The Secessionist tilework that lines the entrance vestibule — pale celadon green, patterned with geometric medallions in amber and white, framing a pair of original walnut doors with arched transom glazing — tells you immediately that this building predates any hotel brief by several decades. Constructed in the early twentieth century as a grand residential villa on the edge of Split's historic centre, the structure was sensitively converted into Heritage Hotel Fermai Split, part of Accor's MGallery collection, bringing twenty-first-century hospitality into bones shaped by Austro-Hungarian architectural confidence. The interiors navigate the expected tension between preservation and contemporary comfort with considerable poise. Rooms are dressed in white panel-moulded walls — the cornicing retained and celebrated rather than smoothed away — against which brass ring pendant lights and articulated black wall lamps in the manner of Serge Mouille read as deliberately anachronistic. Linen-upholstered beds sit on herringbone oak parquet, flanked by cane-fronted oak nightstands and sculptural wooden side tables, while paisley-upholstered wingback chairs introduce a note of studied eclecticism. The restaurant pushes this conversation further: a cluster of overlapping brass halo pendants floats above a boldly striped black-and-white floor, channelled velvet banquettes running beneath warm sand-coloured walls articulated with white wainscoting. Throughout, the property keeps the building's early-century gravitas intact while refusing to museify it.
