PB hotel design editorial

A seventeenth-century Cotswolds farmhouse, its honey-coloured oolitic limestone warmed further by the low angle of evening light, provides the structural heart of Dormy House Hotel — though the property has expanded well beyond its agricultural origins into a 38-room retreat whose barn conversions and contemporary spa additions sit in careful conversation with the original building. The farmstead character is most legible from the drive, where a copper lantern mounted on rough-hewn stone gateposts signals the transition from the Broadway countryside into something more considered. Inside, the interiors were reimagined by Grzywinski+Pons, the New York and London practice, whose approach across the guest rooms keeps the drama of exposed apex roof trusses and vaulted ceilings as the primary architectural statement, then layers in mid-century and global references beneath them — a patterned blue headboard wall in Portuguese tile-print fabric here, a cluster of sunburst rattan mirrors there, orange ceramic table lamps against whitewashed rafters. The restaurant, called Potager, moves in a livelier register: bird-motif wallpaper by a Fornasetti-adjacent sensibility, globe pendant lights on brass drops, and curved upholstered banquettes that give the limestone-walled dining room the atmosphere of a London neighbourhood brasserie transplanted into the Cotswold hills. Beneath it all, the spa descends into a contemporary lower level finished in pale travertine and grey stone, the heated pool ringed with white pebbles and gold pendant lights — a cleanly modern counterweight to all that agricultural vernacular above.

"I wouldn’t advise staying here with kids. I found the staff cold towards us and completely ignored our children like they were invisible. Reception staff can barely smile and give an air of pretentiousness. It was particularly bad at dinner, I didn’t see one smile or ounce of friendliness from the waiters. They all seemed to look like they hated their job. The fire alarm went off one night at 1am, it was ringing loudly in every room and in the hallways. My husband went down to see and he could smell smoke, there was a man there that said the problem had been rectified. In the morning no one at the hotel even mentioned the alarm had gone off. No one at reception or breakfast and there was no note posted to apologise. It was really odd. Another odd thing was they don’t hand you a bill after you eat at the bar or restaurant so you never know how much you spent (also means you can’t tip them which might be why everyone looks so disgruntled!), they just put it on your room. You have to explicitly ask to have the bill and even then they look at you perplexed as to why you want it. The pool area does not have enough seats. We never got a seat. For the price charged it was overall a highly disappointing experience. Positives: - There were 2 people that were very friendly towards us; the young woman who was blonde and slim that worked on reception, she seemed to only be there on one day during our stay. The other person was the lady at breakfast with short hair. She was really lovely and very warm. - Housekeeping kept the room clean and to a high standard."

"My daughter and I have just spent a night at Dormy house. What a beautiful hotel and spa! We had such a warm welcome, From professional hard-working staff. Everyone had a ready smile and it was a beautiful experience from beginning to end. The spa is beautifully clean, warm with plenty of space. My daughter announced that her facial was the best she had ever had! Our room was very comfortable clean with gorgeous toiletries. The beds were seriously cosy and comfy. Our evening meal was delicious and could not fault it as was our breakfast. We will definitely be returning, what a special time, well done everyone you’re doing a fantastic job! X"

"We visited Dormy House for dinner recently, on a very cold damp evening. As soon as you enter you are greeted by friendly staff and many sitting rooms all beautifully decorated and all with roaring real fires. The restaurant is very cosy and comfortable and the food was beautiful. It was lovely to meet a waiter who used to work in another hotel that we go to, so it was good to catch up. I would definitely recommend Dormy House as every time we go it is consistently good."
