PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses in Cairo carry the accumulated weight of this particular stretch of Nile Corniche, where a mid-century slab tower has stood since 1959 as a fixed point in the city's skyline through revolution and reinvention alike. Originally built as the Nile Hilton — Egypt's first internationally branded hotel and a landmark of postwar modernist optimism — the building was designed by Welton Becket and Associates in a language of horizontal banding and repetitive fenestration that still defines its fifteen-storey profile today. After an extensive renovation, The Nile Ritz-Carlton Cairo took over the property in 2014, inheriting one of the most historically charged sites in Middle Eastern hospitality. The interiors, refreshed for the Ritz-Carlton era, work within a warm register of honey-toned walnut millwork, teal-patterned carpeting, and upholstered headboards framed by Islamic-lattice mirror panels — a palette that gestures toward Egyptological glamour without descending into pastiche. Vintage black-and-white photographs of Cairo hang above the beds, grounding the rooms in local memory rather than generic international luxury. The rooftop bar, visible in the images with its perforated metallic columns catching candlelight and an exuberant magenta chandelier overhead, delivers floor-to-ceiling views across the river toward Gezira Island. Below, the pool terrace is lined with date palms and white-cushioned sun loungers, the water a vivid turquoise rectangle that holds its composure against the city pressing in on every side. The hotel's 331 rooms retain the generous proportions that made the original Hilton a destination for heads of state and journalists covering a nation in perpetual transformation.

"We stayed twice - for two nights each stay - and were really impressed with this hotel. The location on the Nile is wonderful, the food at the restaurants was great and the rooms spacious and well appointed. What was really impressive was the great service from staff - front desk (thanks Matthew), room staff, restaurant staff and concierge. Ask for a room overlooking the river - the sunset from the room is amazing!"

"We looked forward to our visit at the Ritz Carlton having booked a deluxe nile view room with a balcony- we arrived late in the evening to check in and immediately the reception tried to upsell us to a suite room which we rejected. The reception then told us that our room was a smoking room which was not what we asked for and we showed the reception that even on the Ritz carlton website it never mentioned a smoking room. The reception told us all balcony rooms on the 3rd floor were smoking. There was no twin rooms with a balcony which we had prepaid for- we were so annoyed at the approach that we considered moving to another hotel even though late at night- we asked to speak with the duty manager who was equally disinterested and said he could offer us a free breakfast which we did not care about as we expected to pay for that! We asked to speak to the GM the following day and never saw him throughout the stay! Nor did he try to speak with us- That said we had a nile room with no balcony. It was average! The only highlight of the week trip were the breakfast team who were so friendly and professional including the ladies at the entrance who always had a welcoming smile! The pool area was another low point - the stone floors beside the pool were filthy and if you walked without shoes it was filthy- the pool ladies toilets were disgusting and smelt of stagnant water - it was truly horrible that we had to go back to our room to avoid the usage! Before attending this hotel - we had sought to use the spa and restaurants but because of how we were treated - we are out each night and went to a spa elsewhere at another hotel- All in all this hotel was a huge disappointment and I would never visit again! My reason for 2 stars is only because of the breakfast tream!"

"I arrived in Cairo in the morning very tired and hoped to get a room earlier for some rest. Hady at the check in desk, greeted me with a warm welcoming smile, asked how I was doing and right away checked the space availability and arranged get me a nice quiet room overlooking the Nile for early check in. He was also very helpful with other requests that I had. He made me feel like I was a VIP. Its a great way to start a trip feeling like you are an important guest at your hotel. The facilities are nice and luxurious with a feeling of opulence and grandeur. The Wi-Fi was very good and was able to multitask on the computer without any lags. As a competitive swimmer, I loved the huge pool. The breakfast was so amazing with such a variety of Egyptian foods that I was full the whole day. I am still salivating as I am writing this. All the staff was so friendly greeting me every time they passed by. They have staff that accommodated you to the room and show you the facilities of the hotel. A very nice personal touch to get you acclimated to a new County and hotel. Nardine gave me a tour of the hotel and I got to practice some of my rusty Arabic with her as she walked me through the facilities. She was very sweet and seemed to have a passion for what she does. When I checked out she came over to me and presented me with gift bag including a printed list of Arabic words in a presentation folder for my study and review and challenged me to an exam the next time I came. This was very touching and emotional and I was sad to leave that day. Shukran, Hady and Nardine and the Ritz Cairo for starting my vacation in Egypt at such a high note."
