PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian villa on the Istrian waterfront at Novigrad, its terracotta-tiled roofline and arched loggia facing the Adriatic marina, provides Palazzo Rainis Hotel & Spa with both its architectural bones and its central design tension: how to honour a building whose scale and ornament belong to a vanished empire while making it function as a contemporary hotel. The answer, visible in the images, involves pairing the villa's original plasterwork ceilings and round-arched windows with a low-slung modern wing that wraps around a pool terrace, the two volumes connected by a shared limestone deck shaded by mature Atlas cedars that predate the renovation by decades. Inside, the interiors work a confident contrast between the historic shell and a palette that feels more Milan than Adriatic coast — black steel four-poster beds with rattan panel infill, chevron-laid oak parquet, deep forest-green velvet armchairs, and rose-veined marble side tables placed against walls the colour of warm putty. The restaurant sharpens this further: bottle-green lacquered walls hung with gilt-framed marine paintings, a harlequin black-and-white stone floor, cane-backed bistro chairs on slender black frames, and a cluster of globe pendants overhead that give the room the atmosphere of a well-dressed Venetian trattoria transplanted to the northern Istrian coast. The suite rooms facing the marina frame yachts and open water through the original arched glazing, the view doing considerable design work on its own.

"Excellent hotel and friendly helpful staff. Super bedroom (no24) overlooks the pool be warned not heated but then few are in Croatia we found. Easy walk into Novigrad. A costal walk available, turn right out of the front gates. Breakfast were very good. The chef can do proper poached eggs, cooked white, with a runny yolk. This was our first time in Novigrad and even at the end of the season it was a delight, will definitely return."

"This wonderful little hotel is an absolute gem. The staff are all brilliant with special mention to Marina and Ben who couldn’t have done more to make us feel more welcomed and looked after. Our room had everything we needed and the view over the marina to the town was lovely. The pool was very refreshing and the breakfast was superb. It was a shame the bar/restaurant were very quiet, maybe just because we visited at the end of the season? Would not hesitate to recommend, and I hope we will return one day!"

"We loved our stay at this small, friendly hotel. It has lovely views over the marina and is only a short walk into town or the beach area. The staff are all lovely and their customer service is first class, with nothing that is too much trouble. Our room was great and had a small balcony overlooking the pool area. Spotlessly clean everywhere with a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was good with lots of variety. One small point would be to make customers aware that the bottle of water that was put in the room every day isn’t free as in most hotels it is. Also at 5 Euros is very expensive."

"A lovely boutique hotel overlooking the marina in Novigrad. Our room was quiet, lovely, well appointed with a terrace. The breakfast was really good with lots of choice and great coffee. Marina and the rest of the staff were really friendly and helpful."

"We stayed in Novigrad at the end of a walking holiday, and Palazzo Rainis was an excellent place to relax after a week of walking. Located a ten minute walk from Novigrad centre, close to the harbour, it offered solitude and a short walk for restaurants, bars and the like. Our high-ceilinged room was spacious and overlooked the harbour. The large bathroom had a walk in shower and Rituals products. The hotel staff were excellent, and we had a massage in the spa which was wonderful. The outdoor pool (chilly!) and surrounding space was perfect for an afternoon drink and some quiet time. The hotel also arranged a boat for us for a day, and transfers from Lovran and to Trieste airport."
