PB hotel design editorial

Raised from reclaimed stone, salvaged mashrabiyya screens, and antique doors gathered from historic buildings across the Middle East, Al Moudira Hotel took shape on the West Bank of Luxor as something closer to an act of passionate archaeology than conventional hotel-making. Architect Olivier Sednaoui conceived the low-rise structure as a honeycomb of ten courtyards spread across ten hectares of palmed desert, its exterior announcing itself through horseshoe arches, carved plasterwork friezes, and terracotta domes that catch the late afternoon light in the photographs here with particular warmth. Founder and interior designer Zeina Aboukheir personally curated every one of the 54 individually conceived rooms and suites, with decorative murals by Lebanese artist Mario Dahab unfolding across curved walls — trompe-l'oeil palm oases glimpsed through painted archways, fresco borders running beneath vaulted ceilings in ochre and dusty rose. The interiors move fluidly between Syrian, Egyptian, and Ottoman sources without settling into any single period or provenance. Green-veined columns of marmorino plaster frame a bedroom suite beneath a coffered dome painted in geometric yellow and lilac; hand-painted zellige-style cement tiles cover the floors throughout; a dark-wood bar fitted with Thonet stools sits beneath walls of gilded arabesque ornament in the restaurant, the whole room feeling like a colonial-era salon reconstituted from memory. Outside, a long marble-edged pool extends into a date palm grove, the surrounding cabanas draped in white linen, the scale of the landscape making clear that this property was built to feel like a village discovered, not a hotel arrived at.

"I’ve done quite a bit of traveling in my life, nothing prepared me for the beauty of Luxor. The antiquity’s were beyond anything I’d ever experienced. I could go on and on about the temples and sites ,but the thing that made my trip truly wonderful, was my stay at Al Moudira. The hotel is beautiful! And the smallest design details are so well executed, from the colors for the walls to the furnishings and stained glass windows. I’m a lover of aesthetics and great design, this place did not disappoint. The staff was so kind and attentive. They organized wonderful tours with the most knowledgeable guides. I felt so well cared for. I was there long enough to sample all the restaurants, they were all equally good and unique from each other. And the aestheticians in the spa were top-notch. I plan on returning to Al Moudira with my family and friends again and again. This trip was life-changing."

"The Al Moudira transported us into a different world of timeless charm and sophisticated with its high quality service and friendly staff where nothing is too much trouble. Situated on the West Bank in Luxor it is a natural oasis of relaxation with amazing food, particularly the Kitchen Garden where everything comes from the hotel farm and even the table crockery and glass is made on site! Every suite is unique and there are so many different places to enjoy, pause and reflect. One of the most amazing places we have ever visited, just pure elegant with natural charm - thank you to everyone and for the delicious cake for my birthday. It was truly a love at first sight experience. ꨄ︎"

"This was one of, if not the most memorable hotel stays we have had in many years of travel. Perfectly located on Luxor’s West Bank, Al Moudira is an oasis of tranquility and beauty. We stayed for three nights and organized our visit to the Valley of the Kings through the hotel, which was seamless and very well arranged. As a same-sex couple, we were initially a little unsure about how comfortable we would feel traveling in a country as conservative as Egypt. However, at Al Moudira we felt completely welcome, relaxed, and respected at all times. The hotel has a very international and open-minded atmosphere, with what we would describe as very Western standards in this regard. Our afternoons were mostly spent by the pool or discovering the different restaurants on the property, each one better than the last. One of the highlights of our stay was spending time exploring the farm, visiting the pottery workshop, and talking to the many young people working there. The hotel is involved in several social projects that help the local community benefit from tourism in the region, which made the experience feel even more special and meaningful. The Al Moudira Farm Kitchen is a remarkable project, farm-to-table concept led by Gioconda Scott, whom we had the pleasure of meeting personally. You can really feel the passion and care behind the entire place. The rooms are huge, beautifully decorated, and full of character. One night, we woke up in the middle of the night because water was leaking from the ceiling onto the bed. These things can happen anywhere. What really impressed us was how the hotel handled the situation. We called reception, and within minutes the staff had arranged another room for us , an even better one! In the end, we were laughing together with the staff about the situation while they efficiently solved the problem. For me, true good service are not only about when everything runs perfectly, but especially about how a place handles a small crisis and Al Moudira handled it very well. I would honestly fly back to Luxor just to stay there again."
