PB hotel design editorial

A Georgian country house in Hertfordshire that once served as the private estate of the Earls of Clarendon, the building at the heart of The Grove carries three centuries of accumulation before a single guest checked in. The original red-brick mansion dates to the early eighteenth century, and its conversion into a 227-room hotel — completed in 2003 — required a substantial new wing addition that architect Peter Glynn Smith designed to extend the property without overwhelming it. The result holds the tension between heritage fabric and contemporary volume more gracefully than most country house conversions manage. Fox Linton Associates handled the interiors, and the approach they took threads a contemporary sensibility through rooms that could easily have defaulted to chintz and hunting prints. The guestrooms visible in the images work in warm neutrals — pale oatmeal carpet with a wave-weave pattern, brass swing-arm reading lamps, deep velvet armchairs in moss green or burgundy — anchored by large-format textile artworks above each bed, their abstracted figurative marks giving each room a gallery-adjacent quality that lifts the scheme well above country-house convention. The restaurant, flooded with light through full-height steel-framed glazing and animated by amber-tinted mirror panels and sculptural leaf-form pendant lights, shares that same instinct for restraint pushed just far enough toward character. Outside, the walled garden's steel-and-glass orangery and the Kyle Phillips-designed championship golf course spreading across the Hertfordshire countryside complete a property that earns its reputation as London's most convincing rural escape within the M25.

"What a fantastic experience! We stayed in the Grove Suite and it was absolutely lovely. Beautifully thought out, plenty of room, great amenities, with a gorgeous bath. The minibar was complementary and we also had some complementary ice cream. Spotlessly clean throughout, of course. Late check-out at 1pm was very much appreciated too. We had afternoon tea (it was the Charlotte Tilbury one) and that was superb. Plenty of tasty food, so much that we couldn't finish it all but they gave us a box to take it back to our room. All the staff in the restaurant were highly professional, friendly and helpful and the harpist added a lovely touch. In fact, all the staff throughout the hotel were amazing, from the moment a doorman took our bags from us to the lovely receptionist when we were checking out. Every single member of staff that we had dealings with was friendly, helpful and proactive. If anyone sees you looking even slightly lost, they leap up and take you to where you want to go. The bar is lovely too, with great cocktails and, again, attentive staff. Breakfast is outstanding, with different stations, like in an all-inclusive hotel. Everything you can think of is there and food is cooked for you, in front of you. One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time, worth going just for that. I would highly recommend this hotel, they've got it just right!"

"Fantastic family stay at the Grove! Excellent half term activities with the stand out favourite being the inflatable football sessions, pony rides and games tent. Wonderful staff, fabulous breakfast , an all round close to perfect hotel. One aspect id like to suggest is that there are family swim times in the spa pool. Currently kids cant use this pool and the kids pool is a bit basic. Id love to be able to enjoy the spa facilities with the children at some point even allocated hours would be a bonus, currently only 12+ years can join in the spa."

"Deluxe King Room - Garden view Spa - de stress massage / organic facial Restaurants- the Glasshouse (dinner) / The Stables (lunch) Came away for my wife’s 40th. Our stay was nothing short of exceptional. We chose the perfect escape package which included the above (bar lunch, with spabreaks). We have visited a huge range of hotels, in all price brackets all over the world and cannot thank The Grove staff enough for making our stay everything we hoped for from a top end British establishment and more. Really the best service I’ve encountered from everyone we met. Room Large, spotless, with a gorgeous view of the mansion, rolling fields, impeccable gardens and waterfall. With balcony. Roll top bath, shower can only be described as like standing under an African waterfall (wife has high standards!), 6ft wide bed, excellent wifi, streaming TV (Netflix etc), nespresso, fridge stocked with spirits and prosecco. Great hairdryer and iron. Even the shampoo bits etc were excellent. Food The Glasshouse Definitely the better option over the Stables for dinner if you’re comparing. Superb food from every corner of the globe. An issue with our booking time was calmly and quickly rectified by staff. The food really was exceptional. Tasty, plentiful and excellent choices for kids all mounted on LEGO! Even sushi for them. Breakfast was just as good, eggs benedict cooked fresh in front of you, lots of options. The Stables Lovely surroundings, good tasty food and not much more expensive than a gastropub. Excellent service. Ideal for lunch (if you’re going to the spa get a light bite in there before dinner as the stables isn’t really for a ‘light’ lunch). Spa Massage was excellent as expected, my wife has said the facial has ruined all future facials for her as it was that brilliant. Both were 80mins. Time well spent. Outside there is a tent with arcades and Sega Rally (!), pinball machines for the kids (and grown ups following an after dinner walk). Roaring firepit. Lots of other restaurants inc indian and Greek. Plentiful parking (+valet if needed). The WhatsApp concierge is inspired and solved a number of little queries and bookings for us before arriving. We will return, possibly in the summer to make use of the outdoor pool and sun bed double bed loungers we saw."

"We have just returned from a wonderful few days at The Grove, for half term. We had a great stay. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed for us and our two children. Our children loved the pool, and we all enjoyed archery and a bike rides (renting bikes from the hotel). We also managed to make use of the gym and spa. The restaurants were a real highlight and service was very good throughout. Would highly recommend for a family getaway. It’s quite expensive, which we knew, and were prepared for. I wonder if there could be a slightly lower priced restaurant option to balance the other options. It was a bit of a shame we couldn’t use the main pool as our ten year old was too young. But this is a minor quibble."

"Came in for a birthday meal, the service was flawless from start to finish. A great selection of food, warming customer service and even a happy birthday. A very stylish venue with an experience to match 5* A special thanks to Connie our waitress and Fred on the pasta section, they both provided fantastic service and product knowledge. Didn’t catch the greeters name by the bar who guided us to some welcoming drinks he also was fantastic. 100% worth a visit."
