PB hotel design editorial

Oscar de la Renta's hand in a Caribbean hotel is rare enough to reframe everything you see. Tortuga Bay, his only foray into hospitality design, was shaped by the fashion designer's personal vision for how Dominican luxury should feel — not imported and anonymous, but rooted in the vernacular warmth of the island itself. Set within the vast Puntacana Resort and Club estate, the property comprises just 13 villas arranged along a quiet stretch of Juanillo beach, their butter-yellow facades and steep hipped roofs visible from the water as a composed, almost residential cluster behind a curtain of royal palms. Inside, de la Renta's interiors draw on British Colonial plantation house conventions — dark mahogany four-poster beds with turned finials, travertine tile floors softened by woven cotton rugs, louvered shutters framing garden terraces — while botanical prints and indigo-accented cushions give the rooms a personal, collected quality rather than a decorator's resolved scheme. The vaulted ceilings push space upward with a cathedral lightness that keeps the relatively modest footprint from feeling confined. The open-air dining pavilion takes a more contemporary approach: a wide palapa structure with a thatched roof carried on painted white columns, its bleached timber deck furnished with sculptural resin-and-oak chairs that sit comfortably against the thatch without forcing a contrast. Limestone pool terracing and rope-woven outdoor furniture complete a property that has always understood restraint as its primary luxury.

Tortuga Bay Reviews

"From the moment we stepped off the plane, Tortuga Bay’s VIP airport arrival service made getting through the airport quick and easy. The highlight of the stay was the staff. Yoyo at the beach bar was always friendly, and Victor, Victor Sanchez, and Lupes at the pool restaurant consistently provided excellent service. They helped make the trip more enjoyable without being overbearing. The resort itself is quiet and well maintained. Having a golf cart to get around was convenient, and exploring the property’s freshwater cenote was a nice surprise. The beach was never overcrowded, making it easy to find a relaxing spot. Overall, if you’re looking for a quieter alternative to the large all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana and appreciate good service, Tortuga Bay is definitely worth considering."

"Arrival: From the moment we arrived, Tortuga Bay Hotel exceeded every expectation. You barely walk off the plane and an associate is there, ready to whisk you away through a VIP passport control and customs. In the lounge and during the extremely short car ride, you’ll have access to water and beer, so you can start your vacation off on the right foot! In less than an hour of landing, you will be at the hotel and enjoying a nice cocktail by the beach. Resort/Accommodations: Every corner of the resort feels elegant, private, and serene. Being able to explore the resort and surrounding areas by bike or golf cart is also a fun touch! The rooms are spacious and beautifully designed—a blend of luxury with a peaceful Caribbean atmosphere. The beach is massive, well-maintained, and never felt crowded. Even though we came during the seaweed season, the water was still swimmable—in part because they spend at least and hour cleaning the beach each morning. We lucked out and had sunny weather the whole time. Service: In addition to the prime location, the service was warm, personalized, and truly five-star. My mom and I came to celebrate my birthday, and Mari Luz and the rest of the staff at Tortuga Bay made our stay truly special. They helped plan a birthday breakfast for us by the pool, complete with balloons, cake, and the best mangos I’ve ever tasted. We cannot speak of them highly enough! Departure: Departing the resort—while sad—was just as smooth as our arrival. No complaints! Overall, it was an unforgettable stay, and we absolutely plan to return someday!"

"From the moment we arrived at Tortuga Bay it was magical. The welcome was exceptional with so much warmth. The assigned ambassador was lovely. The room upgrade with the view brought tears to my eyes. The beauty and serenity of the grounds are amazing. A hammock or two, a soccer ball … invited their enjoyment. The grounds in front of of the individual villas are majestic. Can’t wait to return."

"My husband, son, daughter-in-law, 15-month-old grandson, and I stayed at this hotel for one week. We had an incredible time. The hotel is fantastic—everything is tasteful, beautiful, and pleasant. The staff is wonderful; they went out of their way to please us and fulfilled every request. They were truly extremely thoughtful, friendly, and polite. Special mention goes to the staff members we interacted with most, such as Victor, Daniela, Wilco, Bernardo, Yoyo, and Yocasta. Everyone else was great too, but these were the ones we dealt with the most. There are plenty of activities to enjoy (don't miss the Ecological Reserve with its wonderful freshwater lagoons). The food was excellent at all the restaurants we visited (there are several within the Punta Cana Resort complex), and the beaches are beautiful; all in all, it was a truly delightful and wonderful week. We plan to return next year with more family members."

"What a wonderful vacation my family and I had at Tortuga Bay Puntacana! The staff is world class. All of them were very kind, responsive, attentive and dedicated to making sure we had everything we needed for an enjoyable getaway! The hotel is beautiful and clean, the food was AMAZING and the staff made our trip unforgettable. We enjoyed La Yola (so beautiful), Bamboo ("best steak ever"), and a private chef dinner at our Villa (the waiter, Wilco, made the evening super fun and relaxing). Even my picky teenagers loved all the food. Swimming in the Ecological Reserve, (which comes with the stay) was a highlight of the trip! The water is beautiful and we spotted many turtles and fish swimming right along side us. The golf carts and bikes made it easy and fun to get around the property and the staff continues to check in to make sure your stay is going smoothly. Finally the Cana Beach club had a wonderful pool and beach for us to enjoy as well. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway to the DR with first class service, select Tortuga Bay Puntacana."
