PB hotel design editorial

Playa Santa Teresa, on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, spent decades as a surf outpost before serious hospitality arrived — and when Hotel Nantipa opened here, the design challenge was obvious: how do you build something considered without suffocating the wildness that makes the place worth visiting. The answer, visible throughout the property, was to keep the jungle and the sand as the primary architecture. Thatched palapa roofs on the open-air restaurant shelter a space where blackened steel chairs, raw timber columns, and a geometric tile-faced bar sit under woven reed ceilings, the whole structure dissolving at its edges into the beach canopy. String lights laced between almendro trees, low teak coffee tables set directly on the sand, and bean bags arranged on kilim-style rugs give the beach terrace the feeling of a very well-edited private gathering rather than hotel programming. The rooms correct any assumption that informality means compromise. Polished concrete floors, pale limba wood headboards, textured microcement feature walls, and cobalt linen cushions establish a palette that is clean without being cold. Corner suites push floor-to-ceiling black-framed glazing toward the treeline, rattan armchairs positioned to catch the Pacific light filtering through the canopy. The freeform pool, edged in travertine and surrounded by coconut palms, holds the garden between the accommodation blocks and the shore. Throughout Nantipa, the instinct is consistent — let the landscape carry the weight, and furnish just precisely enough to make people stay.

About

Nantipa is located in the heart of Santa Teresa, a Costa Rican authentic beach town with its own unique culture and style. Many define Santa Teresa as the new home for Barefoot Luxury, combining World Class surfing conditions, great yoga studios and instructors, superb cuisine and great nature and parks, all in a relaxed atmosphere that depicts Costa Rica’s Pura Vida lifestyle. Nantipa is found 150 meters south of the main Plaza / School, in a property that spans from the main road to the beach, presenting 155 meters (approximately 450 feet) of beach line. The property is heavily forested and has direct access to two swimming spots – one with natural ocean pools that form in the low tide – and is within close walking distance to the best breaks and waves. Nantipa offers 19 guest bungalows scattered in a 2.3 hectare property with 155 meters of beachfront. Most rooms feature full or partial ocean views, along with garden and pool views. Manzu is the beachfront restaurant, featuring Costa Rican authentic cuisine and spectacular views of the beach, ocean and sunset.

"Nantipa is a lovely property with an amazing design. The rooms and other facilities quietly blend into the sorounding rainforest and beachfront. The rooms are luxurious, spacious and well-appointed with top notch amenities. Little things like a rack to neatly dry your clothes or towels following a plunge in your private plunge pool make a huge difference. Even the way in-room coffee is made using a tradiitonal Costa Rican method is unique and well thought of. Harry, the Director General, is on call all day and all night gifting his welcoming smile to all guests. So is his lovely black and white dog who is a rather friendly host too! The rest of the staff is very helpful, attentive and knowledgeable. You are never to connected but never disconnected as they give you the option of using Whatsapp in case you need anything. The Mantú restaurant serves world class food in a tropical, relaxed, atmosphere. The sunrise and sunset views at Mantú are worth every minute. Our stay involved a special occasion private party which was magnificent. Over one hundred guests enjoyed an unforgettable evening with excellent food and drinks. Service was truly impeccable. There are many dining and entertainment options within walking distance in case you do not want to spend all the time in the hotel. There are also Yoga lessons and Spa facilities in the property. I was very impressed with this hotel and would recommend it to anyone seeking a non-pretentious luxury getaway in the tropical rainforest and its beaches."

"From the moment we arrived, Nantipa exceeded every expectation. The property is absolutely stunning, beautifully designed, surrounded by lush tropical gardens, and just steps from one of the most breathtaking beach breaks in Costa Rica. Every detail feels thoughtfully curated, creating a peaceful and luxurious atmosphere while maintaining the warmth of authentic Costa Rican hospitality. As a family traveling with two young children, we especially appreciated how welcoming and comfortable Nantipa is for families. The spacious accommodations, attentive staff, and relaxed atmosphere made us feel completely at ease. It offers the perfect balance of luxury and comfort for both adults and children. For tired parents, it’s the perfect place to decompress, and completely forget about chores for a while. The restaurant was another highlight. The food was delicious, with an excellent variety of dishes, attentive service, and the perfect beachfront setting. Enjoying breakfast or dinner while listening to the sound of the waves is an experience we will never forget. What truly sets Nantipa apart, however, is its people. Every member of the team made us feel genuinely welcome. The management’s genuine care for his guests perfectly reflects the spirit of this hotel. We left with beautiful memories and hope to return in pur next summer holidays. Nantipa is not simply a wonderful hotel; it is a place where you truly feel at home. Highly recommended."

"My wife and I did 5 days of our honeymoon in Santa Teresa and stayed at Hotel Nantipa. We had a rough start as there were a number of insects in our mantil bungalow upon our arrival. We believe that the cleaning staff left our room open when cleaning our room prior to our arrival. We quickly got the issue resolved and communicated with the front desk and staff to not leave our door open when cleaning and we did not have issues the rest of the way. I would expect a couple of bugs to sneak into your room over the course of your stay. It was disappointing and an uncomfortable welcome to kickoff our honeymoon but the issue got resolved. Despite the bugs we were welcomed with a sweet and thoughtful honeymoon gift and treat. I would like to thank Andrey and Carla for helping us resolve our critter issues. Andrey was always great and helpful throughout our stay. We appreciated him greatly. As for hotel nantipa and no more bugs, we had an incredible stay. We enjoyed the quiet and intimate feel of Nantipa despite being beachfront and right off the main road. It is in a central location to both walk up and down the beach and walk or drive/ATV to local restaurants on the main road. Our room came with a private plunge pool which was we used a few times, the temperature is friendly and it is peaceful. We enjoyed the hotel pool almost everyday after we would get off the beach. It is quiet, relaxing and nice with all the trees next to it. There was always someone there for poolside service for food and drinks. As for the beach it is just steps from your room. It is a beautiful beach with warmer temps. We enjoyed swimming in the shallower ends as you have to be careful of strong currents and riptides that were present each day. We had no issues be just check the flags prior to going out each day, there was a lifeguard just a few yards down the beach. We enjoyed breakfast every morning at manzu and it never disappointed. Our service was great, shoutout to Salvador for always providing great service. I would recommend getting the breakfast add-on when booking, it just made things easier and it is good food and a beautiful view to start each morning. We did not have a chance to do yoga or the spa, we spent more time exploring the charming and lively town of Santa Teresa and unwinding at Manzu beach club. The rooms were clean (despite our bug problem) the daily service included turndown and the beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was big and functional as well as the outdoor shower. The lush vegetation, beach, incredible sunsets and laid back vibe feel truly captures the Costa Rican lifestyle, pura vida. I would strongly recommend booking your next stay at Hotel Nantipa! We will be back."

"The location, the staff, our room, the food was amazing. Yohn and Pricila at the restaurant were on top of it and just so delightful. We were able to eat out on the beach, if we preferred, or in the open air restaurant. The food was phenomenal. We enjoyed the location as it was right on the beach and on the main street in Santa Theresa. They had a beautiful pool, as well. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!"
