PB hotel design editorial

Opatija's identity was built on the ambitions of nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian aristocracy, who turned this Kvarner Bay fishing village into the Riviera of Central Europe. The Keight Hotel Opatija, Curio Collection by Hilton, belongs to a newer chapter of that story — a purpose-built contemporary structure whose grid facade of dark metal-framed windows and pale stone pilasters sits in deliberate dialogue with the Belle Époque villas on the hillside behind it. The building's rhythm is disciplined from the outside, its five floors stepping toward a rooftop bar cantilevered over the upper edge with the confident horizontal emphasis of mid-century modernism, while below, a formally clipped box-hedge garden in concentric rings anchors the property to its sloping site. Inside, the two registers of the hotel's personality become clear. Guest rooms carry warm dark-stained hardwood floors, circular area rugs with abstract line detailing, and upholstered headboards in deep navy or neutral linen — a palette that is quietly residential without straining for period drama. The rooftop bar operates on a different frequency entirely: emerald and white checkerboard tile floors, terracotta cane-framed lounge chairs, clustered amber pendant lights above a marble communal table, and large-leafed tropical planting in matte black planters that bring an almost Rio-via-Dalmatia energy to proceedings. The infinity pool deck, meanwhile, frames an unobstructed panorama across the Adriatic toward Rijeka, the loungers oriented to make the most of that long coastal horizon.

"Absolutely gorgeous hotel in picturesque Opatija. They have a swank rooftop, complete with infinity pool and shaded restaurant/cafe. The lowest level features a 25 meter long pool, separate jetted sections, two saunas, showers, a lux indoor/outdoor relaxation area, and a massage room. The ground floor has another restaurant with a sumptuous breakfast buffet replete with local delicacies; the pršut and the štrukli were my favorites as was the plum tart. The rooms are carefully constructed; carpeted right by the beds (so your feet don’t touch a cold floor when you get up) and then hardwood/laminate elsewhere (great for rolling luggage). And despite the current trend of hotels only having walk-in showers, they have a lovely free-standing tub and a huge shower area (think Japanese wet room concept). There’s even a stool right by the bathtub! It’s super for families with children where baths are de rigueur. They provide you with a beach bag for free and if you love it, you can buy it. There’s great lighting, floor-sweeping blackout curtains, and upgraded bathrobes and slippers. Hilton really put some thought into this place and it shows. The physical premises are complimented by the excellent, attentive, and friendly staff. No request is too big and they will do everything they can to accommodate you. While every single person with whom we interacted was lovely, special mention goes to the multilingual Mrs. Liliana, who ran the restaurant seamlessly and still managed to warmly interact with all, especially the little ones; Mrs. Anya, whose kindness and good-natured smile would instantly put even the grumpiest among us in a good mood; and Mr. Marko, who made excellent cocktails and conversation. I’m already planning our return - see you all again very soon!"

"Another very pleasant stay! All the staff were wonderful – from the bar and spa teams to breakfast and housekeeping. Everyone was extremely friendly, attentive, and welcoming, and we felt very comfortable throughout our stay. The only downside was that, as we were travelling with an electric car, we were not allowed to park in the garage and had to park outside around the corner. With the warm temperatures, this was not ideal. Perhaps a solution could be found for electric cars in the future."

"New modern design hotel. In an area with a lot of really old hotels. Pleasant large rooms and bath, with huge rain shower and freestanding bathtub. I liked the rooftop pool and bar. Unfortunately in the morning it opens at 9, and the indoor pool at 8, so the pool was not really useable for me. Parking is tight. Only the front end suites have a sea view. Staff was very friendly throughout, from valet to reception and pool bar."

"We stayed at this hotel in April and, unfortunately, our experience was overshadowed by the way management handled a serious issue involving our rental car. During our stay, the hotel’s vehicle lift system malfunctioned, leaving our rental car inaccessible. The failure was severe enough that our vehicle fell onto another car, causing significant damage. Because we had a flight to catch, the hotel arranged transportation for us to the airport and assured that they would return the vehicle on our behalf and take care of any resulting charges. Unfortunately, that promise was not honored. The hotel returned the vehicle the next day, but the rental company subsequently charged us additional fees and withheld our deposit. Instead of making us whole and dealing with the rental company themselves, the hotel spent months debating responsibility while we were left chasing a resolution. Eventually, they offered only a partial reimbursement through an insurance company and declared the matter resolved, even though we remain out of pocket and are still waiting for the return of our rental deposit. To make matters worse, the hotel offered a complimentary future stay. While perhaps well-intentioned, it completely missed the point. This was never about receiving a free night at a hotel; it was about honoring commitments, taking responsibility, and treating customers fairly. The most disappointing part is not the original incident. Equipment failures can happen anywhere. What matters is how a hotel responds when something goes wrong. Instead of taking ownership of a problem entirely of their own making, management shifted the burden onto the guest, resulting in months of emails, follow-ups, stress, lost time, and ultimately financial loss. We literally lost money as a result of staying at this hotel, despite having done nothing wrong. What makes this particularly bewildering is that the amount involved was insignificant for a hotel of this size and reputation. Customer service is tested when things go wrong. In our case, the hotel’s handling of this incident demonstrated a disappointing lack of accountability, professionalism, and customer care. Based on how this situation was handled, I cannot recommend this hotel."
