PB hotel design editorial

Beneath the living green walls that now cascade across its Berkeley Street facade, a former Holiday Inn has been reborn as something that feels closer to a woodland lodge than a Mayfair address. 1 Hotel Mayfair, which arrived in July 2023 as the brand's first European property, was shaped by Studio Moren working with shell and core architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, with interiors delivered by G.A Group alongside the SH Hotels & Resorts in-house design team. Roughly 80 percent of the original nine-storey structure was retained and reworked to meet BREEAM Excellent standards — an act of adaptive reuse that makes the sustainability agenda structural rather than decorative. The interiors carry that conviction through to every surface. Reclaimed Yorkshire stone dry walls anchor the lobby bar in something ancient and tactile, their rough coursework sitting against burnt-sienna leather sofas and large domed pendants in patinated iron. Guest rooms layer bleached oak panelling, woven rattan pendant shades, and shaggy natural-fibre rugs into a palette that reads somewhere between Nordic cabin and New England farmhouse. The restaurant's exposed timber beam ceiling, tufted banquette seating, and copper hood above an open hearth bring the same earthy register to a grander scale. The 200-year-old oak check-in desk and the 181 rooms throughout remind you this is Mayfair — the restraint is deliberate, the craft considered, and the nature genuinely embedded rather than gestural.

"Great Hotel, Great Location, Great Atmosphere…… very courteous and friendly staff. Facilities in room were very good."

"This was without doubt the best hotel I have stayed at in London by a long way. The site is perfectly placed for visiting sights and I cannot think of a friendlier hotel worldwide the staff were absolutely exceptional. I would recommend 1 Hotel to solo travellers, couples, families, business trips etc etc. It was not pretentious but made you feel special - I arrived home and am immediately trying to work out when we can return or venture to one of their sister sites. It was not cheap but I felt it was very good value compared to any other hotels I visit on my travels so worth every penny. Did not experience the restaurant but menu looked nice. The terrace room was luxurious and quiet for central London. All in all a brilliant stay and would recommend very highly"

"There are luxury hotels, and then there is 1 Hotel Mayfair. Every single stay reminds me why this place is so incredibly special. Somehow it manages to feel like a complete haven away from London while being right in the heart of it. The moment you walk through the doors, everything just slows down in the best possible way. The entire experience was perfection from start to finish; the kindness and genuineness of the team, the attentiveness, the atmosphere, the incredible housekeeping, the spa, the coffees, the music, the scent, the vibes… every detail feels thoughtful and effortless. What makes this hotel stand out most is how warm and natural the service feels. Nothing is forced, nothing feels scripted. The team genuinely cares, and you feel it in every interaction. A truly special place with truly special people. Already counting the days until I’m back!"

"We recently stayed at 1 Hotel Mayfair and overall had a great experience. The location is fantastic, the rooms are beautifully designed, and the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of the hotel are excellent. The property truly delivers on luxury, comfort, and style. However, if you are traveling for business or need reliable connectivity, there is one major issue worth noting: the WiFi. Throughout our stay, the internet connection consistently dropped every 1–2 minutes, often disconnecting for 10–15 seconds at a time. While that may sound minor, it made video calls, meetings, and any kind of remote work extremely difficult and frustrating. Unfortunately, cell phone reception in our room was also very poor, so tethering to mobile data was not a viable backup option. We ultimately had to leave the hotel in the evening and work from a nearby WeWork in order to take important business calls reliably. To the hotel’s credit, management was responsive and sent a very helpful IT specialist who genuinely tried to resolve the issue. Sadly, the problem persisted. It appears there may be a deeper issue with the network infrastructure - possibly related to firewall QoS/routing policies or their upstream internet provider. If you are visiting for leisure and don’t need dependable internet connectivity, this hotel is close to perfect and we would highly recommend it. But if you are traveling for work and require stable WiFi for calls and productivity, you may want to consider staying elsewhere until the connectivity issues are resolved. We experienced the same issue on 2 MacBooks, 2 iPhones, and 2 different iPads, so it wasn't a specific device issue, and it was consistent across all 6 devices. Hoping next trip this issue is sorted out, because the hotel is actually really nice."
