PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a hillside hamlet above the Mirna River valley, a cluster of Istrian stone farmhouses — some dating back several centuries — was quietly transformed into San Canzian Village & Hotel, one of the more thoughtful agrarian conversions to emerge from Croatia's interior in recent years. The aerial view makes the premise clear: this is not a hotel that was built so much as one that was assembled from an existing village fabric, the local grey karst stone walls and terracotta-tiled rooflines left largely intact while a contemporary pool terrace and new volumes were introduced with careful calibration. Weathering steel screens at the pool edge and polished concrete pool surrounds establish the contemporary layer without overwriting what was already there. Inside, the rooms navigate a tension between the vernacular shell and a distinctly northern European sensibility — grey-washed walls, poured concrete floors, articulated swing-arm reading lamps, antique wooden chests placed alongside low-slung upholstered beds in natural linen and wool throws. The attic rooms trade concrete for wide-plank oak, pitched white-beamed ceilings lifting the same muted palette upward. The restaurant pulls things tighter still: a black-painted ceiling over oak round tables, grey bouclé tub chairs, and a gallery wall of abstract canvases in cobalt and terracotta that manages to feel considered rather than curated. The overall effect is closer to a private Istrian estate than to conventional hotel hospitality.

San Canzian Village & Hotel Reviews

"We recently spent two nights at San Canzian Hotel while traveling through Croatia. We were really excited for this stay, and while there were some positives, the experience ultimately did not feel like a true 5 star experience. Before arrival, the concierge team was excellent. They were very responsive and provided helpful recommendations for restaurants and things to do in the area, which we really appreciated. After initially booking a standard stay, we decided to switch to the Taste of Istria package, which included a private olive oil tasting, a welcome bottle of bubbles, and a dinner for two. Unfortunately, the execution of that package fell short of expectations. While the olive oil tasting was technically just for us, it took place in the regular restaurant with other guests around and was led by the upstairs bartender. They originally placed 3 olive oil tasting cups on the table, but then removed 1 cup when they realized they were out of the third type of olive oil. It did not feel like the private, curated experience we expected. The complimentary welcome bottle also was not proactively provided and we had to ask for it. The included dinner was good, but not particularly memorable. The arrival experience also felt underwhelming. At check in, we were simply shown to our room without any explanation of the property or amenities. When we later returned to reception with questions about things to do around the hotel, one staff member shrugged and could not help, though thankfully another receptionist stepped in. There were also some comfort and amenities issues. For a 5 star property, we were surprised there is no gym. Our attic room never cooled down properly because the thermostat was limited to 19°C, which was not comfortable for sleeping when the unit is across the room. The living room felt lovely, while the bed felt toasty. One detail that felt especially puzzling was the timing of turndown service. They came by around 5:30pm both evenings, at the exact time we were in the room getting ready for dinner. Since the hotel had made our dinner reservations, we were surprised this wasn’t taken into account. As a result, we never actually experienced turndown service during our stay. This felt like a missed opportunity for the kind of thoughtful coordination we would expect. One additional surprise came from the bar. We ordered a drink to take back to our room and noticed a service fee. When we asked about it, we were told it was a charge for taking the drink to our room, but at checkout the fee appeared to have been categorized as a tip. Maybe this was bad translation, but it left a poor impression. Overall, our stay was not bad, but it did not feel like a true 5 star experience. With better execution and attention to detail, this property could be fantastic, but as it stands, it did not quite meet expectations."
