PB hotel design editorial

Dogmersfield Park, a Queen Anne mansion dating to the early eighteenth century set within 500 acres of Hampshire parkland, carries the kind of provenance that hotel developers rarely find and almost never deserve. Henry VIII used the estate to meet Catherine of Aragon; by the time Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire arrived here in 2006, the warm red-brick facade — three storeys of sash windows, stone dressings, and Classical pediment — had already absorbed three centuries of English aristocratic life. The conversion preserved the architectural bones with care, and the images confirm the approach: panelled reception rooms retain their Georgian proportions while the interiors bring a layered, colourful eclecticism that avoids both reverence and pastiche. Guest rooms move between sage-green panelling with terracotta velvet sofas and mustard silk curtains, and quieter grey schemes where oversized fabric headboards — one printed with a blue-and-white botanical toile — carry most of the decorative weight. Antique bobbin-turned nightstands and patterned wool carpets with a faded-garden motif run through both registers, giving the rooms a continuity that feels assembled rather than specified. The bar is darker in temper: herringbone oak floors, green leather counter stools, and a warm stone bartop beneath steel-and-brass shelving. The spa pavilion, a later addition, takes a different architectural register entirely — a barrel-vaulted glass roof spanning a dark-tiled lap pool that at night mirrors the steel-blue glazing above, the whole space closer in feeling to a Victorian glasshouse than a conventional hotel leisure facility.

"I have just checked in. The service has been horrendous and I was given a room with an absolutely horrible view despite paying more than GBP 2,000 a night. This is honestly insulting. Completely unacceptable for a property at this price point and nowhere near the standard you claim to offer. I will never visit this place again."

"Just wanted to recognize how lovely I’ve been treated by Clara, the assistant front office manager. Over the last couple of year Four Seasons has truly upped their game and that’s thanks to having people like Clara as part of their team."

"We stayed, a couple, for two nights, and it was a hugely disappointing stay. Whilst the room and breakfast were what you’d expect of Four Seasons, sadly everything else was a poor imitation of the Four Seasons brand. I say this for a number of reasons: - the restaurant was loud and it’s clear it’s catering for families, not couples. - I had a very expensive ribeye steak that was truly awful. - a 5-star hotel should feel welcoming and luxurious: this hotel has some serious issues in this regard: (1) the swimming pool has the feel of a public swimming pool with hardly any space to relax; (2) the bar has no atmosphere, rather it feels likes it’s an afterthought. After one dreadful whisky sour, we gave cocktails a wide berth! (3) one of the main corridors at the entrance was lined up with baggage trolleys, like walking through a storage room!! I suppose it did set the standard for the whole stay."

"We are currently staying at the Four Seasons Hampshire. I am a seasoned traveller in my late forties who has stayed in five star hotels all over the global. Four seasons Hampshire was fabulous. Driving up the incredible sweeping driveway to a warm greeting at the front desk. We got a room upgrade for a family birthday and we were beyond delighted. Personalised messages on arrival and an array of cake and sweet treats delivered to our room to celebrate. This hotel has staff from over 50 countries and they are all very kind and helpful. Hospitality was faultless. The hotel has over 130 rooms so it was bigger than I thought it would be. We really felt pampered from day one. My parents said the pizza at la Terezza was the best pizza of their life. We had a tasty indian meal at Wild Carrot. We spent the afternoon at the kids pool and spa. My children loved the water slide and the adult pool was lovely and warm. We also had a walk around the extensive grounds. The highlight of the trip was celeb spotting at Wild Carrot. We will be returning over the summer. Thank you Four Seasons Hampshire for an exceptional weekend."

"Magnificent hotel on every level. The staff here are extremely helpful and friendly they could not do enough for us. The cleanliness of the hotel is 100% Fantastic housekeeping service. All the restaurant food was top notch as were the staff. The scenery and kids pool and places for walking were brilliant . This hotel is very child friendly. Valet service was first class. As we left the front office manager came out his name is Andrei and he was exceedingly warm. Well done Four Seasons we think this is the best family friendly luxury hotel in the UK. Thank you!"
