PB hotel design editorial
Perched on the pine-forested Lapad peninsula just west of Dubrovnik's old city walls, a seven-storey modernist block with full-width glazed balconies and a crisp white facade steps down toward the Adriatic in a geometry that belongs firmly to mid-century Yugoslav hospitality architecture — the tradition that once made the Dalmatian coast a byword for modernist resort design. Hotel Kompas was substantially renovated and repositioned in 2016, the redesign introducing an interior language that works in deliberate counterpoint to the building's utilitarian bones: a near-total white palette softened by warm sand-toned textiles, oak joinery, and large-scale artwork that gives each room its character without crowding the view. The lobby and lounge area deploy oversized spherical pendants — somewhere between cloud and lantern — above a collection of Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs in dove grey and low upholstered sofas, the floor-to-ceiling glazing pulling the Adriatic horizon directly into the room. Guest rooms carry bespoke wall-mounted drawings, loose and gestural in character, set against plastered panels in warm greige; the furniture runs to wire-framed balcony chairs and slender black steel side tables that keep the sightlines open. Below, an infinity pool terrace with white sun loungers steps toward the waterline, and the outdoor restaurant — candlelit beneath a broad Aleppo pine at dusk — manages the particular trick of feeling both designed and entirely uncontrived.

Hotel Kompas Reviews
"I did a lot of research before booking Hotel Kompas and although there were a few hotels that I was interested in, I kept coming back to the Kompas, so glad I did. The hotel is in an excellent location. Turn right out of the back of the hotel and there is a beautiful costal walk with a few restaurants en route, The Cave Bar is a must stop, amazing place. The scenery along here is beautiful, plenty of benches to sit and take in the views and a lot of shrubbery adding colour and scents. Exiting from the back, the beach is in front of you. Turning left is a lovely pedestrianised promenade, an array of restaurants, cafes and bars. It’s very clean and safe and there is more shrubbery to admire along the way. We ate in several restaurants and all the food was good, service great and very reasonably priced. The bus stop for the old town from the hotel is about a 10 minutes walk and a bit further down is the marina. The hotel itself was perfect for us. The reception is located on the tenth floor which has beautiful views, it smells amazing! All staff are wonderful, the young lady on reception I think her name is Ana was extremely helpful, professional and friendly. The restaurant has a fantastic team, can’t single anyone out, they were all great. The pool bar was managed perfectly and staff there were also fab as were housekeeping. The pool terrace is large with plenty of sun-beds, towels provided. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending the Hotel Kompas so If travelling to Dubrovnik and you stay here, you will not be disappointed. Thank you to all for enhancing our stay in beautiful Dubrovnik."

"Wonderful stay at The Kompas. The staff are fantastic, Stanka and her team are professional, welcoming and friendly. Lots of suggestions and guidance for trips and restaurant recommendations. The bar is lush, excellent cocktails, lovely service and stunning views across the bay. Perfect place for a G&T at sunset. Spacious rooms, Comfortable beds, nice crisp white linen, fluffy towels and robes. The spa and wellness centre is great. It was early season so the outdoor pool was closed but the indoor pool was lovely, sauna and gym all good. Breakfast is fine, not the best I’ve experienced but a nice selection and attentive staff, everything seemed fresh and nicely presented. Only issue with this hotel (and probably others at this time of year) is that the heating was on constantly! This made for a very stuffy room and too warm for me. However, when I mentioned it, I was supplied with a fan in the room and no more issue. Location of the hotel on the Lapad peninsula is slightly “out” of the main area but not a problem, easy frequent local buses or a comfortable walk to the centre. Nice coastal walks too. And plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. I would imagine that in summer, it would be nice to be out of the hustle of the old town. I loved this hotel and Dubrovnik. It was my first trip and I would rush back in a heartbeat - Stanka, thank you to everyone for making my trip so special 😊"

"We’ve spent couple days with family and friends, it was our return back after few years. First of all, hotel is placed on great location with stunning view from rooms/lobby, hotel stuff’s are really attentive and kind as well as room maid, they did a great job and have to praise them all for their hospitality! Breakfast and dinner were also great, many variation of food (meat, fish, pasta, vegetables..), you’ll definetly find something for yourself and for children, really no complaint at all. We had room suite, 2 spotless bedrooms with great airconditioner and floor heating in bathroom, so far one of the better accomodation we had in Dalmatian coast. However, i gave them 4 star only because of the SPA center and that really get me anoyed in Dalmatia for a long time. We mainly booked this hotel for NYE because of the spa and indoor pool, but it happens often that water in pool (all area) is around 23’ and that isn’t enough for small children!! Nevertheless, Sheraton in Dubrovnik had coldest water so far but people make reservations in winter time so they could have warm water and if you can’t provide that small thing, what’s the purpose of getting hotel in winter time? Have to mention that they have panel with pool temp and it was pointing at 26/27’ but it was not a case at all! Really anoying and disappointing issue because everything else was great! If your task is to find warm pool, i can’t recommend this hotel (especially Sheraton in Dubrovnik!) but if you want to find spotless place with great food/location and very good accomodation, than it is a hotel that you should pay a visit!"

"So glad I chose this hotel when booking our holiday. What a beautiful hotel. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help. We stayed over my birthday and when we got back to our room after a long day out there was a birthday cake and letter wishing me Happy Birthday. What a lovely unecpected personal touch. The rooms were spacious, modern and very clean. We had a lovely sea view from the balcony. Lots of choices at Breakfast. I used the indoor pool and it was lovely and relaxing. I didn't have the opportunity to use the gym but it looked well equipped. The views from the Zenith bar and reception were amazing. I highly recommend the club sandwich from the bar and their cocktails are great. Even better they are reduced between 13.00 - 18.00. Looking forward to returning in the near future. Lovely walk along the costal path which can be accessed by the ground floor exit by the Sphere restaurant."

"Best hotel ever! My husband and I travel quite a bit, especially around Europe. This hotel, by far, is one of our favorite. First, the location is unbeatable. A bit outside of the old town, which is a major plus - away from the heavy crowds! Secondly, it sits right on the water! The view is truly spectacular; we saw some of the most beautiful sunsets there. Thirdly, we arrived very early (7am), and they kindly offered to accommodate our room. Lastly, everything was very clean, the room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. We really have only great things to say! What a wonderful experience! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."
