PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the limestone karst above Miramare Bay, roughly a kilometre west of Dubrovnik's Old Town walls, the building that became Hotel Bellevue commands one of the most geologically dramatic hotel sites on the Adriatic — sheer cliff face dropping to a sheltered pebble cove, with the Elaphiti Islands dissolving into the horizon beyond. The property was substantially rebuilt and reopened in 2008 after a comprehensive renovation, its five-storey contemporary facade stepping across the cliff edge in a horizontal rhythm of glazed balconies that prioritise the sea view as the dominant interior experience across all 91 rooms and suites. The interiors navigate a palette of pale ash, warm taupe, and chalk white that mirrors the bleached limestone and Adriatic light outside rather than competing with it. Guest rooms deploy patterned headboard panels — one category features a sculptural white bookshelf wall as its defining element, another a large-scale geometric textile — alongside wide-plank timber floors, Eames-era desk chairs in white, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the water as a living artwork. The all-day dining room is furnished with Gubi Beetle chairs in dove grey beneath flat rattan pendant shades, tall areca palms breaking the space into smaller clusters. On the upper terrace restaurant, white caged table lamps by Foscarini anchor the dining layout against a panorama stretching south toward Cavtat — the kind of view that makes architectural restraint not a compromise but the only honest response.

"The Bellevue hotel Dubrovnik Fantastic hotel and lives up to its small luxury hotels in the world My wife and I have been to a few including Asante in Zante Greece These hotels do not come close to the Bellevue It has all the quality a proper 5 star hotel should have plus set in a cove with superb sea views The fine dining restaurant Vapor is absolutely outstanding and I have not seen one to match yet 10/10 does not do this hotel justice Do not hesitate to visit World travellers Liz and John payne"

"Fantastic location for the old town. Would recommend the short walk in and then getting the bus back though! The tasting menu was amazing and the wine selection that went with it was first class. Breakfast superb too. Staff all great - always smiling, attentive and wanting to help. Also helped to organise a meal out for our final night which topped it all off. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for! Would love to visit again."

"Having spent some time researching options for Dubrovnik we selected this hotel and suggest you do too. Marvellous location a 12 min walk or 5 min bus from the old city. Our room was exceptional - as was the suite we enjoyed for our last nights. The facilities are excellent although given the lovely weather and various things we had planned we didn’t get to try the spa (we might try next time!). The breakfast is superb as is the view from the terrace. The beach area is great fun - especially watching kids cliff jumping!! The main restaurant is wonderful. Every dish was tremendous as was the wine. However the differentiating factor is the staff. Without exception they were friendly, accommodating and could not do enough to make ones visit a pleasure. We travel a lot and have had no hesitation recommending to friends and family."

"What first strikes you about Hotel Bellevue (a Small Luxury Hotel) is its striking post-war architecture—a style from an era when Croatia was just starting to soar into the European tourism giant it is today. However, when you are paying roughly €1,000+ a night, the real question isn't about the architecture; it’s about value for money. Unfortunately, for our stay, the value just wasn't there. (Note: I didn't raise these points with the staff during our stay, as most of our issues were systemic and not things the front desk could easily fix on the spot.) Here is a breakdown of our experience: 🍳 Breakfast & Dining - The Cost:** Breakfast was not included and cost an extra **€30 per person**. - The Quality:** For that price point, the assortment, food quality, and service felt quite weak. To put it in perspective, I’ve had much better breakfasts in Scandinavia at hotels costing €200 a night. - The Silver Lining:** I have to give credit where it's due—the breakfast omelette was absolutely fantastic! It was easily the best omelette I had all summer. - The Wine Bar & Restaurant:** We were given a €30 per person voucher for the wine bar, but it was strictly valid for drinks only (excluding snacks or ice cream). We didn't end up using the full amount because the noise level from the live acoustic guitarists in the adjacent "Flagstaff" restaurant was so loud it was impossible to hold a conversation or enjoy the World Cup match playing nearby. 🛏️ The Junior Suite with Balcony - The Decor:** The room felt stuck in a time warp. Aside from the TV, it felt like the interior hadn't been upgraded in about 15 to 20 years, carrying an ambiguous 90s design aesthetic. - The Vibe:** For a premium suite, we expected modern luxury, but the wear and design felt dated. Service & Highlights - The Standouts:** The beach area was a major highlight! The beach staff were wonderfully welcoming, and one of the housekeeping staff members was incredibly friendly and kind. They truly provided great service. - The Rest of the Hotel:** Outside of the beach team, the overall service and hospitality felt much closer to a standard 3-star hotel than a luxury 5-star establishment. Final Verdict In my opinion, Hotel Bellevue falls short of a true 5-star commitment when it comes to approach, room quality, food, and staff training. It feels much more like a proper, well-located 3-star property. As a general rule of thumb—and as you’ll see in my next review—hotels that feel the need to loudly advertise their five-star status right on the front door often struggle to live up to it."
