PB hotel design editorial

Threaded through a dry tropical forest canyon in Guanacaste, where the Río Blanco cuts through volcanic rock toward the lowlands near Bagaces, a collection of dark-clad pavilions placed with deliberate lightness among the trees forms the physical logic of Rio Perdido. The Costa Rican studio Volio y Trejos designed the property to sit at canopy level rather than clear the land, each guest cabin finished in charcoal-painted timber that absorbs into the forest at dusk rather than announcing itself against it. The curved pool, visible at night as a glowing arc winding between tree trunks and strung lights, captures the design ambition precisely — infrastructure shaped around nature rather than imposed upon it. The interiors move between two registers depending on room category. Standard cabins present polished concrete floors, exposed painted-steel ceiling beams, linen roman blinds, and woven-cotton hammocks strung from the deck rail — a palette closer to considered casualness than to safari luxury. The suite-level rooms shift into something darker and more considered: floor-to-ceiling glass walls facing the tree canopy, cork-tile flooring, grey-toned board-and-batten wall cladding, and low sectional seating in charcoal upholstery that keeps the eye moving outward toward the forest. The cantilevered restaurant terrace, framed by black steel columns and a deep-pitched roof, extends the same structural honesty into the dining experience, teak furniture and an unobstructed view across the rocky hillside completing an architecture that earns its setting.

Rio Perdido Reviews

"Wow! What a great vacation we had at Rio Perdido! This is a beautiful resort, very tastefully designed and meticulously maintained. The food was healthy AND delicious, yet not expensive. We spent four nights. We live in Florida. Accommodations. All accommodations are free standing bungalows. The bungalows are situated facing the trees and joined by a common road and various “short cut” paths. The road is well maintained and lit for nights when you walk to the main building for dinner. We stayed in one of the West bungalows, which are the newest. The bungalow was spacious for our family of four, with a double (queen?) bed and two single beds. There was a fair amount of closet space. The place was very tastefully decorated and furnished and was spotless clean. The showers (and bath) are outdoors but private. The bungalow has floor to ceiling windows so you are always looking at nature. Main complex. There is one main building that houses reception, main dining, bar, pools, and an outdoor restaurant (The Canyon Bar). The building is 14 years old but looks new; it is very well maintained and clean. The construction used a lot of natural wood. The entire place is very tastefully designed, decorated and furnished, right down to the wood napkin rings. Food. There aren’t any/many restaurants close by so we ate all our meals on site. I would have expected to pay a big premium and was shocked by how fair the prices were. We ate well yet didn’t spend more than $200 for a meal for a family of four (except for the private diiner discussed below). Each dish ranged from very good to outstanding. Every dish tasted healthy and fresh. They only use locally-sourced products and the owner told us he had the chefs design the menu using recipes they know and love. We loved everything but highly recommend the gallos (Costa Rican tacos), the tostada appetizer with sea bass, the wood grilled octopus salad (at the Canyon Bar) and the chocolate brownie for desert. (I love sweets and this was one of the best brownies I have ever had. The chocolate was sweet but tasted natural. We ended up eating brownies after every meal.). We ate every breakfast and dinner in the main dining room and every lunch at the Canyon Bar, which is more casual. (You can wear your swimsuit.) We were celebrating our daughter’s graduation and did the private dinner on the floating platform. That was a beautiful experience. Activities. We did tubing, zip lining, hiking, and the thermal river. The tubing was fun, but not very intense. The ziplining was great! There are five separate zip lines and you had to climb up steep rock faces and/or hike a little between each one. We did two hikes - one to the “volcano look off” and another longer one to a second look off. The hikes weren’t too intense; just enough to work up an appetite. The thermal river runs through the property. There are several “wading” pools. It is deep down a gorge so very peaceful. We were alone some of the times and with other resort guests other times. It is best to wear sneakers to get down the path to the river, which involves a lot of steps and rocks. Drinks. We had great cocktails at the main bar and at the Canyon Bar. Prices were similar to what we pay in the US. Staff. All employees were friendly and helpful. Almost all spoke fluent English. This includes the wait staff at the bars and restaurants, the guides for tubing and zip lining, and all others. We used the resort shuttle service to and from the airport, which is a little more than an hour’s drive. We can’t wait to go back!"

"Rio Perdido is an absolute gem for any family looking to truly "unplug" and immerse themselves in nature without sacrificing comfort. If you’re searching for a place where the pace of life slows down the moment you cross the bridge, this is it.  The Environment & Tranquility The property is set within a massive 1,500-acre private reserve in Guanacaste, and it feels like a world of its own. The "Lost River" (Rio Perdido) itself is the heart of the experience—a natural thermal river where you can find your own little pocket of warm water tucked between canyon walls.  The bungalows are designed to blend seamlessly into the forest. Waking up to the sounds of howler monkeys and tropical birds instead of traffic or notifications is the ultimate way to disconnect. It’s incredibly peaceful; you can spend hours just sitting on your private terrace feeling like you’re the only person for miles.  The Staff & Service What truly elevates the experience is the staff. They are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet—genuinely warm, attentive, and they often remember your name after the very first day. Whether it's the guides leading you through the canyon or the team at the restaurant, there is a sincere sense of hospitality that makes you feel like a guest in a home rather than a number in a hotel.  The Perfect Family "Reset" For a family vacation, it strikes the perfect balance between high-energy adventure and deep relaxation. • For the active side: The ziplining through the white-rock canyon and white-water tubing are world-class and thrilling enough for teenagers and adults alike.  • For the relaxation side: Between the cliffside yoga pods, the volcanic mud treatments at the spa, and the multiple thermal pools, it’s impossible not to relax.  It is the rare kind of place that actually delivers on the promise of tranquility. If you need a break from the daily grind to just be present with your family, Rio Perdido is a sanctuary."

"This hotel was one of the highlights of our trip, and we would absolutely recommend it to friends. We opted to spend a bit more on the newer West Villas, which were excellent—modern, private, and very comfortable. I agree with many of the other reviews: the main lodge is beautiful, the restaurant offered some of the best food we had during our trip, and the multiple pools were all unique and enjoyable. We did the zipline adventure, which was outstanding and a true highlight. We also tried the tubing experience, which unfortunately ended up being a low point—not due to the hotel, but because of the time of year. During the dry season, the water levels are quite low and slow-moving, so much of the time is spent getting stuck and waiting for guides to push the tubes along. We had gone white water rafting the day before, which was a much more exciting and enjoyable experience. If you’re visiting during the dry season, I’d recommend skipping the tubing and prioritizing rafting instead. Overall, our stay at Rio Perdido was fantastic, and we wouldn’t hesitate to return."

"Rio Perdido was one of the most special places I have ever vacationed. The thermal river was absolutely amazing. We hiked down a beautiful canyon to get to the river and it was honestly 100° at the mouth of it. We sat on the bottom of the river against rocks and it felt like a whirlpool. The thermal pools were also wonderful, and I truly appreciated the design of the entire layout as it was immersed in nature and was so peaceful. One morning, I attended a complementary yoga class and my walk from our Casita located in the forest jungle across the hanging bridge into the beautiful facility had already put me in a Yoga state of mind. Additionally, the hiking was challenging and really fun and very well marked. We took a Mixology class and a stargazing night adventure which were both so much fun as well as interesting. The staff were kind and friendly, it was an absolute perfect vacation."
