PB hotel design editorial

Red brick Dutch-gabled facades rising from immaculate Berkshire parkland, with giant sequoias standing sentinel at the lawn's edge — this is the architectural register that Fairmont Windsor Park established when it opened in 2021, a purpose-built country house hotel designed to feel as though it had stood for a century at the edge of Windsor Great Park. The building's stepped gables, white stone quoins, and slate-grey mansard rooflines draw from the Jacobethan tradition with enough conviction to avoid pastiche, set across 39 acres and housing 229 rooms and suites arranged across wings that step back from a central entrance portico framed by a glazed canopy. The interiors, designed by GA Design, sustain a dialogue between the building's Edwardian country house vocabulary and a quieter contemporary sensibility. Guest rooms carry gold-ground blossom wallcoverings — some panels rising to the ceiling in a single unbroken field — with upholstered headboards in pale linen and wing chairs in taupe leather set against herringbone carpet. Attic rooms gain particular character from circular dormer windows framing treetop views, while the restaurant deploys a darker mood: a storm-painted ceiling, wrought-iron chandelier rings hung with crystal, and chairs upholstered in bird-of-paradise jacquard placed at marble-topped tables. The spa pools are finished in pale Calacatta marble, with lattice screens backlit in cherry blossom pink, giving the lower level a calm formality that sits comfortably beneath the Jacobethan extravagance above.

"Our stay started with a warm and welcoming smile from Sharmila who greeted us as we arrived and escorted us to a smooth check-in and then to our fabulous Garden Suite. The whole stay was wonderful and relaxing, especially the spa treatments from Petra and Amie, which we enjoyed in the Salutaris Suite. Highly recommend this experience as an addition to your stay. All the members of staff are so friendly and welcoming, they truly are the reason we always have a wonderful experience at this amazing hotel. Huge heart felt thank you to Joanna, Gagan and the entire team. We are very much looking forward to our next stay. I highly recommend this hotel for couples, families and groups, do not hesitate to book, you will have a fabulous time and experience hospitality of the highest level."

"We recently enjoyed the morning access spa experience at Fairmont Windsor Park, and it was absolutely wonderful. We began with cryotherapy. All the gear was provided and the process was clearly explained, which made us feel completely comfortable and at ease. After that, we explored the spa facilities and were so impressed. We loved the Himalayan salt room, steam room, sauna, and the outdoor heated pool. The heated beds in the main pool were incredibly relaxing, but my personal favourite had to be the booth-like pods where you could lie back and truly switch off. The afternoon tea was also excellent and the perfect way to round off our visit. It was made even more special by our lovely waitress, Sweety, who was so attentive and accommodating with our dietary requirements. She regularly checked in to see if we were okay or needed any top-ups, which we really appreciated."

"I was going to give this review on checkout at the hotel but I was never asked how may stay was. Let’s start with the good things about the hotel, the building is lovely & the rooms of the hotel are very elegantly decorated. They also decorated the room nice as it was our anniversary. The rest of the hotel was unfortunately nowhere near a 5* level. We booked a spa day & massage and prior to the massage I told the masseuse I had a bad shoulder so don’t massage that area. Within 5 minutes of the massage she deep massaged the exact area I told them not to resulting in significant swelling to the shoulder area. When I got annoyed & complained she just shrugged it off ,continued & then did it again! I was in such pain & so annoyed. After the massage we went to the pool area & was expecting a relaxing time by the pool. This however was the furthest thing from it. The pool was literally packed to the max with families constantly and there was actually no room to even get in the pool. This went on all day & was like being in a hotel pool in a 2* Benidorm hotel with crowds coming in for 1 hour slots pushing the pool area to full capacity. It felt like a local leisure centre instead of a luxury spa. Some of the heated loungers by the pool area were not working as well, which was a shame as waited an hour to use them. The food at the hotel was the biggest let down. We ate in the Italian restaurant & the octopus was over cooked & hard. The monkfish was tasteless. They tried to claim it’s ‘fine dining’ but in reality it’s low quality , badly cooked meats/fish with fine dining portion sizes. The waitress had no clue about service & looked like she had never done the job before. It was like speaking to a robot with no personality who also had no understanding of the menu or hospitality (yet alone fine dining). I know staff aren’t easy to find these days but the management was just awful. The breakfast was just as laughable as the dinner. When we went down in the morning we were waiting to be seated by the host & he was just standing around starring at the wall like he had no idea what he’s meant to do our say. We had to give him some pointers & said ‘do you want our room number’ to at least get us seated. The food at breakfast was definitely the worst experience. The eggs Benedict tasted like a bowl of vinegar and the premier inns buffet breakfast options looked gourmet compared to the terrible breakfast they were serving. I had one bite of the scrambled eggs & threw it away as it had egg shell in it. Overall, this is the worst so called ‘5 star’ hotel I have ever seen. From the food ,to the spa & service, I have never seen anything like it. Even checking out there wasn’t even a ‘how was your stay’, or even a smile. Overall , just a terribly managed mess of a hotel that I was glad to see the back off. Just one final note, we paid nearly £1000 for the night with our dinner! I could have had a better experience at a Premier Inn!"
