PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the pine-forested Lapad peninsula just west of Dubrovnik's old city walls, a seven-storey modernist block with full-width glazed balconies and a crisp white facade steps down toward the Adriatic in a geometry that belongs firmly to mid-century Yugoslav hospitality architecture — the tradition that once made the Dalmatian coast a byword for modernist resort design. Hotel Kompas was substantially renovated and repositioned in 2016, the redesign introducing an interior language that works in deliberate counterpoint to the building's utilitarian bones: a near-total white palette softened by warm sand-toned textiles, oak joinery, and large-scale artwork that gives each room its character without crowding the view. The lobby and lounge area deploy oversized spherical pendants — somewhere between cloud and lantern — above a collection of Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs in dove grey and low upholstered sofas, the floor-to-ceiling glazing pulling the Adriatic horizon directly into the room. Guest rooms carry bespoke wall-mounted drawings, loose and gestural in character, set against plastered panels in warm greige; the furniture runs to wire-framed balcony chairs and slender black steel side tables that keep the sightlines open. Below, an infinity pool terrace with white sun loungers steps toward the waterline, and the outdoor restaurant — candlelit beneath a broad Aleppo pine at dusk — manages the particular trick of feeling both designed and entirely uncontrived.

"What a hotel. We were incredibly impressed throughout our stay at Hotel Kompas. Firstly, all the staff were unbelievably attentive and helpful. The team were so upbeat and friendly and could not do enough to help you. The team got to knew you and what you liked and would proactively offer you your favourite coffee and table at breakfast. The hotel itself is stunning, so modern and good sized rooms. We stayed in 610 it looked over the sea and beach so was a great spot for watching the world to by. Loved the abstract art throughout the hotel. To be completely honest, we contemplated booking Hotel Dubrovnik Palace which is a 5 star over on the other side of the cove, and we took a walk to see what that hotel was like however I can confirm hotel Kompas was the right decision and for us, this hotel is a lot nicer!!! The location is prime - a promenade just below the hotel with beautiful bars and restaurants. The views, the sunset, everything was stunning. The team came to our room and delivered chocolates around 6pm every evening, they also asked if we needed anything and asked how our stay was. This truly stands out as five star service to me. If I could suggest anything, the shower pressure isn’t great and new rainfall shower heads would make a big difference. Breakfast was delicious and fresh every morning - big shout out to Elvis who cooked the most delicious eggs!! There were a few nights of entertainment in the bar over the weekend, this was nice. An Uber takes around 15 minutes to the old town, and it costs around €8-€9 euros. I think Lapad is a great place to stay as you are away from the big crowds in the old town, but still close enough to get to the old town easily for dinner or drinks. Overall we had an amazing 10 night experience, I would highly recommend this hotel. And I would absolutely stay here again."

"We loved our stay at Hotel Kompas to celebrate our anniversary. The staff was very friendly and kind, and gave us a room with a fantastic view of the Adriatic. The room was very clean and modern. The breakfast was delicious, and the Lapad location was also great. Absolutely recommend this hotel for a trip to Dubrovnik!"

"Shame About The Food This is a Lovely hotel in a fantastic location which is overlooking the sea, the customer facing staff are excellent and carry out their duties diligently for the good of the guests. Unfortunately can’t say the same about the food offering which we found to be well below par for this 4.5 Star hotel, the buffet food was served tepid which was brought to the restaurants manager attention!on our second day, this resulted in the restaurant being put on for the main meal only onto picking that from the A la Carte menu for the rest of the week and this was served directly from the kitchen. On our second week there this reverted to the tepid buffet food which we were to pick from the buffet and they would take it away and heat it in the Microwave and bring it back to us, this food on offer itself was not presented In an appetising way at all, there is not a microwave on display for guests to heat their own food to their own desired temperature. The A la Carte option was again brought into play on the 2 Sundays we were there as there was no buffet offering on these days for some reason. We gave this hotel 3 stars based on their eclectic and tepid food offering, we have had far better food in 3 star hotels that put their Buffet offering to shame and we regret choosing to go half board in this hotel as there are plenty of restaurants available in the vicinity of this hotel. The management of this hotel seriously have to take a hard look at what is being offered in their hotel to achieve a 4.5 rating from guests"

"Fabulous, stayed for 4 nights for our wedding anniversary, from the staff to the amazing view from our room the whole experience at the Kompas was fantastic, made even more special by the bottle of bubbles in our room on arrival. If you are looking for a superb base to explore Dubrovnik without staying in the centre would highly recommend. Old town is only a short bus or taxi ride away and the peaceful bay where the Kompas is located has lots of places to eat and explore."
