PB hotel design editorial

Facing Parque Central on Avenida Central, the neoclassical white stucco building that houses Gran Hotel Costa Rica has anchored downtown San José's social life since 1930, its arcaded ground floor and wrought-iron balustrades long serving as the architectural backdrop to the city's public square. The conversion into a Curio Collection by Hilton property brought a bold structural addition: a glazed penthouse volume set atop the original four-storey facade, its curtain-wall geometry making no attempt to mimic the heritage masonry below — a candid dialogue between eras that, from street level at dusk, glows like a lantern above the white plinth. Inside, the design strategy shifts between registers with considerable confidence. Guest rooms work a palette of blonde wood cladding, cream leather headboards, and softly patterned carpets in sage and grey — white Saarinen-style tulip tables and bentwood chairs lending a mid-century domesticity to spaces whose original gridded sash windows still filter the canopy green of the park outside. The rooftop restaurant carries encaustic cement tiles in amber and terracotta across its floor, grounding a room otherwise defined by floor-to-ceiling glass and panoramic views toward the central valley mountains. The adjacent bar anchors its drama in black marble flooring, gold-fluted column screens, and a Yamaha grand piano positioned where every guest arriving from the elevator encounters it first — a choice that declares the hotel's ambitions more clearly than any lobby statement wall ever could.

"The hotel is beautiful from the moment you arrive. The details and staff are top notch and being a Hilton property makes it even better. The restaurants were great and a wonderful house keeping team."

"I do not normally write reviews, however the service level of one of the employees at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica was so far and above what I am use to recieving that I wanted to call out in particular his dedication. Beyond all of the regular services that you would expect from a Front Desk, he was able to get me reservations all around San José. Constantly keeping track of the various options, and what times might be available that would meet my schedule. Daniel Vargas is a superior employee and The Gran Hotel is lucky to have him."

"We look forward to coming to San Jose every few months and staying at the Gran Hotel. You always feel special being greeted by Luiz and his staff. Centrally located, it is a joy to walk and experience San Jose. The breakfast is wonderful and staff very helpful, especially Oscar! Looking forward to a return later in the year!"

"The Gran Hotel is very nice and wonderfully located if you want to be in the hustle and bustle of downtown. The National Theatre tour was fun - lead by actors who roleplay historic characters while showing you the beautiful building. There was also lots of good people watching as this hotel is on the main town plaza where lots of folks visit on the weekend. The restaurant had very good food and mostly great service. One thing that seemed common in Costa Rica is that it takes a very long time to get your check once you've finished eating. Read the prices carefully and do your currency conversion diligently as we accidentally paid $120 for what we thought was an appetizer of shrimp! This was our own fault, though. The breakfast buffet was very, very nice and I was happy to be brought gluten-free bread without even asking! The room was comfortable and very quiet. The biggest 'warning' I want people to know about is that there is no separate bathroom in the room. Instead, the shower and toilet are each enclosed by frosted, but still transparent glass. There is also a wall of mirrors across from that area, so there is literally NO where in the room that you can not be seen from anywhere else in the room. If you are alone, or traveling with your partner it's probably fine (although still awkward at times...lol), but if you were with a friend, other family member or colleague, it could be very uncomfortable depending on your level of modesty. (see pictures). We had a friends/family rate so felt good about our stay here, and the Uber ride to the airport cost about $15. The hotel can also arrange a shuttle for $45. Traffic is crazy in San Jose, so allow plenty of time. One other small caveat is that their website lists a business center, but there is not one. They will print things that you email to the front desk, though. There is a gymnasium, but no pool or hot tub. The general lobby seating areas are very nice."
