PB hotel design editorial

Red brick Dutch-gabled facades rising from immaculate Berkshire parkland, with giant sequoias standing sentinel at the lawn's edge — this is the architectural register that Fairmont Windsor Park established when it opened in 2021, a purpose-built country house hotel designed to feel as though it had stood for a century at the edge of Windsor Great Park. The building's stepped gables, white stone quoins, and slate-grey mansard rooflines draw from the Jacobethan tradition with enough conviction to avoid pastiche, set across 39 acres and housing 229 rooms and suites arranged across wings that step back from a central entrance portico framed by a glazed canopy. The interiors, designed by GA Design, sustain a dialogue between the building's Edwardian country house vocabulary and a quieter contemporary sensibility. Guest rooms carry gold-ground blossom wallcoverings — some panels rising to the ceiling in a single unbroken field — with upholstered headboards in pale linen and wing chairs in taupe leather set against herringbone carpet. Attic rooms gain particular character from circular dormer windows framing treetop views, while the restaurant deploys a darker mood: a storm-painted ceiling, wrought-iron chandelier rings hung with crystal, and chairs upholstered in bird-of-paradise jacquard placed at marble-topped tables. The spa pools are finished in pale Calacatta marble, with lattice screens backlit in cherry blossom pink, giving the lower level a calm formality that sits comfortably beneath the Jacobethan extravagance above.

"We only stayed overnight as part of a tour, and did not use any amenities, but the hotel was lovely, with an excellent breakfast lay-out as well. Be advised there are much less expensive places to stay if you just want to overnight before going to the airport"

"Just back from 2 night stay. Same trip last year and 2 nights stay then too. Last year, I had to move rooms because air con wasn't working. My early breakfast in the room didn't arrive either. Was promised by the hotel these were blips in their service... This time, £550 per night for bed and breakfast. Had to move rooms again on arrival. A garden party with a live band ruining any chance of sleep. Hotel was informed that I needed an early check-out on second day and would like breakfast in room as restaurant wouldn' t be open. Not a problem. They didn't tell me that breakfast in the room was an additional charge. £37 for a morning omelette. I was playing golf in Sunningdale Golf Club. I asked the hotel to book me a taxis. My return trip in an Uber cost £11. My trip to the golf club, £55. When I queried it with the taxis driver, he said the hotel set the price. On check-out the bill was incorrect. I was charge for a gratuity that I didn't give. There is already a 12.5% service charge on all bills. Despite my protestations, the staff member at checkout played dumb. I could wait for her manager, but that might be a while. My taxis to the airport was waiting.... I've never written a review, but felt compelled this time. No-one enjoys being fleeced"

"Unfortunately our car was involved in a hit and run whilst parked in the hotel car park and, despite the security team being genuinely excellent and doing everything they could to assist, there was ultimately no practical means of recovery. What was particularly surprising was that, despite there being entry/exit barriers and a manned entrance, there was no ANPR system in place to identify vehicles. As a result, we had no meaningful evidence available to pursue the matter through legal channels. I would strongly encourage anyone parking here, particularly overnight, to be mindful of this risk. I do want to emphasise again that the security team were fantastic throughout and tried their best to help. My disappointment was unfortunately with the follow-up. The hotel manager called once following my request, however I had to rearrange the call, and despite subsequently contacting the hotel and requesting a callback on at least three separate occasions, I never received any further response. Given the circumstances, I had hoped for better communication and support."

"A stunning hotel that is very clean and smells lovely . Beautiful gardens and in a great location . Loved the food in the Italian restaurant and the food overall was excellent apart from maybe the breakfast which was very standard . However as with most 5 star hotels these days it lacks the personal touch . The waiters are on you in a shot once you finish your drink but do not make an effort to have a conversation with you . Would be helpful to have biscuits in the room as lots of people need to take tablets first or last thing. The rooms are lovely but so hot with limited opening on the windows . We were particularly disappointed that after paying for breakfast in our room package the wife fell ill and we were charged again to have it in our room . Surely just a charge for room service would have been sufficient. A shame it is run too much as a business as the hotel is stunning"

"I’m currently at Fairmont Windsor Park and honestly, this place has exceeded every expectation. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the level of care and attention that goes into every detail of the experience. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning — elegant, peaceful, and beautifully designed — but what truly sets it apart are the incredible grounds. They’re perfectly maintained and offer such a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for a drink, enjoying a meal, or simply taking in the surroundings, it’s a spectacular setting that makes you want to stay all day. What really made my visit unforgettable, though, was the staff. Every single person has been warm, professional, and genuinely attentive. A special thank you to Gagan Sharma, the General Manager, who took the time to personally come and speak with me — that level of care and leadership really shows throughout the entire team. And a huge thank you to Amir, who looked after me and provided exceptional service. His attention, professionalism, and friendliness made a big difference to my experience, and I’m truly grateful. This is more than just a hotel — it’s an experience. If you’re anywhere near Windsor, this is an absolute must-visit. Whether for a stay, a meal, or even just to enjoy the beautiful grounds, you won’t be disappointed."
