PB hotel design editorial

Astet Studio's reinvention of a building most Londoners knew as Nobu Hotel Shoreditch is the central act of Aethos London Shoreditch, which opened in 2025 as a 164-room boutique hotel and members' club. Ben Adams Architects' original 2017 structure announces itself from the street in board-marked concrete, bronze detailing, and cantilevered steel fins that step back from the cobbled lane in a stacked geometry more Brutalist in spirit than the brick-and-mortar neighbourhood surrounding it. The Barcelona-based practice Astet Studio, founded by Ala Zreigat and Oscar Engroba, was brought in to transform the interior and chose warmth as the corrective to all that raw structure: terracotta upholstery, oak panelling, and brushed metals soften the exposed concrete soffits without obscuring them. The lobby presents the clearest expression of Astet's approach, with terrazzo floors, a large paper pendant of unmistakable midcentury lineage, and a reception desk finished in veined stone pulling the eye toward a lounge dense with timber-panelled walls and amber-toned rugs. Guest rooms carry the palette upstairs: low-slung platform beds sit beneath bare concrete ceilings, parquet flooring introduces grain against plaster, and globe pendants on brass tracks provide the warmth that the architecture deliberately withholds. Throughout, the firm's narrative draws on Shoreditch's layered identity as a place where industrial discipline and craft sensibility have long coexisted, and the interiors make that argument without overstating it.

"I had a wonderful experience at Mitsu, and a big part of that was thanks to Morgan Sky on reception. From the moment I arrived, she was warm, welcoming, and incredibly professional. She greeted everyone with a genuine smile, was attentive to every detail, and made the whole experience feel seamless."

"We stayed here for the weekend as we were attending a wedding near by. Overall, our stay was great. Room service was fab, the room itself was divine - super clean and spacious! It's in a GREAT location and we generally felt well looked after. My only negatives were the staff seemed a little unorganised when it came to collecting things that had been left for us with reception. It took more than one attempt to locate stuff - but we got there in the end! The staff were generally lovely - although I wouldn't say they went above and beyond to be helpful. We asked for water and the member of staff stopped herself halfway from rolling her eyes. I had to then call for room service to bring us some water 20 minutes later when it hadn't arrived - although we got the water, we didn't get the glasses we asked for to put the water in... Another member of staff told me in order to access the floor I needed (the bride's floor), I had to go down to reception and they would let me up, as opposed to just using her master key card to send me down one floor... And then we had someone vacuuming the hallway at 09:00 on a Sunday morning, which I could have definitely done without! I also HATE what hotels are doing nowadays, which is tell you at the reception desk, that there's an optional 5% service charge added to the room fee, in front of all the reception staff - so if you say no, because the service wasn't great - you feel like a bit of a douche. I would stay there again, but I don't think the service was 5*, for the price you're paying."
