaste, where the dry tropical forest drops sharply toward the Pacific, Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas arranges its villas and public pavilions to exploit one of the most commanding coastal prospects in Costa Rica. The main restaurant and bar structure, visible in the images, draws on an open-sided tropical vernacular — heavy hardwood columns, bamboo-lined ceilings, and a deep-pitched green metal roof — framing the water and the rocky offshore islets as a continuous panorama. The infinity pool, edged in travertine and lined with molded white chaise longues, extends the eye toward the horizon at the precise point where the gulf meets the Nicoya Peninsula's silhouette. The interiors take a different direction from the architecture's regionalism, pulling instead from a global eclecticism that mixes Moroccan carved-wood headboards and pierced geometric screens with Guatemalan kilim runners and hand-hammered silver lamps. Canopied four-poster beds draped in sheer white muslin anchor each villa, set on travertine tile floors warmed by layered textile rugs in coral and saffron. Carved wooden dowry chests sit at the foot of each bed, woven basket accessories and distressed painted furniture adding texture without visual weight. The open-plan connection between bedroom and outdoor shower terrace — folding hardwood and glass doors dissolving the boundary — gives each of the property's eighteen villas the atmosphere of a private compound rather than a conventional hotel room.

"We arrived for dinner with our family, which on the reservation we made that clear. When we got there they sat us in the bar/couch section because they said we wanted the sunset (ummm yeah, of course we did for dinner). They were unwilling to help or accommodate us even after asking, they didn't seem to have a care in the world. This has not been our experience in Costa Rica at all, except For here and I can tell you right now we will never be back, or recommend this place to anyone ever. It was such a disappointment. This was our last night in Costa Rica too, so even more disappointing."

"We went to casa chameleon in las Catalina’s for our honeymoon and truly enjoyed every moment! The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. The included breakfast was delicious and each meal/snack we enjoyed by the pool was great too. They provide good cart shuttle into the town of Las Catalinas, but you can also walk there if you don’t mind a hill! We absolutely plan on returning!"

"Casa Chameleon has set a new bar for boutique luxury hotels in Costa Rica. I have lived in this country for 26 years and work in tourism, this is the best experience I have ever had in this country. Although the scenery in Casa Chameleon steals the show, the service and attention to detail rivals 5 star hotels anywhere in the world. Sunsets at the restaurants bar area will make you question weather you are dreaming or not, the food is creative and delicious, and the sunset villas offer the best view of any hotel in the country (at least that I have stayed in, and I've stayed in most.) Tip - Spend a little extra for the sunset villa with plunge pool, you will not be disappointed. 4-6 days here offer the perfect "reset" to return to the stress of reality. Enjoy"

"My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a wonderful week at Casa Chameleon, and it exceeded expectations. The property and our villa were private, luxurious, and impeccably maintained, with spectacular ocean views, a private plunge pool, and unforgettable sunsets from our terrace plunge pool. We especially recommend a sunset-view villa. What made our stay especially memorable was the staff. From Leni at first contact, through check-in and departure, everyone was warm, attentive, and caring. It’s hard to remember everyone however thanks to Leni, Beverly, Luis, Carlos, Giovani, Cesar, and Pablo. Special thanks to Franklin for the great service, information and conversation, and to our man Glen - what a cool dude, great recommendations and laughter! …outstanding service, great recommendations, and thoughtful hospitality. From the minute we stepped on property and throughout our stay everyone constantly addressed by our first names… what a nice touch! Note: We had a brief AC issue, but it was handled quickly and we were moved to a Villa Suite to ensure comfort. We left with incredible memories and can’t wait to return. Highly Recommend"

"Casa Chameleon is absolutely stunning. The views, the rooms, the food, and the atmosphere were everything we hoped for. It was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. If you stay here, do yourself a favor and find Glen, the cool tattooed one. From great recommendations to just making us laugh, he added so much personality to an already incredible hotel. Give that man a raise."
