PB hotel design editorial

Eleven Georgian townhouses on Albemarle Street, stitched together over nearly two centuries into a single property, give Brown's Hotel a structural identity unlike almost any other address in London. James Brown, Lord Byron's former butler, established the hotel in 1837, and its guest list since — Rudyard Kipling, Agatha Christie, Theodore Roosevelt, who held a press conference here after his wedding — has made it less a building than an institution. Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte's sister and the group's design director, led the most recent transformation, threading contemporary warmth through rooms that carry the weight of Victorian and Edwardian accumulation without surrendering to pastiche. The interiors move between registers with considerable confidence. Guest rooms divide between two sensibilities: one deeply English, with Cole & Son-style botanical wallpapers in forest green and gold, wide-plank oak floors, striped wingback chairs, and oil portraits in gilt frames; the other quieter and more contemporary, with dove-grey upholstered headboards, brass Stilnovo-influenced floor lamps, and blocked wool throws in tonal stripes. The Donovan Bar, named for Terence Donovan whose black-and-white fashion photographs line its grey panelled walls, carries a 1960s cocktail-lounge atmosphere, its illuminated brass back bar contrasting with preserved Victorian stained glass. Charlie's restaurant retains its original dark oak panelling, now animated by hand-painted tropical murals that run above the dado in vivid counterpoint to the room's Georgian bones.

"I had requested an early check in with the hope of getting into the room an hour or two early. We arrived at the hotel just before 10am to discover that not only was our room ready but had also been given a complementary upgrade. The hotel is beautiful inside and very intimate. Wonderful staff and excellent food. The Donovan Bar is pure class. Thank you all at Browns for a fantastic stay."

"Hands down the best 5-star hotel in London. We felt truly looked after by the incredibly adept staff. We had our cocker spaniel with us as usual, and I can confirm this is certainly the most dog-friendly hotel; well-behaved dogs can follow you to breakfast / lunch and are allowed with you in nearly all areas of the hotel. We recommend the A-La-Bark menu for fussy or easy eaters who are accustomed to clean, nutritious meals. If you're not a breakfast person, their fresh baked pastry trolley will soon change that! Take the crab omelette soufflé if you embrace breakfast like a king, the silky three-egg omelette if you're a no fuss breakfaster and don't forget the banana bread because it's gonna top the banana bread chart - either way, you'll find the highlight of any breakfast or dining service is the exceptional staff and service in itself. Wow. We had THE BEST EVER Sunday Lunch here and we don't say that lightly. Decadent 70% chocolate pudding comes on a trolley. Ladies, when visiting the Donovan Bar you have to try the Spicy Fifty. One morning, while my husband nipped out to bring the dog for a walk, a lovely porter inquired if he would like to bring coffee up for me, which he would gladly prepare. Incredibly distinct level of care for their guests. PS: If you've swooned over the marble bathrooms in photos, they are so much better in real life!"

"Top hotel in London. BEST bed in the world since our visit to the Marbella Club. A real five-star housekeeping team. Amazing breakfast at Charlie's where well-behaved dogs are allowed to follow you in for breakfast and lunch as well as in Donovan Bar. Exceptional location in Mayfair and practically on Piccadilly. No time to Burlington Arcade and Bond Street and literally under 5 minutes to Park Chinois, Fortnum & Mason, Bentley's Oyster Bar, The Wolseley, Franco's, dog parks, and it's just 10 minutes away or less by foot or car to our favourite dinner places including Carbone, The Maine, or Sexy Fish. The hotel feels like the perfect London home. Spotless, scented halls, intimate settings, fresh blooms greeting you everyday. Housekeeping velcro ties all your wires. LP is their house pour bubbly for normal fun occasions, and the best part is you have the best people looking out for you as you leave the doorway with a talent for conjuring up umbrellas and emergency espressos. Brilliant wi-fi, no fuss. Johnny the doorman made sure we were tucked into our taxi well and checked if we had all our belongings before bidding us a sad farewell. If you're a Negroni fan or critic, you're gonna love Donovan Bar's. My wife was ordering the Spicy Fifty consecutively - recommended it to a friend who visited us - and our friend wasn't willing to leave before she had 'another one' of it. If you love your food, you have to do their world class Sunday Roast at least once, but do it twice if you didn't order the chocolate dessert to finish or stay for Jazz Sunday evening. Matteo will entrance you with his wine pouring antics - all very natural but too interesting to be common. You'll then have to return for the candlelight dinner. Pianist in the next room. Basically everything great in world class hotels coming together in a perfectly executed service. Can't wait to be back again and again. My wife says the only thing unfair about this review is that we didn't mention the Irene Forte bathroom range. You'll just have to try it, otherwise you won't believe we don't normally take the time to write such lengthy reviews."
