PB hotel design editorial

High in the Talamanca foothills above Pérez Zeledón, where cloud forest gives way to working coffee and sugarcane plantations, Hacienda AltaGracia was developed by Auberge Resorts Collection on land that carries genuine agricultural history — the name itself signals the hacienda typology the property draws from, low-slung terracotta-roofed pavilions dispersed across rolling terrain rather than concentrated into a single resort block. The entrance sequence makes the ambition clear: a tiered stone fountain, brick-paved drives edged with hydrangeas, and clipped hedges terracing the hillside in a manner closer to a private Central American estate than a managed resort. Fifty casitas spread across the property's considerable acreage, each positioned to borrow mountain views through floor-to-ceiling glazed walls framed in dark-stained timber. The interiors, refreshed under Auberge's ownership, balance colonial craft references with a cleaner contemporary hand. Four-poster beds hung with linen canopies anchor each room, paired with flat-weave kilim-style rugs in indigo and sand, leather campaign stools, and turned-wood bedside lamps in sculptural organic forms. Teak ceiling planks and ceiling fans maintain the plantation register without tipping into pastiche. The restaurant brings the most theatrical gesture: woven fiber pendant lights, their forms somewhere between bird's nest and sea urchin, suspended above polished concrete floors and dark timber wishbone chairs, with a living plant wall dividing the dining room and expressionist canvas paintings adding saturated color to an otherwise warm, neutral interior.

Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

"My husband and I recently spent a week at Hacienda AltaGracia celebrating his 75th birthday, and I can honestly say it was one of the finest travel experiences we've ever had. The property is breathtaking, but what truly sets AltaGracia apart is its people. Every person we encountered—from our compas working behind the scenes to the housekeeping staff, restaurant servers, bartenders, guides, and spa team—made us feel genuinely welcome. Their warmth, kindness, and pride in sharing their country created an atmosphere unlike any other resort we've visited. We stayed in a two-bedroom casita with a private pool, which became our own peaceful retreat. Every evening we returned to thoughtful touches that made the casita feel like home: soft lighting, a cozy fire, and even a hot water bottle tucked into our bed. It was impossible not to feel cared for. The culinary experience was exceptional. Every meal celebrated the flavors of Costa Rica, and the staff enthusiastically shared the stories behind local ingredients, preparations, and traditions. Our bartender introduced us to creative cocktails featuring local fruits like star fruit and golden berries, making each visit an opportunity to discover something new. The highlight of our stay was a private chef's dinner on the patio of our casita for my husband's birthday. It exceeded every expectation. The beautifully prepared meal, wine pairings, live musician, and impeccable service created an evening we'll remember for the rest of our lives. We also enjoyed a surf day (a dream come true for my husband, a lifelong surfer), bird watching, a nighttime wildlife hike, horseback riding, spa treatments, and the River Bath experience. Every activity was expertly organized and seamlessly coordinated. Before we even arrived, the staff worked with us to personalize our stay, and every request was handled with enthusiasm and care. We felt that everyone genuinely wanted our celebration to be as special as we hoped it would be. Finally, our sincere thanks to our travel advisor, Camila Zevallos at Classic Travel, for recommending Hacienda AltaGracia. It was the perfect destination for this milestone celebration. If you're looking for a place where luxury is measured not only by beautiful accommodations and outstanding cuisine, but by authentic hospitality and extraordinary people, Hacienda AltaGracia is truly something special. We left with unforgettable memories, grateful hearts, and every hope that we'll return one day. ¡Pura Vida!"

"Our stay at Hacienda AltaGracia exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by breathtaking scenery, exceptional service, and unforgettable experiences. The property itself is absolutely stunning, with gorgeous mountain views in every direction. Our private plunge pool was one of our favorite features—it easily converted into a warm jacuzzi each evening, making it the perfect place to relax while taking in the incredible scenery. The outdoor swing on our terrace was another favorite spot to unwind. The staff truly made this resort special. Every team member was warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making our stay perfect. The wait staff provided outstanding service at every meal, and the adventure guides were knowledgeable, professional, and passionate about sharing Costa Rica's incredible natural beauty. There was no shortage of amazing activities. We especially loved the nocturnal nature hike, where we experienced the rainforest after dark, the exhilarating ficus tree climb, the peaceful river bath, the world-class spa, and the beautiful waterfall hike. Horseback riding through the mountains with breathtaking panoramic views was another unforgettable experience, and the horse show was a wonderful surprise that showcased the resort's exceptional equestrian program. A true highlight of our trip was visiting Marvin's Cocoa Farm. Learning about the cacao-growing process, meeting Marvin and his family, and experiencing such an authentic part of Costa Rican culture made for one of the most memorable experiences of our stay. The weather was absolutely perfect during our visit, allowing us to enjoy every outdoor experience comfortably. Hacienda AltaGracia offers the perfect balance of luxury, adventure, wellness, and authentic Costa Rican hospitality. It is one of the most beautiful and memorable places we have ever visited, and we cannot wait to return."

"Our vacation at Hacienda AltaGracia Auberge was my favorite family vacation we've taken yet! We loved the plane ride over the mountains and vintage jeeps that greet you and drive you up to the main property. We were greeted and shown our beautiful room that included a play tent and amenities just for our 1 and 4 year old children. The food was excellent and we felt great because there are so many healthy options. We enjoyed getting coffee and treats from Mercado throughout the day and we spent time at the pool, explored the trails and incredible butterfly garden, and enjoyed the culinary classes. We were amazed that this resort caters so thoughtfully to both families with small children and adult couples - there are spaces for each and truly something for everyone. Cannot wait to return!"

"We just returned from a wonderful stay at Hacienda AltaGracia with our 2.5- and 4-year-old boys. Before arriving, I was a little nervous that the property might feel too adult-focused, but it ended up being one of the most family-friendly luxury resorts we’ve visited. The setting is spectacular, and our boys loved exploring the property, hiking the trails, spotting animals, swimming, and simply having space to run around. We initially booked both the trapiche farm adventure and the cacao tour, but after doing the farm experience (which was fantastic for young children), we actually canceled the cacao tour so we could spend more time enjoying the property itself. There was far more to do than we expected. A couple of notes for families with young children: * If baths are important for your kids, pay attention to room selection. Our casita did not have a bathtub, which wasn’t a problem for us but may matter for some families. * We stayed in a one-bedroom casita with the kids sleeping in the living room. While the setup worked well overall, the living room did not have blackout shades, so early mornings could be challenging for light-sensitive sleepers. Overall, AltaGracia exceeded our expectations as a family destination. The combination of luxury, nature, outdoor activities, and the incredibly warm staff made for a truly memorable stay. We wouldn’t hesitate to return with young kids. We also loved the low season visit - the weather was beautiful in the morning and would get stormy by evenings, but made for mostly empty hotel amenities (where we didn’t have to worry about kids being kids) and lots of cozy moments by the fire as we ended our days."

"We arrived with very high expectations for this trip, and somehow every aspect of our stay exceeded them. Every excursion was thoughtfully curated, and the guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled at personalizing each experience to make it feel special and meaningful. The resort itinerary offered an incredible balance of adventure, relaxation, restoration, and education. The cacao and coffee sessions were especially memorable; we left with a much deeper appreciation for these products, along with practical knowledge about how to select and enjoy them once we returned home. The ritual at Casa de Agua was the perfect complement to days filled with hiking and exploration. It left us feeling completely renewed, with relaxed minds and glowing skin. The culinary experience was exceptional from start to finish. The attention to detail in every dish was impeccable, and the quality of the ingredients truly shined through. The food felt authentic to the region while maintaining a strong focus on wellness and nourishment. The desserts were creative and delicious, and the horse show dinner was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip-absolutely unforgettable. WOW. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who made our stay so special. The warmth, care, and dedication of the entire team created memories we will cherish forever. It was truly a magical experience, and we cannot wait to return."
