PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a Soho courtyard that sat derelict for decades before Kit Kemp and Tim Kemp's Firmdale Hotels transformed it into one of London's most spirited addresses, Ham Yard Hotel opened in 2014 around a central square anchored by a monumental Tony Cragg bronze sculpture — its stacked, organic forms in dialogue with the surrounding contemporary building designed by Stiff + Trevillion. The 91-room, seven-floor property is entirely Kit Kemp's creative vision: an interior designer whose instinct runs toward collision rather than coordination, layering pattern against pattern with a confidence that should not work but consistently does. The rooms demonstrate the range of that approach — one deploys blush pink striped walls against an oversized headboard framed in moss green with chinoiserie fabric, lantern pendants and floral-printed bench upholstery adding further incident; another pairs a vivid red rose-print headboard against grey grasscloth walls, with boldly tiled picture frames and a dress-form used as sculpture. The Crosse Keys bar is the most exuberant space: zigzag murals in coral and magenta sweep across rendered walls, a spiraling amber glass column rises beside the curved dark-wood bar, and a crystal chandelier hangs without apology over a scrubbed farmhouse table. The Potting Shed lounge beneath trails bamboo through a canopy of multicoloured Moroccan-influenced pendants, Gothic plaster arches lining the walls like architectural found objects. Every room feels assembled by someone with genuinely catholic taste.

About

In the midst of Soho and moments from Mayfair, Ham Yard Hotel has an urban village feel. The hotel revolves around a tree-filled garden with a bronze sculpture centrepiece by Tony Cragg. Alongside the hotel's 91 individually designed bedrooms and suites are 24 apartments, 13 independent stores and a restaurant and bar with outdoor dining. There is a drawing room and library, Spa and Gym, theatre, private event rooms and a 1950's style bowling alley. The rooftop garden has sweeping views of the Soho skyline. Interiors are designed by Kit Kemp in her award-winning modern British style.

"Super racist profiling. I was about to check in I just gave myself some time in the rooftop then the sleazy doorman saw me and called security on me. When I saw him I explain to him I’m not sure if he understood he lied to me saying he’s going to close the rooftop. This doorman smile at me like he did a good action today. This unacceptable I didn’t do nothing wrong if me seating somewhere is disturbing “no one” as no one was even there. It’s beyond outrageous! I didn’t decide to check in the manager rush to say i book to the restaurant while it’s in fact some nights at the hotel"

"Just spent a lovely weekend at Ham Yard Hotel to celebrate a 60th birthday and felt truly looked after. The location is great, service exceptional all round and our room was gorgeous. The attention to detail was really noticeable and impressive. I expected great design bearing in mind the owners, but underestimated how much this would increase the pleasure of my stay."

"The breakfast was one of the best I've ever had at any hotel; I was particularly impressed by the quality of the fresh produce. We really appreciated how the staff responded to all our requests instantly and with a smile. The hotel bar is very lively in the evenings, and the fact that locals frequent it adds a real atmosphere. Few places offer luxury with such warmth and friendliness. We will definitely be back."

"My wife and me had a great experience staying 5 nights at Ham Yard hotel. The location is great, central but quiet. The room was well organised even though it was not very big. A coffee machine was brought into our room as requested. The decor throughout the hotel is stunning. Breakfast was great, high quality food and very attentive service. Aiman that attended us was specially nice and friendly. Apart from breakfast, the hotel restaurant has a great decoration and high quality dishes all day long. Overall highly recommended and we plan to visit again."
