PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1885 as the Metropole Hotel and later requisitioned as the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence during both World Wars, the great Portland stone and terracotta wedge at the corner of Whitehall Place and Northumberland Avenue carries more of London's political history within its walls than almost any other hospitality address in the city. When Corinthia Hotel London opened here in 2011 following a meticulous restoration by Dexter Moren Associates, the challenge was to honour that accumulated gravity without embalming it — to make a Victorian palazzo feel genuinely alive rather than reverently preserved. The result across 294 rooms and suites holds that tension fairly well, with interior design by Goddard Littlefair deploying pale silks, dark-stained walnut joinery, and leather-upholstered headboards in a palette drawn from amber, taupe, and plum. The interiors visible in the images confirm the range of registers the designers were asked to sustain simultaneously. The Northall restaurant works the building's original curved volumes to considerable effect — cognac leather banquettes beneath soaring arched windows, antique-mirrored panels doubling the depth of the room, a coffered ceiling chandelier pulling warmth downward. The Bassoon bar reads as something altogether darker and more theatrical, its deep forest-green dome, oxblood Chesterfield seating, and a suspended metallic suit sculpture giving the space an eccentric, cabinet-of-curiosities energy that sits in pointed contrast to the gold-and-cream civility of the guest rooms above.

"What a treat to visit the most beautiful hotel in London. After the amazing Tracy Emin exhibition we met with my niece in the amazing Northall bar in the fabulous Corrinthia hotel. As always from the moment we stepped inside the warm welcome & the quiet luxury immediately made our evening complete. Best negroni to be had anywhere by a mile & impeccable manners from all the wonderful staff. Can’t wait to come back again Thank you"

"We had the most incredible Valentine’s Day experience, and it was seamless from start to finish. Our evening began at the Velvet bar, where we were made to feel so welcome right away. From there, we were escorted to the restaurant “Kerridge’s bar and grill” for a truly lovely meal—every dish was delightful and perfectly prepared. The steak was 👌 The highlight was the transition after dinner; we were invited back to the bar to enjoy live music. I felt very privileged. What started as a dinner turned into a full celebration that lasted until 1:00 AM! We had so much fun and truly didn't want the night to end. A huge thank you to the entire team at The Corinthia for such an unexpectedly lovely Valentine’s Day. We’ll definitely be back!"

"The Corinthia came highly recommended by a family member. This is a true 5 star hotel through and through. The bellmen greet you outside and take your luggage, while you go to their check in desk. They had families checking in off their private jets with stacks of customized trunks and the bellmen handle all of the luggage with care upon arrival. The reception has a fully stocked candy cart for the kids in that area. They outline the hotel and give you a tour on the way to your room. The rooms are perfectly appointed with ample space. We had a courtyard facing room, which really was a beautiful relaxing view. The accent lighting in the room added the extra ambiance. The beds were so incredibly comfortable with soft sheets. They do a turn down service with lavender sachets. They restock your rooms with water throughout the day. The bathroom is 5 stars with marble and double sinks (although one of ours was slow to drain), a full tub and a well appointed shower with a separate water closet. They provide slippers and robes for both adults and children. The carpets throughout the halls and rooms are very clean and in great condition. The scent throughout the hotel adds to the relaxing experience. Breakfast was outstanding. They put such care into each individual item. They put the berries and fruits in individual glasses and I can assure you each raspberry was without any imperfections and delicious. They had an array of tropical and standard fruits and berries, yogurt with all of the toppings, any bread or pastry you could want, and 3 fresh squeezed juices. We ordered a variety of egg dishes, which were all excellent. Service was 5 stars. We had drinks in Kerridge’s each night and the bar staff were friendly, remembered our preferences, and made kid friendly drinks as well. I highly recommend Kerridge’s for any occasion to sit and enjoy a drink with anyone. The spa is worth visiting. We had our children, and there are only 2 times a day for them to go in the pool. The pool was a beautiful stainless steel dark relaxing pool with cubbies to sit on the right. I can say I truly appreciate the spa staff for maintaining order down there. People were trying to sit on their phones and they came and told them that the spa is phone free and they needed to be put away. They also reprimanded some families who were trying to sneak their kids into the off limits areas. Kids must remain in the pool. Parents are welcome to use the sauna, cold plunge, and their hydro therapy pool. They have heated marble lounge chairs by the fireplace to relax in. I have absolutely nothing but high accolades. The Corinthia is a notch above some of the highest 5 star hotels and reports we have been to. We look forward to our next trip."

"The Corinthia exudes excellence without being stuffy. The staff are truly outstanding. Relaxed but not “in your face”. Fabulous facilities and the addition of Mezzogiorno Italian restaurant is a master stroke. Wonderful food in a gorgeous restaurant with great staff. So now, you don’t have to step foot out of the hotel to enjoy two great restaurants. Can’t wait to return. Thank you to everyone."
