PB hotel design editorial

Two cylindrical towers wrapped in vertical aluminium fins rise from the Southwark streetscape at the junction of Blackfriars Road and The Cut, their curved geometry placing the Bankside Hotel Autograph Collection in deliberate dialogue with the raw industrial grain of one of London's most rapidly transforming neighbourhoods. Architect Glenn Howells designed the 161-room property, which opened in 2017, with a podium volume clad in diamond-patterned white panelling that anchors the towers to street level — the same faceted surface visible from the rooftop terrace, where it forms a close backdrop to woven-rope lounge chairs and blue steel side tables set among planted birch trees and flowering perennials. The interiors, designed by Dexter Moren Associates with a deliberately South Bank sensibility, treat Brutalism as affection rather than provocation. Exposed concrete columns stand unsoftened in the suites, raw aggregate finishes carried through to coffered ceilings above walnut-framed platform beds dressed in striped throws and graphic scatter cushions. Framed photographs of local housing estates — yellow and grey council blocks shot at close range — hang above headboards as straight-faced tributes to the neighbourhood's architectural inheritance. The restaurant space doubles down on the period references: a geometric black-and-white tiled floor, a bar front clad in abstract curved marquetry panels, hanging wooden bead screens, and a loose constellation of industrial pendant lights overhead, the whole room landing somewhere between a 1960s members' club and a well-edited Borough Market side street.

"I cannot speak highly enough about this hotel! I have been privileged to travel around the world, stay in very nice hotels, but the staff at the Bankside took our experience to another level. They go above and beyond to make their guests feel welcome and at home. Nothing was ever too much trouble, they took their time assisting us with directions and made wonderful recommendations, all which were 100% on point! The hotel itself is in a great location, across the road is the thames River, walking distance to the London eye, great restaurants and many attractions. The rooms at the hotel are spotlessly clean and very comfortable, they have a great restaurant and bar, they serve an incredible breakfast, have a coffee bar, complementary water stations on each floor and many other great features. There is no doubt that we will stay at the Bankside again when we’re next in London! The staff there are truly an asset to Marriott!!"

"As one of Marriott’s top-tier Elite members, I spend a great deal of time in hotels across the world, and when I travel to London, Marriott's Bankside Hotel, Autograph Collection has become one of the few places that genuinely feels like a second home. What keeps me coming back is not just the quality of the rooms, which are always comfortable, well-maintained, and exactly what you want after long days, but the people. Service is what separates a good hotel from a memorable one, and this property gets that absolutely right. The team in the restaurant deserves special recognition. Over time, they have become more like family than hotel staff. Anastasiia and Yulia, both from Ukraine, are exceptional. Their warmth, professionalism, and genuine care create an atmosphere that is rare to find, especially for frequent travellers. They greet every guest with the deepest smiles and the warmest hearts, and they bring a level of kindness and humanity that stays with you long after checkout. They remember people, they make you feel seen, and they turn an ordinary breakfast or evening meal into something personal and welcoming. That consistency matters. When you travel often, familiar faces and authentic hospitality make all the difference. This hotel delivers that every single time. For anyone visiting London, especially frequent business travellers who value service as much as comfort, this is a property I would recommend without hesitation."

"This is my all time favourite hotel. Great location that enables me to get around London. I love to spend time in the Hotel as well. The library lounge (mezanine floor), is a great place to settle and think through your notes and get some reading done. Great selection of wines. Walking around the hotel and looking at the design and zany art is a pleasure. Going across to the Art room to meet with the Resident Artist and evaluate some of her work in progress. The rooms and the aesthetic is great. Your Front Desk team is absolutely awesome. We were welcomed with big smiles from Katerina Vilchek, Manuel, Richard, and the entire team, which set the tone right away. Despite arriving early, our rooms were ready, complete with special amenities—such a thoughtful touch. The warmth and hospitality we experienced are beyond words. A special thank you to Katerina for her professionalism and for going above and beyond to make our stay truly memorable. She didn’t just do her job—she did it with heart, and that made her uniquely amazing. A big shout-out as well to the restaurant team—absolutely brilliant! The food was amazing. Thank you, Chef! Thank you Each and everyone .... With all that style and inspiration I did a lot of shopping to accentuate style and sense . Thank you all—and by the way, your hotel truly exudes beauty in both art and soul"

"Our stay at Bankside Hotel was truly special from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed—the whole place has such a relaxed, inviting atmosphere while still feeling beautifully stylish and thoughtfully put together. The rooms are gorgeous and so comfortable, with little touches that make a big difference. The beds are incredibly cosy, the décor is elegant without being over the top, and everything felt spotless and well looked after. It was the kind of space you genuinely look forward to coming back to at the end of the day. One of the things we loved most was the artwork throughout the hotel. There’s something really unique and uplifting about it—it adds so much character and charm. You can tell a lot of care has gone into choosing each piece, and it gives the whole place a creative, almost homely feel. It made simply walking around the hotel feel like part of the experience. What really made our stay, though, was the people. The staff were so friendly, kind, and attentive, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble. It’s that genuine warmth that makes all the difference and turns a lovely hotel into somewhere you can’t wait to return to. The location is also perfect—ideal for exploring London, whether that’s a riverside stroll, a bit of culture, or somewhere nice to eat. Yet despite being so central, it still feels like a peaceful little retreat. All in all, Bankside Hotel has such a special feel to it. It’s comfortable, welcoming, and full of personality. We left feeling relaxed, happy, and already talking about when we might come back—which says it all really."

"Beautiful, modern, artful hotel in a perfect location with super friendly staff. Great sleep, so quiet outside. And what a lovely way to start the day — with a walk across the Thames."
