PB hotel design editorial

Fitted into a seventeenth-century Venetian fortress at the edge of Zadar's ancient peninsula, where the old city walls drop toward the Foša harbour channel, Hotel Bastion draws its structural character directly from the military stonework that surrounds it. The original bastion — part of the defensive ring the Venetian Republic built to protect this strategically vital Adriatic port — provides the hotel's lower levels with walls of dressed limestone several metres thick, and the glass-roofed pavilion visible from above sits within the old fortification's footprint like a lantern set into ancient masonry. The five-storey coral-rendered wing, added in the later conversion, steps back from the harbour in a roofline of terracotta pantiles that aligns naturally with the surrounding old town fabric. Inside, the 27 rooms and suites carry a palette of pale taupe, warm greige, and dove grey — diamond-quilted upholstered headboards, dark-stained oak floors, nailhead-trimmed velvet armchairs, and octagonal gilt mirrors on console tables establish a quietly contemporary European register without straining against the building's age. The formal restaurant retains its period mouldings and wainscoting, furnished with sage-green velvet medallion-back chairs and sheer drum chandeliers, while the marina-facing dining pavilion shifts register entirely: woven rattan seating, retractable white canvas canopies, and cobalt blue glassware giving it the easy atmosphere of a well-dressed Dalmatian waterfront terrace.

"Wonderful location on the medieval walls with great views of the harbour, yachts and boating activities. Easy access to the Sea Organ, old town and major sights. Our room was spacious, well designed and very comfortable. The bathroom was well designed and appointed, and the bed enabled a great sleep. Breakfast was a highlight with a wide range of cooked options together with an attractive buffet. The restaurant is highly recommended with a very good array of food options and superior wine list. I would definitely stay here again, and would dine at the restaurant as well in a hearbeat."

"We had a decent sized room with a reasonable bathroom. Enough lights in the room. The location is pretty good, on the “tourist” side of the harbor. So far, so good. The desk is too small, and one-third is filled with coffee equipment and a telephone. There is only one available plug at the desk and no USB ports. Luckily, I travel with a triple-tap and an advanced plug so that I can connect at least five devices with one plug. Overall, the desk/electrical setup is inadequate. There is one plug at each bedside, and that does help some. So does the excellent Internet service. One and only one luggage rack in the room, but a bench at the base of the bed works for that purpose too. Two types of bedside light on each side, but one of the four lights did not work. The hotel has only one elevator so it can be slow to get up or down. Breakfast was just okay. Staff is friendly and helpful. Would we stay here again? Maybe but we were not impressed with Zadar so the likelihood of our returning is small."

"We just finished a lovely stay at the Hotel Bastion. The hotel is situated in a great location right on the edge of the old town close to restaurants, historical sites and the river which had the most wonderful sunsets. The staff was very accommodating, especially the team at breakfast in the morning. The only items that kept me from giving a 5 star review was the noise and the air conditioning. When we travel we like our room to be on the cool side. The air conditioning was turned off for the winter, not a problem since the windows opened. This became a problem in the middle of the night when the night club let out, followed by the birds waking up and then the ships in the harbor sounding their horns. Had to sleep with the windows closed after that. This is probably more of an us problem but still frustrating."
