PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the limestone karst above Miramare Bay, roughly a kilometre west of Dubrovnik's Old Town walls, the building that became Hotel Bellevue commands one of the most geologically dramatic hotel sites on the Adriatic — sheer cliff face dropping to a sheltered pebble cove, with the Elaphiti Islands dissolving into the horizon beyond. The property was substantially rebuilt and reopened in 2008 after a comprehensive renovation, its five-storey contemporary facade stepping across the cliff edge in a horizontal rhythm of glazed balconies that prioritise the sea view as the dominant interior experience across all 91 rooms and suites. The interiors navigate a palette of pale ash, warm taupe, and chalk white that mirrors the bleached limestone and Adriatic light outside rather than competing with it. Guest rooms deploy patterned headboard panels — one category features a sculptural white bookshelf wall as its defining element, another a large-scale geometric textile — alongside wide-plank timber floors, Eames-era desk chairs in white, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the water as a living artwork. The all-day dining room is furnished with Gubi Beetle chairs in dove grey beneath flat rattan pendant shades, tall areca palms breaking the space into smaller clusters. On the upper terrace restaurant, white caged table lamps by Foscarini anchor the dining layout against a panorama stretching south toward Cavtat — the kind of view that makes architectural restraint not a compromise but the only honest response.

"This hotel is exceptional. Everything about it is wonderful. The excellent breakfast is served by the friendliest staff on a breathtaking terrace overlooking the clear, pure water. The food is exceptional. At night, the bar is staffed by similarly friendly and helpful staff. The reception staff are lovely, so helpful. One managed to locate our lost bag in a taxi within minutes! The room is beautiful and our view was absolutely outstanding, looking down onto the stunning little beach. For our anniversary, we had some lovely special touches that I will never forget - thank you so much Hotel Bellevue! The swimming pool is beautifully clean and peaceful, with towels provided and open to guests for free. It was never over full in May. It is an easy walk down to the old town via a lovely road, here you will smell the beautiful trees of Croatia as you walk. You can walk back up, take a bus or a taxi. If you are going on a day trip, tell reception and they will make you up a lovely breakfast box if you are leaving before breakfast (as we did when we went to Montenegro). Absolutely a five star hotel with a million star service, I would stay there again in a heartbeat. Croatia has my heart and Bellevue is very much a part of that."

"We had a wonderful week here, in a superior sea view room with balcony. Spacious room with plenty of storage, housekeeping were very good and thorough. We ate in the restaurant one evening and had lunch by the beach a couple of times - all food was excellent, including the extensive breakfast buffet (the bread, honeys and jams were so delicious). We went to the spa a couple of times, which was lovely after a hot day off walking. What made the stay particularly pleasurable was the staff, who really couldn't have done more for us and were all so friendly and chatty. Location was great, nice and quiet away from the town but a pleasant walk to the old town in one direction or to Lapad, Babin Kuk and the port in the other ."

"Spent three nights here recently and had a great time. We walked up from the port having spent time on some of the islands. The views from the hotel are stunning. As you walk into reception you are greeted by an amazing view of the sea. Staff, in particular the housekeeping staff, were really friendly and helpful. We were travelling with our baby and they could not have been nicer to her! We were a few hours early at check-in but our room was ready which was great. The room was fabulous. Loads of space. Bed was very comfortable and we had a travel cot for our baby. Shower was great. The view was stunning and we loved the balcony to sit out on in the evenings when our baby was asleep. Breakfast was fantastic. Loads of choice from a buffet as well as made to order dishes. Everything was super tasty. Again the staff were so accommodating to our little girl. The pool area was nice and our baby loved having her first swims. The beach area was gorgeous....we had a prebreakfast swim each morning. We had lunch in the restaurant on arrival and although the food was lovely it was empty and therefore had zero atmosphere. It seemed pretty empty everything we passed through both in the afternoon and evening but maybe it was due to the time of year we visited. My only tiny negative was the gap between the balcony and the glass barrier which gave me huge anxiety having our baby. Although I don't think she could have fallen fully through it, I do think she could have partially done so and hurt herself. Because of this it was a no go area for her which was a pity as it was a nice place to sit while chilling after doing some sightseeing. Obviously this would be a non issue for most people! Otherwise this is an absolutely fab hotel and we were very sorry to be leaving."

"My three-day stay at Hotel Bellevue in Dubrovnik was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm hospitality and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea that took my breath away. The hotel’s elegant design and cozy atmosphere made it the perfect retreat. Each morning, I enjoyed a delicious breakfast on the terrace while soaking in panoramic vistas of the crystal-clear water and the historic Old Town nearby. The rooms were spacious, impeccably clean, and featured all the modern comforts I could ask for, including a balcony that offered a peaceful spot to unwind. During the days, I explored Dubrovnik’s beautiful surroundings, returning to the hotel’s serene spa and wellness center to relax and recharge. The staff were attentive and always ready with helpful recommendations for local dining and sightseeing. In the evenings, dining at the hotel’s restaurant was a treat. The menu showcased fresh, local ingredients with creative flair, perfectly complemented by a fine selection of Croatian wines. Overall, Hotel Bellevue provided an unforgettable blend of luxury, comfort, and authentic Dubrovnik charm. I look forward to returning for another relaxing escape by the sea."

"Modern hotel located about 15 minute walk to Pile Gate. We booked a suite with large balcony so to see the sea. Room was large, had plenty of storage and was very quite. You could hear the sea at night. We ate at Vapor one night and did the 7-course traditional Croatian dinner with wine pairing - what a delicious feast. Breakfast was also very good. Staff always there to answer questions."
