PB hotel design editorial

High in the Talamanca foothills above Pérez Zeledón, where cloud forest gives way to working coffee and sugarcane plantations, Hacienda AltaGracia was developed by Auberge Resorts Collection on land that carries genuine agricultural history — the name itself signals the hacienda typology the property draws from, low-slung terracotta-roofed pavilions dispersed across rolling terrain rather than concentrated into a single resort block. The entrance sequence makes the ambition clear: a tiered stone fountain, brick-paved drives edged with hydrangeas, and clipped hedges terracing the hillside in a manner closer to a private Central American estate than a managed resort. Fifty casitas spread across the property's considerable acreage, each positioned to borrow mountain views through floor-to-ceiling glazed walls framed in dark-stained timber. The interiors, refreshed under Auberge's ownership, balance colonial craft references with a cleaner contemporary hand. Four-poster beds hung with linen canopies anchor each room, paired with flat-weave kilim-style rugs in indigo and sand, leather campaign stools, and turned-wood bedside lamps in sculptural organic forms. Teak ceiling planks and ceiling fans maintain the plantation register without tipping into pastiche. The restaurant brings the most theatrical gesture: woven fiber pendant lights, their forms somewhere between bird's nest and sea urchin, suspended above polished concrete floors and dark timber wishbone chairs, with a living plant wall dividing the dining room and expressionist canvas paintings adding saturated color to an otherwise warm, neutral interior.

Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

"The property is charming with a wide range of experiences and great hiking trails. Not many surprises but everything feels perfectly managed. The compa replied to our message on WhatsApp really fast and satisfied almost whatever we need. And since we are traveling in may and it is not the high season, we are the only one there in most of the public experiences and the shared charter between SJO and the hotel. The only thing they may need to improve is the food. For people expecting exotic experiences it can be perfect but it might be little tough for those from east Asia who just want flavors they are familiar to. Maybe they should consider adding more options while keeping the current ones. Another small complaint is that they didn’t ask what sugar level I wanted before making my coffee, so for everyone who’s going and don’t want much sugar you have to remember mentioning it yourself. Oh and I have to say the pineapples are so good. We had a unique and wonderful experience with sapoa adventure named the quest for quetzals. Our guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. And to increase the chance of finding the quetzals, we have 2 more guys looking for them before we depart from the hotel. We ended up seeing the chick of the quetzal, which is rare and only visible near May. We had some dishes at the local restaurant featuring the rainbow trouts for lunch before getting back to the hotel and we loved it."

"Everything is perfect. Attention to detail, gracious and happy hosts, incredible spa and activities and great food. Oh…and the casitas are amazing! The plunge pool and the hanging day bed, it’s all spectacular!"

"This place is incredible. A resort that sprawls over an entire side of a mountain -- the resort itself is stunning and well manicured, and it also has miles and miles of trails through the jungle that are also incredible. It felt like a national park right there on the property. Food was delicious, locally sourced from area farms. The coffee lover in me was in heaven -- local beans, a variety of brew methods, and knowledgable baristas that know coffee and the local farms better than 99.5% of the world. This place does a great job giving you everything you could ever want and need -- I highly recommend."

"Our stay at AltaGracia was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we landed at SJO, the process of VIP customs, charter plane and the arrival at the resort were all effortless. The resort is gorgeous and has a plethora of activities to indulge in, which made our stay so special. However, the one thing that sticks out most from our stay is the level of service. We have traveled extensively around the world and we have never experienced a level of service like AltaGracia. Their attention to detail and above-and - beyond nature not only made us feel like royalty but made our experience one of a kind. It would be a dream to have the opportunity to return!"

"Unbelievable opportunity to stay in one of the most remote and beautiful hotel experiences in the world. Come for the first class service and luxury but come back for the people. I've never felt more at ease while being doted on hand and foot. The food was an experience and an education. We enjoyed the activities, we enjoyed the facilities and we enjoyed a walk in the rainforrest. Absolutely first rate experience."
