PB hotel design editorial

Pressed into a forested hillside above Playa Conchal on Costa Rica's Guanacaste coast, where dry tropical woodland gives way to a pale crescent of crushed shell beach, the W Costa Rica Reserva Conchal sits within one of Central America's more ambitious private resort communities — a 2,300-acre development that has spent two decades calibrating the tension between ecological preservation and resort-scale ambition. The aerial view confirms the balance: dense canopy swallows the property on three sides, with a mangrove-edged estuary marking the boundary between the forest and the Pacific. Interiors carry the W brand's signature high-contrast energy, here translated into materials drawn from the surrounding landscape — warm teak used for the sweeping curved headboard screens that arc around the beds like the ribs of a boat hull, limestone tile floors in a pale honey tone, and upholstery in teal, coral, and saffron that mirrors the chromatic intensity of the coast. The restaurant pavilion is the most architecturally resolved space visible in the images: branching hardwood columns flare outward to support a vaulted bamboo ceiling, pendant lights in amber blown glass suspended between them, the whole structure opening onto uninterrupted jungle and sea views without a wall in sight. The wet-edge pool terrace, framed by teak-slatted pergolas and planted with native grasses, brings the same disciplined informality to the outdoor sequence — teak loungers, stone paving, and the W logotype catching the Guanacaste afternoon light.

"Stayed here for 2 nights on points . Hotel is pretty secluded! Check in was smooth and pretty communicative prior to visit. Appreciative of the cake and sparkling wine to share my gf’s birthday! Breakfast and the schedule of events are nice! Rooms are a bit outdated. Did find that the USBs near the bed were broken. Shared feedback. Nice that the hotel manager personally apologized for that and willing to fix. Though gesture is nice…still felt very laxed..and not very on top of things as I had to reach out on status. Only fixed one of the 2 USB’s. Manager did promise points post stay but still have not received it. Overall would stay here on points…won’t stay here if paying for cash"

"Fantastic location, and the hotel is great. The Sunset Tree House Room was great, spacious, quiet and with a great view. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The hotel breakfast was great, with a lot of choice. The hotel is great since there's a pool as well as direct access to the beach. The beach is not crowded and is clean. There were some restaurants on site, they were ok, and a good travel company in the lobby to schedule some excursions and trips. You can really tell the hotel is located in a natural reserve.. Walking in the hotel grounds we came across iguanas, monkeys, deer and all."

"We stayed here in early March for 5 nights using a good chase sapphire points offer as a birthday trip for my husband. We had stayed previously at the W Punta Mita and it looked a little similar in photos. We’ve already done a more adventurous Costa Rica trip so a beach resort this time seemed fine. And it was… fine. If it’s your first time to CR I would definitely consider adding on another location like La Fortuna/Arenal. Especially if you have kids or really if you want anything other than pure resort vacation. Dry surroundings- March is the middle/end of the dry season which is great because no rain, but the view is pretty brown and crispy. I think we would have enjoyed a greener landscape at a different time of year. Beach: Very good and huge swimmable beach. There are little jellyfish and I got stung but it was teensy and only stung for a few minutes. Pools: Two nice pools, one adult pool up high, one down at the beach that was really great. Cabanas are 200$ a day and mostly seem to go unused. That kind of sucked because they had the best shade and I’m not looking to fry myself. Tower buildings: This is a pretty big resort with at least 3 four story buildings of rooms. There was a convention or something with a ton of somewhat loud people who took over the adult pool daily. I guess the hotel is big enough for that. We preferred the much smaller W Punta Mita and its spread out rooms- much more serene. The view here was good though since you’re up high. Food: Pretty meh. We had the free breakfast buffet and most of it was fairly bland. Restaurants were ok, also bland. We were comparing to W Punta Mita which has an exceptional restaurant onsite though. The pool menus are in desperate need of things like a veggie and hummus and/or fruit plate. The service was very good at all venues. Excursions: We did the sailing trip through the resort- really good. The rest weren’t appealing to us- horseback riding and ATVs. Note that you’re really really far from the fun activities in the La Fortuna area like zip lining and other cool nature stuff. We took a shuttle (30pp) to Tamarindo and regretted it- tourist trap. Gym: As with so many resorts, too small and not enough stuff. Needs more treadmills and less bikes/ellipticals. And more benches. No one needs a boxing bag. I’m glad we went but our next CR trip will be to another region with more to do."

"Absolutely Stunning Beachfront Hotel with Amazing Restaurants and Kind Staff! Our trip to Costa Rica was completely last minute- we booked our stay at The W Reserva Conchal just 3 days before arrival. We had never been to Costa Rica before, and all we knew was that we wanted a beautiful beachfront hotel. Because, we've stayed at Westin properties in the past, we trusted the Bonvoy Brand Hotel, but this resort went far beyond anything we expected. The beachfront was absolutely stunning. We swam in the ocean almost every day and the hotel provided beach chairs, umbrellas, and full food and drink service right on the beach. It truly felt effortless and relaxing. The pools were gorgeous, clean and overlooked the beach. The cabanas were a wonderful bonus- available at no charge as long as they were not being used. We also loved that the pools are open 24 hours a day, not that we needed it, but it was nice knowing we could take a late night swim if we wanted. There are 3 restaurants on site, and every single one was excellent, and tasted like special cuisine. Each restaurant offered a standard menu plus themed specials on select nights, which made dining exciting and different throughout our stay. But what truly made this resort exceptional wasn't just the food, the beach, or the beautiful property- it was the people/staff! I have never experienced such genuine kindness and hospitality. Every staff member treated us with the warmth, patience, and open arms. The level of service was beyond impressive- it was heartfelt! The on-site tour company was also incredible. They arranged jet ski rides, ATV adventures and an unforgettable excursion to Arenal Volcano that included a boat ride, hiking, hot springs, and both lunch and dinner. Everything was seamless and perfectly organized. I have to give a special shout out to the following tour staff who did an amazing job: Kenneth, Keilin, Jonathan, Emmanuel. And if you're lucky and get Marco as your Volcano tour guide, you're getting a true gem! I truly cannot say enough about our experience. This trip exceeded our expectations in every way, and we cannot wait to return! Westin, you absolutely outdid yourselves. Not just with your accommodations, and dining, but with your INCREDIBLE STAFF!!! While I don't recall all names, I'd like to give a special shout out Idia, Aaron, Geovanni, Edwin, Roberto, Jose, Dariem & best mixologist Fabian. From the bottom of my heart thank you, you made our stay one that we'll never forget and truly lived up to your slogan "Pura Vida!" Eternally grateful from Homero & Josie!"

"The last leg of our Costa Rica trip was planned for rest and recovery afyer days of hikes and activities. With just an hour and half to LIR airport, it should have been the perfect ending. Forecast sunny and hot the whole stay. Well, the best laid plans as they say don’t always work out. There is a huge roofing company convention. The people are here entertaining their customers. The hotel has basically been taken over by some very rude drunk people. Not all, not most, but enough to make a very negative impact on those that have paid top dollar to be here. Shame on the sales department for saying, ‘ let them do whatever they want’. This is a beautiful property, lovely staff and facilities and should have been such a perfect stay. The pool was closed our first day, then taken over by a lunch crowd the next day and the following when they all returned from excursions. I’m posting just one photo so you get the sense of how this place was taken down 2 stars."
