PB hotel design editorial

Perched directly above the Adriatic on the coastal shelf just east of Dubrovnik's medieval walls, with the limestone battlements of the Old Town framed in every seaward window like a painting someone forgot to remove, the Hotel Excelsior holds what is arguably the most privileged position of any hotel on the Croatian coast. The property dates to 1913 and was substantially rebuilt and modernized over subsequent decades, its current form presenting a clean-lined, white-rendered facade of six floors that steps back from the cliff edge in horizontal bands of glazing — contemporary in posture but careful not to compete with the UNESCO-listed fortifications directly across the water. Interiors follow a measured contemporary idiom: warm oak wall paneling provides the dominant texture in the guestrooms, offset by dusty rose bed throws, navy upholstered lounge chairs with a mid-century profile, and black marble vanity surfaces edged in brass. The palette deliberately echoes the sea outside — blues deepening toward indigo, neutrals pulling toward the bleached stone of the old city. At the Prora Restaurant, set within a ground-level arcade of rough-cut limestone arches that survive from an earlier structure on the site, iron bistro chairs and white linen tables meet water-worn stone in a contrast that no amount of interior design could manufacture. The upper-floor restaurant, fully glazed on three sides, suspends diners between sky, sea, and the walled city in a way that makes the Old Town feel simultaneously distant and close enough to reach.

About

With its prestigious location, just steps from the UNESCO Old City of Dubrovnik, Hotel Excelsior is ready to show its revamped grandeur as one of the most lavish hotels on the Adriatic. Housed in a former 1913 royal villa and built to take full advantage of a west-facing view of the glorious Old Town, Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik enjoys the most enviable location of any hotel in the city – just a five-minute walk from the medieval fortress walls. It has been welcoming famous guests from the start, including Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor. It’s only when you go there that you fully appreciate the magnificence of the setting: the tranquil gardens in which to stroll, a beautiful beach and three restaurants, all offering cinematic views of the Adriatic. "This is a 4-star hotel with a perfect/unique location, and with staff and service that are 5-star plus. Everything else in the hotel is 4-star. Once again, praise to all the warm and professional people who work in this hotel. A deep bow."

"This is a very nice hotel, ideally situated near the Old Town. However, for an expensive, five star hotel, it didn't quite meet our expectations. The room was spacious, with plenty of space for our luggage and belongings. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The television was a bit small and hung crooked on the wall. However, there were multiple channels in English, even some that weren't news channels, so that was a definite plus. Our bathroom had both a rainfall shower and deep soaking tub. However, on more than one occasion our water was scalding hot, forcing us to quickly leave the shower. Upon check-in, our room was out of hand soap, which was corrected following a call to reception. We then had to call two more times as our Nespresso coffee machine wasn't working, but that was also eventually fixed. The wellness center had multiple options, including pools, two Jacuzzi, a sauna, a Roman bath, and a steam room. We enjoyed these options, though both the pool and Jacuzzi were a bit cold for our preference. Breakfast had a made to order menu. Those choices were tasty but the buffet choices were lacking. All in all, this is a very nice hotel, but we did hold it to a higher standard based on its five star rating, and it was a little disappointing."

"I had an amazing time staying at the Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik. After a stressful car issue in Bosnia forced me to change my plans abruptly and head to Dubrovnik instead of Kotor, the hotel welcomed me with such warmth and professionalism. From the moment I stepped in until the moment I checked out, the service was flawless. The room was spacious, beautifully appointed, and stocked with all the amenities you’d ever need plus thoughtful extras. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and everything felt clean, premium, and well-maintained. I stayed in a room with a balcony overlooking the Dubrovnik coastline, and it was absolutely worth it. Sitting outside with a view of the Old Town and the endless horizon was truly special. The bathroom was also generous in size, with a large bathtub perfect for soaking after a long day of exploring. Morning breakfast was excellent, offering a wide variety of high-quality options that tasted just as good as they looked. The location couldn’t be more perfect. It’s an easy and pleasant walk to and from Old Town, making it convenient yet still peaceful."

"Large hotel 5 mins walk from the gates to the old city. Property is right on the water and any of the sea view rooms - we had one - have spectacular views and sunsets. Hotel has its own direct private access to the sea via ladders (the area is very rocky so there is little sand, although the hotel is also beside a small sandy public beach). Rooms and hotel are very clean and maintained but are probably at full modern 5-star standard in terms of full contemporary fit-out, but they are definately upper end 4-star. Some areas have been fully refitted but some bathrooms are a little older - still to a good 4-star standard - but if you are looking for high-end 5-star, maybe not. Facilities are at a 5-star level and the complimentary spa has a huge heated indoor pool, several jacuzzis, a large sauna, steam room and roman baths. Hotel has a full gym, a large senic contenporary bar and veranda, and very good breakfasts (full range of buffett and cooked options), and good room service food. Staff are very helpful and very professional and responsive. I think if you are looking for really high-end utra 5-star, this may disappoint. If you are okay at upper 4-star, then the certainly the location, views, and facilities will impress."

"My wife and I spent three nights at the Hotel Excelsior while exploring the Old Town and the Elafiti Islands. Our room was very clean and comfortable and had an outstanding, near 180 degree view from the balcony, including Lokrum Island and the Old Town marina and walls. The staff is very friendly, accommodating and helpful. The location is perfect: just a few minutes walk to the Old Town but far enough to escape the crowds and find some peace and relaxation either on the balcony, in the steam room or sauna, or on the waterfront deck for a swim. We very much enjoyed our stay and I cannot imagine a better choice, especially for a first time visitor to Dubrovnik, if seeing the Old Town is a priority."
