PB hotel design editorial

Playa Santa Teresa, on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, spent decades as a surf outpost before serious hospitality arrived — and when Hotel Nantipa opened here, the design challenge was obvious: how do you build something considered without suffocating the wildness that makes the place worth visiting. The answer, visible throughout the property, was to keep the jungle and the sand as the primary architecture. Thatched palapa roofs on the open-air restaurant shelter a space where blackened steel chairs, raw timber columns, and a geometric tile-faced bar sit under woven reed ceilings, the whole structure dissolving at its edges into the beach canopy. String lights laced between almendro trees, low teak coffee tables set directly on the sand, and bean bags arranged on kilim-style rugs give the beach terrace the feeling of a very well-edited private gathering rather than hotel programming. The rooms correct any assumption that informality means compromise. Polished concrete floors, pale limba wood headboards, textured microcement feature walls, and cobalt linen cushions establish a palette that is clean without being cold. Corner suites push floor-to-ceiling black-framed glazing toward the treeline, rattan armchairs positioned to catch the Pacific light filtering through the canopy. The freeform pool, edged in travertine and surrounded by coconut palms, holds the garden between the accommodation blocks and the shore. Throughout Nantipa, the instinct is consistent — let the landscape carry the weight, and furnish just precisely enough to make people stay.

About

Nantipa is located in the heart of Santa Teresa, a Costa Rican authentic beach town with its own unique culture and style. Many define Santa Teresa as the new home for Barefoot Luxury, combining World Class surfing conditions, great yoga studios and instructors, superb cuisine and great nature and parks, all in a relaxed atmosphere that depicts Costa Rica’s Pura Vida lifestyle. Nantipa is found 150 meters south of the main Plaza / School, in a property that spans from the main road to the beach, presenting 155 meters (approximately 450 feet) of beach line. The property is heavily forested and has direct access to two swimming spots – one with natural ocean pools that form in the low tide – and is within close walking distance to the best breaks and waves. Nantipa offers 19 guest bungalows scattered in a 2.3 hectare property with 155 meters of beachfront. Most rooms feature full or partial ocean views, along with garden and pool views. Manzu is the beachfront restaurant, featuring Costa Rican authentic cuisine and spectacular views of the beach, ocean and sunset.

"Incredible experience! Beaches were perfect and we had a villa on the ocean and would highly recommend that! 25th wedding anniversary was perfect!"

"I had a very disappointing experience at Nantipa due to their confusing and inconsistent visitor/guest policies. The rules were not clearly explained at check-in, and nowhere in the paperwork did it clearly state that you cannot have different visitors come to your room. The only thing mentioned was room capacity, which is not the same as saying no visitors are allowed. What made it worse was the night staff. They were rude, confusing, and made the situation unnecessarily uncomfortable. Instead of calmly explaining the policy, they acted accusatory and unprofessional. To make matters worse, different staff members gave different answers, and it was clear the team is not on the same page. This created stress during what should have been a relaxing stay. For the price and reputation, this level of communication and hospitality is unacceptable. I would not stay here again. I suggest if your social at all do not stay here because even if you just bring back one person and the other person is no longer staying in your room, they will be mean about it Also, I’ve never heard of a hotel where you can’t bring someone too, especially if it’s just for a night not even using the facilities They also claimed it was an insurance policy, which also doesn’t make sense because I’ve literally seen other people that are not staying at the hotel come into the hotel and use the actual facilities like the pool In addition, I never even signed the document that explains this so I don’t know how that’s even enforceable again. It only says about capacity not that you can’t change the people out at all. There’s also no manager at staff on night so that was very difficult because the girl at the front desk explained it a lot different than the manager did in the morning and they had conflicting reasons why so that doesn’t make sense"

"My husband and I stayed at Nantipa for 6 nights and I cannot wait to go back. The stay included breakfast at their Manzú restaurant each day which offered multiple healthy, filling and delicious choices. We also had an excellent dinner with unique cocktails during our stay. The Ninta Beachfront Bungalow offers ocean views from the the bed and a large plunge pool. It was a very relaxing way to spend time after jumping in the ocean. The bed was very comfortable and the AC rooms stayed nice and cool. They have bug spray in the room for your use that smells nice and works well. There is a mini fridge with some buy options but also plenty of space to add any drinks you might purchase in town. There are walkable restaurants and shops nearby where you can find casual choices. We also worked with the concierge, Anthony, to book a surfing lesson. It was very fun but difficult. Worth at least trying if you have time. Anthony also went above and beyond with a large gift for us during our stay including fresh fruit (mango is amazing here), cookies and chocolate! The hotel also offers house keeping 2× a day with turndown including a chocolate and fresh flowers each day. There is no gym but since this is a wellness resort the focus is on classes like yoga/pilates. They offer a complimentary 7am yoga which had a different instructor/ flow each day. Well worth booking in advance. The other classes run thru the day with a cost and pre booking as well. If you're looking for luxury and personalized care this is definitely the resort to stay at."
