PB hotel design editorial

A Georgian country house in Hertfordshire that once served as the private estate of the Earls of Clarendon, the building at the heart of The Grove carries three centuries of accumulation before a single guest checked in. The original red-brick mansion dates to the early eighteenth century, and its conversion into a 227-room hotel — completed in 2003 — required a substantial new wing addition that architect Peter Glynn Smith designed to extend the property without overwhelming it. The result holds the tension between heritage fabric and contemporary volume more gracefully than most country house conversions manage. Fox Linton Associates handled the interiors, and the approach they took threads a contemporary sensibility through rooms that could easily have defaulted to chintz and hunting prints. The guestrooms visible in the images work in warm neutrals — pale oatmeal carpet with a wave-weave pattern, brass swing-arm reading lamps, deep velvet armchairs in moss green or burgundy — anchored by large-format textile artworks above each bed, their abstracted figurative marks giving each room a gallery-adjacent quality that lifts the scheme well above country-house convention. The restaurant, flooded with light through full-height steel-framed glazing and animated by amber-tinted mirror panels and sculptural leaf-form pendant lights, shares that same instinct for restraint pushed just far enough toward character. Outside, the walled garden's steel-and-glass orangery and the Kyle Phillips-designed championship golf course spreading across the Hertfordshire countryside complete a property that earns its reputation as London's most convincing rural escape within the M25.

"Absolutely wonderful place to stay. The staff cannot do enough for you. It truly is a lovely experience. The grounds are picturesque. The food options are beautiful. The hotel itself is huge and it was a place we will be returning to without hesitation."

"We recently stayed at The Grove Hotel and unfortunately had a really disappointing experience. The air conditioning in our room wasn’t working at all — it was actually blowing out warm air. We reported it multiple times, and it appeared to be a wider issue across the hotel, but nothing was done to resolve it during our stay. What made it worse was the lack of response from the team. Despite raising it several times, there was no real sense of urgency or reassurance that anything was being done, which was incredibly frustrating. It made for a very uncomfortable night. The room was extremely hot, and the kids even felt unwell because of it. That’s not what you expect when staying somewhere like The Grove. For a hotel that positions itself as a premium venue with high-quality facilities, this was genuinely surprising and disappointing. We didn’t come here expecting to deal with something as basic as defective air conditioning. Overall, a very poor experience — especially given the reputation and price point"

"Had the best time celebrating a birthday and also Easter bank holiday at The Grove. The service is incredible from all of The Grove staff, they're extremely warm and inviting right from arrival and nothing is too much trouble. The extra touches really do make all the difference including the glass of bubbly on arrival at check in, the birthday chocolates in the room and even the extra complimentary water and chamomile flower tea on the turndown service. We enjoyed a few glasses of Laurent Perrier before our evening dinner buffet at the Glasshouse and we thoroughly enjoyed the attentive service from the bar staff as well as the Glasshouse restaurant staff who made our birthday celebration extra special. Thank you so much! We will be back very soon!"

"An overnight Birthday stay for the second year in a row. Had a lovely time, made even more special by the thoughtfulness of guest services. A special mention of Ben at reception, whose warmth and kindness made us feel very welcome."
