PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the pine-forested Lapad peninsula just west of Dubrovnik's old city walls, a seven-storey modernist block with full-width glazed balconies and a crisp white facade steps down toward the Adriatic in a geometry that belongs firmly to mid-century Yugoslav hospitality architecture — the tradition that once made the Dalmatian coast a byword for modernist resort design. Hotel Kompas was substantially renovated and repositioned in 2016, the redesign introducing an interior language that works in deliberate counterpoint to the building's utilitarian bones: a near-total white palette softened by warm sand-toned textiles, oak joinery, and large-scale artwork that gives each room its character without crowding the view. The lobby and lounge area deploy oversized spherical pendants — somewhere between cloud and lantern — above a collection of Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs in dove grey and low upholstered sofas, the floor-to-ceiling glazing pulling the Adriatic horizon directly into the room. Guest rooms carry bespoke wall-mounted drawings, loose and gestural in character, set against plastered panels in warm greige; the furniture runs to wire-framed balcony chairs and slender black steel side tables that keep the sightlines open. Below, an infinity pool terrace with white sun loungers steps toward the waterline, and the outdoor restaurant — candlelit beneath a broad Aleppo pine at dusk — manages the particular trick of feeling both designed and entirely uncontrived.

"Stunning hotel. Could not fault anything. Staff, views, pool, breakfast, room everything first class. Cleaning service fantastic in the room, you even get a chocolate at night brought to the room. Cannot wait to return. Lapad is a gorgeous resort perfect for Dubrovnik, just a 10 min Uber away. Def the best hotel with the best location on the beach by all the restaurants"

"Another great experience at this hotel. We stayed last year and we were so impressed that we revisited in July this year. Staff were helpful and friendly, especially the staff working at breakfast and Ratxo who worked on an evening in the bar. The hotel is in a perfect location and the facilities are great. The rooms are clean and modern. The hotel even goes that extra mile if it is your birthday during your stay. I came back to find a cake left in my room. We tried the new restaurant for dinner. The food was very good and great value for money. I would definitely recommend."

"We literally cannot recommend this hotel enough! From the minute we walked into the beautifully scented lobby to the moment we left, all the staff were welcoming, friendly and very helpful in every way. Everywhere is spotlessly clean and well maintained, and our room was lovely, overlooking the sea, what a fabulous view to wake up to every day. We both think our bed was the comfiest hotel one we've ever stayed in. Our room was maintained every day with the selection of teas and coffee replenished, the towels were changed every other day and each night two chocolates were brought to the room - s nice touch. The free aircon was a godsend as it was really hot weather, and there was a safe in the room that was free too. Breakfast was awesome, so much choice - special thanks to Ivan and Samuel Kevin who were always just lovely! There was lots of choice and everything was delicious. Lots of fresh fruit and cereal, yogurts, hot food, pasties, cold meats, cheese - you name it, it was there! We never ate lunch because we'd had such a fab breakfast every day, we weren't hungry till nighttime! The pool was lovely, overlooking the bay, and there were always sunbeds available at any time, with clean towels to use. Because of the huge tree out front, there were shades areas too aswell as full sun, and the whole pool area was swept and then hoovered every morning, and each table wiped down. There was a comfy outdoor seating area, which was great when the live music was on. It was also lovely to go up to the rooftop bar and watch the stunning sunsets, they were incredible. Honestly, we've just left and I cannot wait to return....thankyou to everyone there, we've had the best time!"

"We visited Hotel Kompas for our week holiday in Dubrovnik. We had a fabulous experience from start to finish. Greeted with a modern reception with breath taking views of Lapad Bay. Friendly check in staff. We booked a room with sea view and it was totally worth it as the views were amazing. Rooms were very clean and modern. The pool area was also great and had a very relaxed vibe, With an infinity pool looking over the ocean. We also found Hotel Kompas to be in ideal location, a 2 minute walk to the beautiful beach and also many bars and restaurants, also around a 15 minute taxi drive to the old town. I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Dubrovnik."

"We enjoyed our stay overall, particularly the hotel’s excellent location and the quality and variety of the food on a half-board basis. A lovely touch was receiving a birthday cake and card from Ivana Eres and the team. There were a few disappointing service experiences. The information we received from the bellboy, Vladimir, regarding the room lights was incorrect, and there was some initial confusion finding our room. At reception, Nemo’s response to our concerns also felt less than professional, which was disappointing. On a more positive note, Elvis makes a fantastic omelette at breakfast, although he always seemed rather serious! In contrast, Ivan, the morning greeter, was extremely jolly and welcoming every morning. Overall, a good stay in a great location, with very good food, although some aspects of the customer service could be improved."
