PB hotel design editorial

Playa Esmeralda, on the Dominican Republic's largely undeveloped northeastern coast, was chosen precisely because it hadn't yet been claimed by the all-inclusive machine — and the central design challenge facing Zemi Miches All-Inclusive Resort, part of Hilton's Curio Collection, was how to deliver the scale that brand demands without flattening the landscape that makes the location worth visiting. The answer arrived in the form of low-rise terracotta-toned blocks arranged across a dense palm grove, their rooflines kept deliberately below the canopy, solar panels laid flat across the tops so they read as infrastructure rather than imposition. A curving arc building closest to the beach pulls the massing into a crescent that frames the grounds rather than dominating them. Inside, two distinct interior registers run through the property. The villa-category rooms carry exposed timber roof trusses, woven rattan headboards in a herringbone pattern, and ochre cushioning against pale stone floors — warm, craft-forward, and clearly in conversation with regional material traditions. The tower rooms shift register: textured sculptural concrete relief panels replace the woven surfaces, leather-wrapped headboards in burnt sienna anchor the beds, and floor-to-ceiling glazing frames the Caribbean directly. The lagoon pool complex, with its fire-pit islands set within illuminated water, gives the exterior its most theatrical gesture — circular banquette seating surrounded by water, a device borrowed more from Bali than the Caribbean, translated here into teak decking and low-slung upholstery that softens the drama just enough.

"Beautiful resort. Decent food. Very clean very new. The most helpful and very nice man named Ransel Perez, who was the first person to greet us when we arrived and the last to bid us farewell when we left. He truly made our entire experience what it was. Although we were just there for a few days, Fri-Mon we really really enjoyed ourselves. Danny at the bar was wonderful as well. We can’t wait to come back!!"

"Overall a beautiful resort, Jose the bartender at the pool bar was amazing and the pool crew took good care of all the pool customers . Jose the manager at Manicato helped turn around our dinner experience when our server appeared disengaged and not friendly. On another note, whoever made the decision to only feature one beer (a light lager) in all the the restaurant and bars didn’t have the best guest experience in mind, that should be re evaluated asap."

"The resort was great! Very new and clean. The ocean is a beautiful light blue, and delightful to look at. The employees at the resort were so friendly and kind, we felt very taken care of. A special shout out to Yohandy the bellman, he was outstanding! So professional and polite!"

"My new wife and I are on our way home from an amazing honeymoon at Zemi Miches, and we can’t say enough good things about it. We would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a relaxing, beautiful getaway. The rooms were stunning, spotless, and thoughtfully designed. The pool and beach areas were equally impressive—exactly what you picture when you dream about escaping to the Caribbean. There is always something to do at the resort, for the entire family.  You will not be bored.  The daily and nightly entertainment was fantastic, led by the dynamic duo of “Superman” and “Scooby.” They truly love what they do, and it shows. Karen was wonderful as well, and she even managed to “fix” my bracelet during a morning class when it was looking pretty sad. Thanks, Karen, you made me look much more crafty and skilled than I actually am! We visited during a slower period, so the resort never felt crowded. One thing that definitely never felt empty, however, was my drink. Luis, Danny, and Jose at the bars were outstanding and somehow found a way to keep us smiling, even on the occasional cloudy day. The breakfast buffet was excellent, and the food truck quickly became one of our favorite spots. At checkout, the concierge asked if there was anything the resort could improve. Honestly, that was a difficult question. The only thing we could come up with was that the wings could use some ranch dressing. The wings themselves were delicious, and just happen to believe ranch is a basic human right, LOL. The fact that this was our only suggestion says a lot about how much we enjoyed our stay, and how amazing this result is! Victor at the lobby bar set the tone from the moment we arrived. He was upbeat, welcoming, and made some incredible cocktails. The standard liquor selections were impressive and included brands like Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire, El Jimador, and, of course, excellent local rums. The wine selection is fairly basic, and beer lovers may find the option of only 1 very limited, but with cocktails this good, we hardly noticed.  Please note that higher end wines are available for purchase. A huge shoutout goes to Euri, who served us dinner on three different evenings and even stopped by another night just to say hello when he saw us in another of the resort’s restaurants. He typically works at Yuca or Toa, and sometime Boba. PLEASE do yourself a favor and ask for him by name. His service was truly five-star, and he would make an outstanding Maître d’. Seriously, please promote this man! One more note, we did not upgrade to the “Club Azure”. With only being here for 5 nights, we did not feel the need. Plus we wanted a room that was an ocean view/beachfront Plunge Pool room. Only Tropical Plunge Pools are available and (in our opinion) the standard food and beverage offerings are more than enough. If there for more than 5 nights, “Club Azure” may be worth looking into. We were genuinely sad to leave. Yohandy helped us with our luggage and got us on our prearranged shuttle for the trip back to the airport. Speaking of transportation, I highly recommend emailing the concierge before arrival to arrange round-trip transfers. Ours cost about $300 and was worth every penny. The arrival area at PUJ can be a little overwhelming/intimidating, and we were extremely thankful to have transportation waiting for us through W2M. What surprised us most was the quality of the food and beverages. We arrived expecting a nice all-inclusive resort and left wondering how soon we could come back. We came as guests, but feel like we are leaving our new friends!"

"We recently stayed at Zemi Miches and, overall, left underwhelmed. The resort is new, modern, and visually attractive, and the rooms are generally well designed and comfortable. However, the overall experience did not match expectations for a premium Hilton/Curio all-inclusive property. A few things stood out before we even arrived. I had emailed the resort with a pre-arrival question and never received a response. I also tried calling, and even Hilton was unable to get a clear response from the property. That lack of responsiveness was disappointing and, unfortunately, reflected some of the service inconsistency we experienced during the stay. The location is also worth noting. The resort is approximately an hour and a half from Punta Cana airport, so guests should be prepared for a long transfer. More importantly, this is not really a traditional beach resort. The property itself is attractive, but there is no meaningful beach directly at the resort. The closest usable beach is roughly a 10–15 minute walk away, which may surprise guests expecting a beachfront Caribbean resort experience. The rooms were decent and well done. We had two rooms; one was upgraded upon request, but the other was not, even though I have Hilton Gold status and the resort occupancy appeared very low. That was disappointing, especially given the availability. Food was average overall. The restaurant menus did not appear to change during the stay, which made the dining experience feel repetitive. Boba, the Thai restaurant, was average. Guacate, the buffet, was decent. Manicota, the Italian restaurant, was also decent, and the wood-fired pizza was excellent. Toa, the Dominican restaurant, was one of the better meals we had. The most concerning issue was at Yuca Grill, where I became ill after eating and had what appeared to be food poisoning. The hotel did place a get-well card, tea, and crackers in the room, which was appreciated, but there was no real apology or meaningful concern shown by the property. For a resort at this level, that response felt inadequate. The amenities were also more limited than expected. There were no real beach-style activities such as scuba, snorkeling, parasailing, jet skis, or similar offerings. On the positive side, there were also no outside vendors aggressively hawking products, which made the environment more relaxed. Entertainment was mediocre. The shows were outdoors and therefore weather-dependent, which became an issue because it rained heavily on three of the days during our stay. In summary, Zemi Miches is a modern and attractive resort with some good elements, but the overall experience fell short. Between the long transfer, lack of true beach access, average food, repetitive menus, limited activities, inconsistent service, and poor handling of a food-related illness, I would have difficulty recommending it unless someone specifically wants a quiet, modern resort and is not expecting a classic beach-focused all-inclusive experience."
