PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a volcanic promontory above Dominica's Tibay Bay, where cliffs drop directly into some of the clearest water in the Caribbean, Secret Bay was conceived from the outset as something closer to a private forest compound than a conventional hotel. Architect Fruto Vivas, the Venezuelan visionary known for his tree-house structures and deep engagement with ecological building, designed the villas to sit within the rainforest canopy rather than clear it — each structure positioned to preserve the existing topography of Dominica's rugged northwest coast near Portsmouth. The result is a collection of just six villas and bungalows built almost entirely in local hardwoods, their exposed rafter ceilings, wide-plank floors, and louvered timber walls giving every interior the warmth of something grown rather than constructed. Inside, the material language stays consistent and unforced — teak bed frames, stainless steel kitchen fittings set against dark stone countertops, teal and coral accent cushions that echo the water below rather than competing with it. The open-plan villas dissolve the boundary between living space and canopy through full-height sliding timber doors, each unit furnished with its own deck where cross-braced hardwood balustrades frame unobstructed views across the Caribbean Sea toward Guadeloupe. The restaurant pavilion carries the same structural honesty: bentwood dining chairs upholstered in chartreuse, black-topped tables, a floor-to-ceiling wine wall in warm timber joinery, the whole room open on two sides to the forest and sea beyond.

"Absolutely amazing hotel with cliff top villas and each with a villa host offering the best attention and service! The hotel pool and the secret beaches nearby are a must! The tranquility can be felt in endless waves especially with the morning yoga by the ocean."

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hands down the best massage I’ve ever had. I booked a deep tissue massage with Gemma at Secret Bay, and the entire experience was top notch from start to finish. The setting was private, secluded, and intimate — nothing over the top, just beautifully done in every way. The open-air massage suite overlooked the Caribbean Sea, with the sound of waves crashing in the background. Gemma is incredibly skilled and attentive, and I left feeling completely refreshed. Highly recommend."

"We don't have enough great things to say about the service at the hotel - the staff is truly phenomenal, everyone was so lovely and friendly and warm - they were by far the highlight of the stay! The property is stunning and we loved going in our plunge pool daily. It felt incredibly private. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a romantic and secluded vacation away from masses of tourists. The island felt unspoiled. Lots of activities and excursions to do if you are interested but also lots of relaxation to be had if you want to lounge around the resort!"

"We just got back from an incredible trip to Secret Bay! Despite both of our kids (ages 4 and 2) coming down with the flu, we had a great time. The healthcare was great. A high quality nurse came to our villa, we were able to speak as much as we needed/wanted with a doctor who was great, and we had to go to the emergency room twice and the General Manager came to ensure our care was top notch and all of our questions/concerns addressed. Was hugely impressed. In addition, because of the kids being sick, we constantly cancelled and changed plans which the hotel was very understanding of. The food was great. The activities were great. I went swimming with Sperm Whales, which was a once in a lifetime off-the-charts experience. Huge thank you to the entire staff."

"We really enjoyed our experience at Secret Bay. We stayed in a Zabuco villa and thought it was perfect. The views from our deck were amazing and we loved having dinner there one night. The food was very good and I highly recommend having your host making a traditional breakfast in your villa. We loved it! The island of Dominica is lush and tropical. Incredibly green but that has a downside to it since it rain frequently. Everything felt very private and we rarely saw other people. I think it's the perfect resort for a honeymoon or special occasion. There are a few downsides worth mentioning. We loved doing the adventurous things but Secret Bay is about 1.5 hours away from where those activities are. It is $290 round trip to have a driver take you to those things. If we go again, I would spend a few nights at a resort near the activities to save time and money and then go to Secret Bay after that. While we didn't have a bug issue at our villa, there were a lot of bugs at the restaurant for dinner. Important to put on bug spray, as we had quite a few bites when we didn't. The other thing is that the beach at the resort is not very nice and pretty rocky. I'm not sure if there are nice beaches elsewhere on the island, but it is a volcanic island so there isn't the which sand and crystal clear water that is on other islands. We didn't have an issue with that, as we preferred the beautiful mountainous scenery and tropical feel compared to a flat island that has beautiful beaches. Overall, we would definitely return to Secret Bay!"
