PB hotel design editorial

For nearly a century, the Grand Hotel Evropa stood on Wenceslas Square as one of Prague's most recognizable Art Nouveau facades — gilded, tiled, and unmistakably itself — while quietly falling into disrepair behind its ornamental ironwork. The building that now houses W Prague, which arrived in 2024 following almost a decade of painstaking restoration, required three architectural practices to bring it back: Chapman Taylor handled the heritage restoration and served as architect of record, Benoy designed the new elliptical wing, and DAM.architekti contributed to the new-build concept. The original 1903–1905 structure, designed by Bedřich Bendelmayer and Alois Dryák, remains a protected monument, and at night its illuminated facade — lettered in neon, crowned in gilt — still commands the square as it always has. Inside, the 161 rooms and suites spread across the restored seven-story heritage building and a new nine-story wing, with AvroKO leading the key public spaces and premium suites and Chapman Taylor taking the spa and standard guestrooms. AvroKO drew the design concept from Bohemian glassmaking, alchemy, and the dreamlike botanical illustrations of Alphonse Mucha — legible in the circular tinted-mirror headboards that scatter colour like stained glass, the gold-leaf bar ceiling where pleated mushroom columns bloom upward, and the verde marble vanities that anchor the premium suites in something heavier and older than the rest. The rooftop terrace, dressed in terracotta scallop tiles and tropical abundance, feels like a greenhouse escaped to the rooftops.

About

As the social soul of the city, W Prague breathes life into the former and famed Grand Hotel Evropa. This stunning Art Nouveau building, once a witness to defining historical moments and a boundary-pusher in the 1900s, now returns to do so again in true W fashion. Throughout the 161 luxurious suites and guest rooms at this hotel in the center of Prague, bold and whimsical designs adorned with golden details evoke the essence of Alchemy. The secret ingredient? An expansive culinary journey — a masterclass in contrasting flavors and genres — paired with restorative rituals at our AWAY Spa, where water, light, and modern indulgence create a sanctuary beneath the city’s rhythm. Where nature meets modernity and reality mingles with fantasy, our luxury hotel in Prague becomes a magnet for moments worth remembering. This is the comeback of a legacy; this is history in the remaking.

"This hotel was newly updated and room are modern and well appointed. The star of the show is the service - concierge, whatever/whenever, spa/pool staff, bar staff and breakfast staff. Everyone was so great. The breakfast each day was an absolute treat - we looked forward to starting our day w all the fresh cooked to order and great buffet. The drinks in the bar in the basement were fun and creative and the staff in the back bar were also very attentive. My massage was great as well. And the gym had everything I needed for a great work out. Lastly - the pool/hot tub area was super relaxing. The only downside is the construction outside but you can't hear it when you're inside so it's not a bother at all. We highly recommend this for your next Prague visit"

"We had a wonderful stay at the W Prague! It was our first time at this hotel—we've stayed on the other side of the river, so it was a new experience. The location was right in the middle of all the action and we were able to walk to restaurants and sights. The real star of the stay was the service we received. From the doormen who greeted us to the concierges and the people who served us at the delicious breakfast— everything was five stars. Filip at the Minus one bar was a standout and we loved the cocktail and tasting experience. As a Marriott Ambassador, my husbabd was upgraded to a beautiful suite—we didn't want to leave! The housekeeping and turndown was also outstanding. We're already planning our return to the W Prague."

"A truly great hotel. It's expensive, but worth every penny. Everything about it says luxury and style. Our room was large, particularly for a European hotel, and very clean, comfortable, and quiet The breakfast buffet is huge and outstanding, and the staff there was attentive to our every need. The concierge staff truly sets this hotel apart. They are happy to answer any question and constantly offer to help with reservations, directions, transportation, restaurants, bars, and itinerary ideas. They gave us great recommendations for restaurants and bars. The whole staff really made us feel like it mattered to them how our stay was. The location was extremely convenient to the major tourist areas - Old Town, New Town, and Lesser Town across the river. And it's close to a tram ride to the Prague Castle and a quick walk to the train station. We will definitely stay there again if we go back to Prague."

"Stayed for 4 nights to attend meetings at the Prague Congress. Hotel was recently refurbished; it kept its original facade (protected building) but the interior was redone to high specifications. You have an option to stay at the old or newer section; apparently the older section is very nice but I was assigned a suite in the new section. There is work ongoing outside to rebuild the tram system but this did not detract from my accessing the premises. I used their limousine service who met me promptly at the airport and delivered me to the front of the hotel in 40 minutes. The front facade blends nicely into its environment - it is pretty. Arrival was also met promptly by the door staff; check-in was by a staff member who was very professional, efficient and genuinely welcoming to this guest - I love it. Assigned room was a large suite that was nicely laid out and adorned with furniture that were functional and aesthetic in appearance. Everything functioned well, re: climate, wifi, lighting, curtains (all controlled from bed). I liked the feature for night lights to come on as soon as I stepped out of bed. Room was made up twice a day (turn down service) with attention to detail - I liked the notes from the staff and small treats that came every day. There is a slight fragrance throughout the premises that is similar to that used in Westins - to remind you that you are visiting a Bonvoy hotel perhaps? I ate breakfast and dinner at the hotels' restaurant - service was attentive and excellent. The food was good but not great - but there are many options in the area. Location is great as it is close (10 mins) to the popular old section of the city. I also partook in their spa in the basement that provided great service and that offered many amenities if you want to spend time visiting the various dipping pools and rooms. This is a great hotel for visiting the city. Location and staff were great."

"This was quite simply one of the most elegant, upscale boutique hotels I have ever stayed in. I spent six days at the W Prague while attending an international conference, and from the moment I walked through the doors, it was clear that this hotel is a special place. The design is uniquely chic and modern without feeling cold. My room was beautifully decorated with thoughtful details that made everyday comfort effortless. USB‑A, USB‑C, and two pin European wall plugs were located conveniently near the bed and sink. motion‑sensor lights softly illuminated the floor when I got up at night. The lighting systems was intuitive and allowed me to control the entire room with just two buttons which were by both the bed and the entry way. Every detail of this room felt intentional and well-designed. The staff were consistently professional and welcoming. The concierges were truly exceptional, especially Nela, who went above and beyond. She provided excellent restaurant recommendations (and secured reservations), and when my traveling companion developed a medical concern, she promptly arranged for a doctor to come to the hotel within hours. Nela was incredibly attentive and demonstrated an impressive level of care. Breakfast, which was included in our reservation, was outstanding. The buffet featured a beautiful and delicious selection of breads, yogurt, fruit, and juices. The wait staff delivered high‑quality made‑to‑order dishes such as Eggs Florentine and French toast. It was a delightful way to start each day. The location could not be better. The hotel is perfectly central, with entrances to two metro lines just steps from the front door, and the third metro line only a five‑minute walk away, making it easy to get around the city. In every respect, from design and comfort to service and location, the W Prague exceeded my expectations. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it without hesitation."
