PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1885 as the Metropole Hotel and later requisitioned as the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence during both World Wars, the great Portland stone and terracotta wedge at the corner of Whitehall Place and Northumberland Avenue carries more of London's political history within its walls than almost any other hospitality address in the city. When Corinthia Hotel London opened here in 2011 following a meticulous restoration by Dexter Moren Associates, the challenge was to honour that accumulated gravity without embalming it — to make a Victorian palazzo feel genuinely alive rather than reverently preserved. The result across 294 rooms and suites holds that tension fairly well, with interior design by Goddard Littlefair deploying pale silks, dark-stained walnut joinery, and leather-upholstered headboards in a palette drawn from amber, taupe, and plum. The interiors visible in the images confirm the range of registers the designers were asked to sustain simultaneously. The Northall restaurant works the building's original curved volumes to considerable effect — cognac leather banquettes beneath soaring arched windows, antique-mirrored panels doubling the depth of the room, a coffered ceiling chandelier pulling warmth downward. The Bassoon bar reads as something altogether darker and more theatrical, its deep forest-green dome, oxblood Chesterfield seating, and a suspended metallic suit sculpture giving the space an eccentric, cabinet-of-curiosities energy that sits in pointed contrast to the gold-and-cream civility of the guest rooms above.

"I had a birthday champagne afternoon tea at the Corinthia in the Crystal lounge on 18 July. The service provided by Jenny was spot on and she was attentive and friendly throughout the time that we were there. Providing top ups on tea, coffee and sandwiches."

"We had an amazing time at Corinthia afternoon tea! The service was fantastic, the food was excellent as it had a great selection of sandwiches. The desserts didn’t only look like art but tasted amazing the raspberry tart was my favourite. I would like to give a special thanks to Emilio as he made our visit special as it was my mum’s birthday."

"We recently visited Corinthia London for afternoon tea as a party of seven to celebrate a baby shower, and it was a truly wonderful experience from start to finish. The service was exceptional—warm, attentive, and made us all feel incredibly welcome. Every detail was beautifully thought out, from the elegant crockery to the stunning fresh flowers, creating such a lovely atmosphere. The food was fresh, beautifully presented, and every item looked as good as it tasted. A lovely touch was being able to order extra sandwiches of your favourite choice, which was very much appreciated. There was such a generous selection of cakes that we couldn’t possibly finish them all, so we were able to take the remaining cakes home to enjoy later. The afternoon tea was for our friend’s baby shower, and the team made her feel especially well looked after by presenting her with a beautiful special cake just for her. It was such a thoughtful gesture and made the celebration feel even more personal and memorable. Everyone in our group had a wonderful afternoon and left feeling thoroughly looked after. We were all so grateful for such a special experience and would highly recommend the Corinthia London for anyone looking for an unforgettable afternoon tea."
