Perched on a rocky promontory at Ika, just south of Opatija along Croatia's Kvarner Riviera, a nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian villa and a crisp contemporary wing share a single seafront garden in one of the Adriatic coast's more quietly assured pairings of old and new. Ikador Luxury Boutique Hotel & Spa brings together these two structures across 35 rooms and suites, the original villa's rendered ochre facade and cypress-framed silhouette anchoring a composition that the modern pavilion — in pale stone with deep-set balconies cantilevered over the Kvarner Gulf — extends rather than overwhelms. An infinity pool and teak deck step down toward the water's edge, sun loungers arranged to face the open sea at a point where the bay stretches wide enough that the horizon appears uninterrupted from dawn. Inside, the interiors work a palette drawn equally from the Adriatic and from mid-century European grand hotel tradition. Herringbone oak floors run through the rooms, beds dressed in ochre velvet throws and flanked by brass-framed benches upholstered in pale leather. The headboards shift between dark panelled oak in the villa-side rooms and deep-blue textured fabric in the contemporary wing, each carrying a different register — one rooted in Austrian Secessionist domesticity, the other in something closer to contemporary Italian resort design.
