PB hotel design editorial

Curved horizontal fins of warm Portland stone wrap the upper floors of a mid-century tower at the southern edge of Hyde Park, a building whose sinuous roofline and Union flag mark it from the treeline as something between embassy and private club. That building is 45 Park Lane, opened in 2011 as the Dorchester Collection's second London address, with interiors by Thierry Despont — the New York-based architect who also shaped the restored Ritz Paris — working here in a register closer to 1930s Hollywood than to English country house tradition. The 56 rooms and suites are furnished with dark-stained walnut millwork, limestone-clad headboard walls, and geometric diamond-patterned rugs that borrow from the Deco vocabulary without quoting it literally. Black-and-white photography of Golden Age film stars hangs framed above the beds, giving each room the atmosphere of a well-edited private apartment. The bar carries that same lineage into darker, more intimate territory — lacquered mahogany, backlit slatted wood beneath the counter, red leather stools, and bold-checked stone flooring that anchors the room without competing with the warmth overhead. The spa, clearly updated since the hotel's opening, takes a different direction entirely: a lap pool flanked by teak ceiling battens and a large-scale botanical mosaic in soft greens and blush tones, the high-gloss ceiling reflecting the blue water below in a composition that sits somewhere between a Japanese bathhouse and a contemporary art installation.

"Having been born in Mayfair and still retaining a home here, one is seldom in need of using local hotels for the night. Finding myself in possession of a voucher from an auction last year for a one-night stay at 45 Park Lane, part of the Dorchester Collection, allowed me the opportunity to see what this newer property on Park Lane, in the shadow of the grand Dorchester hotel, where my grandparents celebrated almost every anniversary, could offer. A short ten-minute walk from my front door led me to the doorman, who greeted me warmly as I entered an elegant lobby that immediately felt calm and relaxing. The front desk was staffed by equally welcoming team members who instinctively know how to make guests feel at ease. From the moment of identifying who I was and throughout the remainder of my stay, I was always addressed by my name - a tradition most hotels abandoned long ago. I was escorted to my room, located on the 6th floor, overlooking the treetops of Hyde Park. The room was beautifully appointed, with a large sitting area away from the indulgent king-size bed, the coffee table piled with delectable treats. The bathroom is elegant, with a deep bath, a rain shower, a Toto toilet, and all the luxurious lotions one expects from a five-star property. Venturing to the pool, I was genuinely surprised to see a stunning 20-metre lap pool (as a member of the RAC Club, whose pool is hard to beat). An enjoyable 1km swim was made even more so by having the pool to myself. Heading back to my room, which has now been turned down, I relaxed with room service, which offers an interesting array of epicurean options, with Asian-inspired creations excellently executed. Sleep is easy to achieve because external noise from Park Lane is nonexistent. A morning swim prepared me for breakfast, which consisted of a green health concoction, beautifully crafted pastries and a scrumptious homemade granola. All of this can, of course, be offered by any five-star hotel, but what sets 45 Park Lane apart is the courtesy and professionalism of the dedicated team who ensure your every wish is catered for. As lunch was included in my auction item, I enjoyed their Sunday roast, showing off the best of British ingredients. 45 Park Lane is located on the edge of Hyde Park and is an easy stroll to Bond Street, Oxford Street, and Shepherd Market, as well as a lovely meander across the park to Knightsbridge. If a pool is important to you, then 45 Park Lane offers the longest pool of any hotel in the area. If superlative service is important to you, then 45 Park Lane delivers on every level."

"Our stay at 45 Park Lane was nothing short of extraordinary, an experience that truly redefines modern luxury in the heart of London. From the moment we arrived, every detail was curated with precision, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of refinement. What sets this hotel apart is not only its elegant design and prime location overlooking Hyde Park, but the exceptional calibre of its guest experience team. Alessia, in particular, was a standout, an absolute gem. Her responsiveness was unparalleled; no request ever felt too complex or too last-minute. She handled each inquiry with grace, efficiency, and genuine enthusiasm, ensuring that every aspect of our stay was seamless. It is rare to encounter someone so dedicated to exceeding expectations, and Alessia did so effortlessly. In fact, the level of service we received surpassed even some of the most renowned luxury hotels, including Cheval Blanc Paris. While many properties offer beautiful surroundings, few deliver such an elevated and personalized guest experience. At 45 Park Lane, service is not just attentive, it is intuitive, proactive, and deeply thoughtful. This hotel is, without question, a benchmark for excellence. We left feeling not only cared for, but genuinely valued as guests. A truly remarkable experience that we will not soon forget."

"45 Park Lane is 100% your spot. It honestly feels less like a massive hotel and more like the world’s most sophisticated private residence. I loved that it’s a smaller boutique hotel because it actually has a personality. While its "mother" property across the street is all about classic British tradition, 45 Park Lane is sleek, art-focused, and just feels vibrant. The staff are the real stars here—they manage to be incredibly attentive without being overbearing or stuffy. You get that top-tier service where they know your name, but the vibe is relaxed enough that you can actually kick back and breathe. The spa is a total hidden gem, too. For a boutique place, the facilities are surprisingly huge. There is a stunning 20-meter swimming pool that feels like an underground sanctuary, and since it’s open from 08:00 to 20:00, it’s perfect for a pre-breakfast lap or a wind-down swim after a long day. It’s peaceful, sparkling clean, and never felt crowded."

"First time staying and OMG, it’s stunning. From the moment you pull up, the service is faultless. Checking in was easy and our suite was perfection. The spa area is next level and the champagne just added to the top end feeling. This hotel is 10/10."
