PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1909 as the Copenhagen Central Post Office by architect Heinrich Wenck — the same hand behind Copenhagen Central Station across the street — the Danish Baroque building that houses Villa Copenhagen presents one of the city's most assertive civic facades: red brick and pale limestone, a scrolled pediment heavy with allegorical stonework, and a copper lantern tower that has oriented Vesterbrogade for over a century. The hotel conversion, completed in 2020, delivered 390 rooms across the building's generous floor plates, with Bjarke Ingels Group handling the architectural adaptation and interior studio Stylt Trampoli responsible for the guest experience throughout. The rooms sit in two registers — lighter, Scandinavian-inflected spaces on the lower floors, where warm oak shelving units partition sleeping areas from work zones, quilted charcoal headboards anchor linen-toned walls, and articulated black steel pendants arc overhead — and darker, moodier attic rooms tucked beneath the mansard, where limewashed plaster walls meet porthole windows and globe chandelier clusters give the whole arrangement the feeling of a private Copenhagen apartment rather than a hotel floor. The brasserie draws the building's original brick piers into a confident room of red banquette seating, geometric encaustic tile, coffered ceilings lined with woven panels, and globe pendant lighting that echoes the attic rooms above. On the roof, a lap pool cuts between the building's original stone balustrade finials, looking out over an unbroken panorama of early twentieth-century Copenhagen brick.

"We stayed here for a long weekend. The hotel is beautifully designed and furnished. We stayed in a standard room, which was compact but beautifully designed and although small, we found the size of the room adequate for the weekend. Our window overlooked the swimming pool. The pool itself was really nice, as too was the gym. Although the gym was very small for the size of this vast hotel. The hotel was perfectly sited next to the railway station - we caught the train into the city from the airport. The hotel itself was only several minutes walk away from Tivoli Gardens and around a 15 to 20 minute walk away from the main shopping district of the city, along with other attractions. We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was in a beautiful big room in the basement. The selection of food catered for most cultural tastes. The hotel let us check-in early for free, but our late check out we had to pay for. The only disappointing aspect of our stay was how impossible it was to get hold of reception on the phone. The stay were always too busy checking in guests, so calls would go unanswered. That said though, we would happily stay here again."

"I had a great stay at Villa Copenhagen. It’s a beautiful hotel with fantastic interior design — modern yet still very cosy and welcoming. The lobby is especially impressive and creates a great atmosphere, and the restaurants and common areas feel very well thought through with excellent amenities throughout. I didn’t end up using the pool or spa during my stay, but it’s definitely a big plus that they’re available. The pool is heated, which makes it even more appealing, especially in Copenhagen’s cooler weather. The rooms were super modern and cosy. Mine was slightly on the smaller side, although I was staying on the fourth floor with slanted roofs, so that likely contributed to the layout. That said, it still felt comfortable and well designed. I also really appreciated the good dietary awareness in the courtyard restaurant — it made dining easy and enjoyable. Overall, it was a great experience and I’d happily stay here again."

"I'm so sorry I only had flying visit. In the short time I was here I could not find fault. The staff are so friendly and warm. Great first impression that continued throughout. Perfect room, best hotel sleep ever, stunning breakfast. The terrace pool is unique -long and narrow and stays open late. Live music in the courtyard while having a drink at the bar. This is a hotel I'd like to come back to."

"Booked Villa Copenhagen through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts. Amex offered various perks such as room upgrade if available, free daily breakfast buffet, $100 USD (630 DKK) with hotel services (like bar, room services, etc.), and other perks. My stay at the Villa was nothing but perfect. I had an upgraded room, which was nice and cozy as a solo traveler. Also received a little gift from Amex (a candle) as well. What I really liked about the hotel: 1) Hotel staff and service. The staff and service were absolutely spectacular! After my first night stay, of course room was tidied the following morning, which is standard amongst all hotels. BUT what is worth mentioning is when I came back from exploring the area, perhaps around evening time, staff had magically placed drinking water in a vase container with glass cups next to bed stand. I was really surprised wondering where this came from?! With all the hotels I have been to, I have never experienced this act of service. I really loved that touch as small as it may seem! After spending hours and hours walking around Copenhagen, it was really nice to be re-hydrated after a long day. 2) Again hotel staff. On my last night in Copenhagen, I was feeling ill. Perhaps food poisoning. I ordered room service asking for carbonated soda and ice with hopes it can help alleviate my symptoms. When room service stopped by, I mentioned I was feeling quite ill and that I may have gotten food poisoning. After listening to my struggles, Sumnima Rai (staff member who dropped off room service), mentioned what helps her with acid reflux/stomach issues is tonic water, with lemon and pink salt. Without hesitation, she offered to try and make it for me. A few moments later, she came back with the drink. I will never forget this act of kindness. Villa Copenhagen, if you are reading this- please recognize and celebrate Sumnina for her kindness and hospitality! 3) Breakfast Buffet and the hotel bar- crazy delicious. Breakfast buffet had a huge variety of breakfast foods, which included Rug Bakery items. My stomach was happy every morning! The hotel bar had a signature drink menu and I really loved the Cream Corn Yuzu drink. 4) Location. 5-8 min walk to Central station. 20 minute train ride from CPH airport. 1 hour train ride to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and also Frederikborg castle. Nyhavn is a 20-30 minute walk depending on how fast you can walk. Literally everything is in walkable distance. Unfortunately Tivoli theme park was closed due to the winter weather but it is down the street from the hotel and across central station. 5) Heated pool was really nice. It was a great contrast to the winter weather. Gym is quite small but the hotel is working on expansion. When I do visit Copenhagen again (at a time when the weather is bit more friendlier), Villa Copenhagen will always be my first pick! 5/5 ⭐️"
