Spread across a coastal bluff at the tip of Costa Rica's Peninsula Papagayo, where forested cliffs drop sharply to the Pacific and offshore islands punctuate the bay, Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, opened in 2025 as the first property of its brand tier anywhere in Central or South America. The architecture, led by 10 Design with Gensler serving as executive architect, draws its massing from the grand haciendas of Guanacaste: low-pitched roofs with deep overhangs, dark timber exposed in rafters and ridge beams, and structures that step carefully down the hillside so that the forest canopy closes around them from the aerial view. The 107 ocean-facing guestrooms and suites include tent-style accommodations on the upper slopes, their canvas walls rolling back to reveal canopy-level terraces with hammocks suspended over the tree line. BAMO's interiors bring Chorotegan cultural motifs into the material palette without forcing them into decoration. Wardrobes and headboard walls are clad in dark hardwoods with geometric lattice carving; pendant lights in hand-blown amber and bottle green glass hang beside beds finished in warm terracotta upholstery. Polished terrazzo floors cool the rooms while woven rattan, jute rugs, and locally sourced stone keep the atmosphere grounded in the specific landscape outside. At the clifftop bar, a curved counter faced in handmade green glazed tile sits under an open timber-framed pavilion, the Pacific and its island chain visible in every direction.
