PB hotel design editorial

A white-rendered Regency villa set back from the Rothay river on the edge of Ambleside, the building that houses Rothay Manor was constructed around 1825 and carries the restrained symmetry of its period — a full-width first-floor balcony with wrought-iron balustrading, ranked sash windows with black-painted surrounds, and multiple chimneys suggesting the warren of reception rooms within. The surrounding mature woodland, visible in deep green behind the roofline, gives it the feeling of a private house that happened to become a hotel rather than a hospitality project imposed upon the landscape. The interiors maintain that domestic register throughout. The sitting room is papered in a full-repeat floral — William Morris in spirit if not strictly in attribution — with herringbone oak flooring, wing-back chairs in tobacco tweed, and a white marble fireplace dressed with a simple arched mirror. The dining room takes a quieter approach: sage-grey panelling, dark oak pedestal tables, leather and printed-fabric chairs, and a tiered glass chandelier that introduces just enough contemporary inflection without unsettling the room's Georgian proportions. Bedrooms vary in character between schemes — one wrapped in a blush scenic toile with a painted stone chimneypiece and dusty-pink velvet armchairs on castors, another in a Cole and Son-style botanical print with a painted four-poster and a tufted leather ottoman at its foot. Taken together, the effect is less country-house hotel formula than considered accumulation, each room assembled with genuine affection for English decorative tradition.

"Most beautiful hotel in the southern lakes, our room was stunning and all wishes met. The restaurant was off the scale good. Surely this deserves a Michelin star or two?! We were blown away by the quality and the service - and have no doubt that we will return. We can certainly see why this hotel is part of the Small Luxury Hotel group. The staff are exceptional - wholeheartedly recommend."

"The tasting menu paired with the wine was an exquisite experience. The service was excellent set in a beautifully set out restaurant. The waiting staff we attentive and well informed regarding the food, the sommelier was enthusiastic and clearly knows his wines. Then there was the food, each course was delicate and well balanced and fabulously presented and some of the dishes were presented by the Chefs themselves!! We had a fantastic experience and will definitely be going back when we are next in the lakes"

"We had an overnight stay here, in a Superior Room and had dinner in the Rowan Restaurant. The initial arrival took us somewhat by surprise as the satnav took us to the wrought iron gates which we presume were the original entrance but are now closed, we followed the road around passing the ‘deliveries only’ entrance and continued around to the property entrance - the reason this was a surprise was because we now realised that the property grounds which consists of the Manor House, The Pavilion ( newer building) and the car park are encircled by the A593 and whilst that road is no motorway it is audible from some of the rooms and definitely the balconies, which included ours. Not a problem just a surprise. Once we were parked up we checked and the whole process was done smoothly and efficiently. Shown to our room, which was lovely however when we entered we realised there was a ‘musty’ note. We don’t really know what was causing it but it stemmed from the bathroom (because once the bathroom door was closed the smell was not noticeable in the room) but the bathroom was immaculate and very well decorated looking recently refurbished with no sign of mould or damp, so we can only think that it was somehow caused by standing water in the pipes of the bath and shower. Dinner in Roman was enjoyable and we had a lovely evening. Breakfast the next morning was equally tasty. Overall an enjoyable night away."

"A two night stay for six people, for a ‘big’ birthday. A lovely hotel in a great location. The rooms were finished to a high standard, the public areas of the hotel were too which significantly added to the ambience. The meal in the restaurant was perhaps one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. My only slight grumble was that the front of house staff need slight improvement, both for conduct and appearance. We had two mistakes on our bill- please carefully check your invoice prior to paying! Overall a great stay for a special occasion- stay for dinner if you possibly can!"

"We have just returned from a 3 nts stay in a Superior Room. This was our first stay at Rothay Manor. The outstanding feature of this hotel is the staff. They are all so friendly, professional and willing to help at all times. We ate in the Rowan Restaurant for our evening meals. All meals superbly presented, made with the finest ingredients and local produce. Breakfast first class. The location of the hotel is ideal for a short walk into Ambleside. Just visit this hotel if you want a first class experience!"
