PB hotel design editorial

A Georgian country house in Hertfordshire that once served as the private estate of the Earls of Clarendon, the building at the heart of The Grove carries three centuries of accumulation before a single guest checked in. The original red-brick mansion dates to the early eighteenth century, and its conversion into a 227-room hotel — completed in 2003 — required a substantial new wing addition that architect Peter Glynn Smith designed to extend the property without overwhelming it. The result holds the tension between heritage fabric and contemporary volume more gracefully than most country house conversions manage. Fox Linton Associates handled the interiors, and the approach they took threads a contemporary sensibility through rooms that could easily have defaulted to chintz and hunting prints. The guestrooms visible in the images work in warm neutrals — pale oatmeal carpet with a wave-weave pattern, brass swing-arm reading lamps, deep velvet armchairs in moss green or burgundy — anchored by large-format textile artworks above each bed, their abstracted figurative marks giving each room a gallery-adjacent quality that lifts the scheme well above country-house convention. The restaurant, flooded with light through full-height steel-framed glazing and animated by amber-tinted mirror panels and sculptural leaf-form pendant lights, shares that same instinct for restraint pushed just far enough toward character. Outside, the walled garden's steel-and-glass orangery and the Kyle Phillips-designed championship golf course spreading across the Hertfordshire countryside complete a property that earns its reputation as London's most convincing rural escape within the M25.

"The Grove is a great hotel, but I do question sometimes their approach on a couple of things. Take the lovely Sequoia Spa girls. They appear to have to go round to ask people if they want massages/treatments. It doesn’t seem something they want to do comfortably and is the sort of thing I would associate more with a beach in Torremolinos than a five-star hotel. Twice on consecutive days in the Walled Garden - an area for apparent peace and seclusion - I’ve been approached this way. I can see the gazebo, I’ve witnessed the marketing. These girls are great at what they do and very lovely, so surely a sign or leaflet in the room would be a better marketing route for all concerned?"

"The grounds and setting at The Grove are absolutely beautiful, a really peaceful property with so much space to explore and a great range of activities available across the estate. It’s easy to see why so many people enjoy visiting here for a relaxing escape. I also had a lovely meal at the Glasshouse restaurant and especially recommend the duck salad, which was excellent. Although my overall stay was a mixed experience, I really wanted to highlight two employees who genuinely stood out. Nathan on the door gave such a warm, charismatic welcome on arrival and immediately created a positive first impression of the hotel. Gabriel from concierge was also fantastic, professional, friendly, and genuinely helpful with a smile. The service from both of them reflected the level of hospitality you would hope to experience consistently at a property like this."

"Just a luxurious room, with lovely touches. Really tasty food and great selection at breakfast. Did a Sushi making course, really enjoyed. Very enjoyable stay."

"Honestly one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve ever had, especially for a so-called 5-star hotel. From the moment I arrived at the reception, the welcome was absolutely horrible. After spending so much money for what was meant to be a relaxing getaway, I was left standing at reception for over 45 minutes because of a deposit issue before I could even check into my room. I had travelled from far away, I was exhausted, frustrated, and genuinely overwhelmed. At one point,I almost cried from the stress and lack of empathy shown. What shocked me the most was the complete lack of hospitality and understanding from the staff. For the amount charged, I expected professionalism, warmth, and better customer service — not to be made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I even requested to shorten my stay and asked for a refund for the remaining nights because the experience had already ruined the entire mood for me from the very beginning. For anyone considering booking here, please think twice. Luxury is not just about the building or the price tag — it’s about how guests are treated. Sadly, this place failed terribly in that aspect."

"We absolutely loved our stay at the Grove as a family of 3 (2 adults and a toddler). We came here for the first time last summer and decided to return for the may bank holiday / early birthday celebration. It's truly fun for the whole family. Amazing kids facilities and kids club which our daughter loved. While she was at the kids club we could relax at the beach with some drinks. Our daughter also absolutely loved the toys and the tipi set up in our room and the mini landis experience. Afternoon tea at the Lounge was lovely and the buffet at Glasshouse is phenomenal. Would highly recommend for a relaxing family stay!"
