PB hotel design editorial

Antonio Citterio's instinct for controlled opulence found perhaps its most precise expression on Knightsbridge's Bulgari Hotel London, which opened in 2012 across from Hyde Park in a purpose-built six-storey structure clad in pale Roman travertine. Working with his studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, he designed both the building and its 85 rooms and suites — an unusual degree of authorial control that keeps the facade and the interiors in an unusually consistent conversation. The exterior presents as a contemporary reinterpretation of a Mayfair mansion block: tall bronze-framed windows set into flush stone panels, shallow Juliet balconies, a canopied entrance in warm brass announcing arrival without theatre. Inside, Citterio's signature vocabulary — macassar ebony, dark-stained walnut floors, damask headboard panels in taupe and bronze, lacquered black bedside drums — runs through the rooms with the confidence of a jeweller's house collection rather than a hotel brief. The bar, visible in the images, leans into a different register: dusky pink banquettes and curved velvet club chairs arranged before a back-lit wall of spirits in a walnut frame, the atmosphere closer to a private members' club than a conventional hotel lounge. The restaurant deploys tan leather chairs, herringbone-laid dark oak floors, and a ceiling grid of linen drum pendants suspended on blackened steel armatures — all of it grounded enough to feel permanent, polished enough to confirm exactly whose address this is.

"Our top rated hotel on our UK vacation. We spent three nights here to start our UK vacation. For context, we also stayed at the Four Seasons (Hampshire), The Balmoral (Edinburgh), Cameron House (Loch Lomond), and The Shangri LA (The Shard). Location was perfect to see some of the iconic sites and shops. The Staff was outstanding and very engaging. Julia (reception), and TJ (Nolita Social), were two of the best. The food and drinks were always on point, and we have never had Tiramisu anywhere as good as we had there. Can not say enough good things about this hotel or the staff."

"I had recently a massage in the Bulgari Spa and I booked with a specialist Marzena Zawadzka. “One of the best massages I’ve had. The therapist listened carefully to the areas where I had tension and adjusted the pressure perfectly. The environment was calm, clean, and relaxing. I walked out feeling lighter, relaxed, and with much less neck and shoulder pain. I’ll definitely be coming back.” Marzena the specialist is Highly recommend!"

"Our stay at Bvlgari Hotel London was truly wonderful. The hotel is beautifully maintained, the location is excellent, and the service throughout the stay was outstanding. Traveling with two young children can sometimes be challenging, but the team made everything feel smooth and comfortable from the moment we arrived. A very special thank you to the concierge team, who went above and beyond during our stay, including personally helping us secure a reservation at Zuma. Their level of care and attention was exceptional. We would also like to especially recognize Julia at the front desk. She provided one of the warmest and most thoughtful welcomes we have ever received at any hotel. Her kindness and professionalism immediately made us feel at home. Additionally, the General Manager was incredibly kind with our children, which meant a lot to us as a family. We truly appreciated the thoughtful gifts and personalized touches dedicated both to our children and to us during our stay. Those details made the experience feel genuinely special and memorable. The room was very comfortable for our family, housekeeping was impeccable, and the atmosphere of the hotel feels calm, elegant, and welcoming at the same time. The spa and common areas are beautiful, and the overall experience felt polished yet very family-friendly. We would gladly stay again on our next visit to London."

"Just back from a stay at the Bvlgari London and have to give a special mention to Athar, who looked after me from the moment I arrived. He greeted me on arrival, took the time to show me around the hotel properly, and made sure I had everything I needed throughout the stay — checking in on me twice on the Saturday and even giving me a call on Sunday to see if there was anything else he could do. He also very kindly sorted out a late checkout for me, which made the end of the stay so much more relaxed. It's the sort of service that genuinely makes you want to come back. The hotel itself is beautiful, but people like Athar are what turn a nice stay into a memorable one. Thank you!"
