PB hotel design editorial

El Gouna itself is the starting point for understanding The Chedi El Gouna — a private resort town on Egypt's Red Sea coast that was conceived from scratch by Egyptian developer Samih Sawiris in the early 1990s, its low-rise architecture drawing on Nubian and Upper Egyptian vernacular forms to create something that felt rooted rather than imported. The Chedi arrived within that framework as GHM's contribution to the destination, its campus of warm terracotta and sandy ochre volumes spreading across a lagoon-fronting site in a language that echoes the town's own architectural DNA: flat roofs edged with crenellated parapets, domed pavilions, arched colonnades, and date palms threaded through the compound in patterns that soften the boundary between building and garden. The interiors take a sharper, more contemporary line than the exterior might suggest. Guestrooms are finished in pale limestone tile and cream plaster, furnished with linen-upholstered beds, circular walnut side tables, and tripod-legged floor lamps — a restrained Scandi-inflected vocabulary that lets the vintage black-and-white photography of Egyptian landscapes, camels, and pyramid building do the atmospheric work on the walls. The rooftop restaurant pushes further still: timber columns wrapped in warm-toned cladding support a canvas pergola structure over rope-woven armchairs and polished concrete floors, the whole terrace calibrated to perform at dusk, when the Red Sea dissolves into a darkening horizon beyond the balustrade.

"High level of customer service! The hotel and location are wonderful, but the staff definitely make staying at this hotel the highlight. The ladies in the spa were always making sure we were comfortable. Khaled Mohamed at the front desk helped my husband plan a birthday surprise for me, and Hassum helped to decorate and make sure the room was perfect for us. The first night, our neighbours were up partying until 4:30am.. We had to get security involved as when other guests request they be quiet, they just became louder. Luckily once security was called they handled the situation, and the next morning offered to upgrade us to a beachfront room."

"I am currently staying at The Chedi El Gouna and unfortunately my experience has been very disappointing, especially considering this is marketed as a 5-star luxury hotel. The hotel appears to be fully booked, yet they continue to allow large numbers of external day-use guests. As a result, hotel residents — who are paying close to 100K for their stay — cannot even find available sunbeds or quiet spaces to relax around the pool areas. What is even more frustrating is the complete lack of supervision and management around the pools. There are unsupervised children constantly yelling, splashing water at other guests, and creating a very loud and chaotic atmosphere. At one point, children even brought jellyfish from the beach into the swimming pool, which was honestly unbelievable and should never happen at a property of this standard. Despite the ongoing disturbance, there is little to no visible intervention from hotel staff to maintain order or preserve a peaceful environment. This experience feels far from luxurious, relaxing, or exclusive — which is exactly what guests expect when booking a stay at a property of this level and price point. I truly hope management reconsiders the day-use policy and improves pool supervision to ensure hotel guests receive the quality of experience they are paying for."

"We had a truly wonderful family stay at The Chedi El Gouna. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt calm, refined, and exceptionally well curated. As a family with my wife and daughter, we deeply appreciated the atmosphere, the beautiful setting, the attention to detail, and the sense of genuine hospitality throughout our stay. A special thank you to Nancy at reception, who made our arrival seamless and welcoming with warmth and professionalism. First impressions matter, and she set the tone perfectly. Maged deserves special recognition as well for his outstanding service at both The Beach House and Nihon. His attentiveness, friendliness, and natural ability to make guests feel looked after elevated our dining experiences significantly. And a heartfelt thank you to Christine, Guest Relations Supervisor, whose exceptional guest handling skills were genuinely impressive. Her professionalism, care, and ability to anticipate and respond to guest needs made a lasting impression. She represents the very best of hospitality. The Chedi has managed to create something special: luxury that feels effortless, elegant, and genuinely warm rather than formal or distant. We left with beautiful family memories and would gladly return. Highly recommended for families seeking a refined and memorable escape in El Gouna."
